...I AM YOUR DOOM...
"how goes the other stuff you have been working on?"
Painstaking...I don't think I realised just how intricate the conversion work I'd done on all the Terminators was until it came time to paint the buggers. Getting there, though...slowly...
EDIT: bloody hell...500 posts!

how did you manage a soulgrinder with out buy the spearhead there not released till the 17th going by GW website.
Pre-ordered it from someone on Ebay - saved £10 off the RRP and got it early
*looks smug*
And to show what I'm working on right now, here's the Possessed Terminator/Terminator Lord from a while back; he's finally getting painted up...
Trying to decide on the right base colour for the non-armoured areas at the moment...I'm currently working along the lines of using the Terminator colours for the armour, and something like the Plaguebearer colours for the rest. You can just see part of the Terminator painting production line over his shoulder![]()
you need to hurry up and finish all your conversions and get this army ready for TT
i've been drooling in anticipation for a completed army of nurgly awesome-ness
i demand that you finish by next saturday!!
For christ sake your really good at this but are you independently wealthy cause all this stuff had to be expensive.
"...are you independently wealthy"
Ohh, I wish I was. But if I was, you wouldn't see any of my posts beginning with posting from work as many of them do
I'm just thrifty...
Oh didn't see that posting from work title. Thrifty huh I wish I was
Heh - how else could I have afforded to build up my guitar collection?
![]()
bloody hell how many stratocaster's does one mortal need!!!!! lol and two twelve strings???? and a load of acoustics and a bass!!! you must be bloody rich!!! i only have two guitars!
Come on, there's only two Strats...and three acoustics (6-, 7- and 12-string), and three basses (4-string fretted and a matched fretted/fretless pair of 7-strings). Loads of different tunings and stuff, also on of 'em's half size and another one's a mandolin. Some of the electrics are 7-strings too, and one has 29 frets and another has 36 frets...18 Strats would be over the top, but I have 18 pretty different instruments there
And, remember, it took me over 15 years to put that collection together...I may well get a custom 8- or even 9-string electric made this year, though.
Aaaanyway, much as I love talking guitars, let's not drift too far off-topic. More Possessed and Plaguebearer pics tonight hopefully...
Here's how the paint job on Kothaar is looking so far:
It's turning out to be pretty interesting to paint - a mixture of drybrushing on the armour, and blending & inkwashes on the skin and Nurgly bits.
More when I have it![]()
that.... thing... is amazing!
I can see a definite improvement in your painting between your first terminator and this!
+ nice collection.. are those some headless basses I see there?
not a fan of them myself, but I know the guy who designed them..
"Huddle close to your Emperor if he makes you feel safe. He cannot save you, for only Chaos is eternal..."Relic yearbook
"...are those some headless basses I see there?"
Yup, it's a matched pair of 7-string basses custom-built for me by Haydn Williams Guitars of Cumbria ; he makes excellent guitars, I've also had a pair of 7-string guitars from him.
Back on-topic...looking at Kothaar in the cold light of early afternoon with a fresh pair of eyes, I'm pleased with how he's looking at this stage. Obviously a ways to go yet, but I think he's looking about right for the combination of terminator and Plaguebearer coours that I was aiming for. Thanks for the compliment; I actually do feel at the moment as though I'm improving a little with each thing I paint...which is a nice feeling![]()
I love it, when i first saw him i tought that you posted some artwork as a reference![]()

posting from work
I managed to get the guts painted and inked just before I left for work (picking up the Chaos Daemons codex + more paints on the way in, working in the building next door to Warhammer World has its benefits), and hopefully I'll be able to get a bunch more done on him tonight when I get back. I'm really looking forward to getting the metals done on him, not least to see how they offset the green plate armour and putrid Nurgly bits. Looking at him now, he's making me want to do more Nurgle Possessed...I'll almost certainly Nurgle up the Ogre/Spawn/Possessed one...
![]()
...and make him full-on Nurgle Possessed![]()
Here he is with two more stages of highlighting and guts painted and inked...just needs the armour finishing and final skin inkwashes then it'll be time for the metals.
![]()
Definitely encouraged by how he's coming on nowAnd oops, just realised I've completely forgotten to paint his hoof...duh...
EDIT: I have a question about Nurglings, if anyone knows - how many Nurglings should be put on each base? I may be being dumb, but I can't find an answer to this one. I've enjoyed doing the Plaguebearers - and am pleased with how they've come out - enough that now I want to get the tiny guys done as well![]()

He looked kinda better before, the guts are too bright and the big eye was cooler looking when it was all smudged up![]()
posting from work
The guts will get a final inkwashing to match the final shade of the rest of him, but I can't really do that till the rest of him's done. Though even so, the guts are no brighter than they are on the Plaguebearers![]()
The eye will be re-messed-up, but what was on him before was accidental messing-up from the basecoats of paint as opposed to the deliberate messing-up of it that I'll be doing at the end; I'm thinking yellowish cloudiness over a shiny black base...like a diseased marble. Or something.
Last edited by Svartmetall; 11th May 08 at 11:54 AM.
Before he looked like a part of his skin got torn up and stuck over his eye which looked very cool![]()
And now with skin, Nurgly bits, guts, claws and horns done; I'll get the hoof and armour done tonight after work and hopefully even get started on the metals.
![]()
I think the overall colour balance between the guts and the other organic bits of him is about right now, but as always all C+C welcomed. The diseased, rheumy-eye colouring will be the very last thing I do on him...
Here's how the colour scheme for him has progressed so far, stage by stage; thought it might be nice to see how he's developing:

I'll do a full paint-by-paint and ink-by-ink guide for this guy in the Nurgle 101 tutorial once he's completely finished...

Looking forwards to seeing that one in the flesh on wednesdayYour painting really is coming on in diseased leaps and bounds
And as for Nurglings - you put as many/few on the base as you feel looks right. 5 feels cramped, 2 looks too few if you ask me. But you could just do one, sitting on a big pile of excrement looking chuffed if you wanted.![]()

Svart... what can I say? Excellent
This is your strongest work by far, from a painting perspective. That model looks really really good. What really improves it over your Terminator (the competition one) for me is the variation in colour you have applied to the intestines. It really makes the model come alive, where the Termie wound up looking a little washed out.
The only area of the model that I think still suffers is in its right hand claw. Personally, I would paint the claw in a much more vivid colour to really differentiate it from the rest of the model.
I must say though, I'm really impressed with the model as a whole. Top work.

"Personally, I would paint the claw in a much more vivid colour to really differentiate it from the rest of the model."
Hmm; to my eyes it already stands out quite a bit, but I think especially once the metal bits of the armour are picked out it'll be very distinct from the rest of the model. Plus, it really needs to be about the colour it is to keep it visually and logically consistent with the other non-guts organic parts of the mini.
And thanks for the compliment.

Aaand here he is with metals and hoof done. Basing aside, he's pretty much complete now except for the weathering and rust...
...I'm really pleased with how he's looking now; to my eyes he's right in the middle between Terminator and Plaguebearer, which is where I'd always wanted my Possessed to be.
A full step-by-step painting guide will be in the tutorial thread shortly; as always, all C&C is welcomed.

I haven't had a criticism yet. I really like your Nurgle models and plan on adding your tutorials to the collection I keep in a binder by my painting table. If I get around to Nurgle again it will be the first place I turn.
Really brilliant stuff and a whole army of these is going to be wonderful (and horrible) to see.
That is one extremely badass Possessed. I've never really been a fan of Nurgle, but all the models you have here are absolutely stunning!
I thought this guy was supposed to be a lord?
"For thousands of years we've waited in the dark, but now is the time to awaken and take what is rightfully ours" Unknown Phaeron transcript intercepted by Inquisitor Gabriel Khain
"I thought this guy was supposed to be a lord?"
Well, he started off purely as a Possessed I was making for the hell of it out of recycled Terminator bits, but I liked the way he turned out enough - even before he was painted - that I figured he'd make a good stand-in Lord while (in theory) I worked on the proper model for Lord Kothaar the Putrescent.
However, looking at how he's turned out now that he's painted, this guy might just end up being a permanent Nurgle Terminator Lord anyway (although he's still a Possessed, strictly speaking)
While I remember, here's the next bit of the stage-by-stage photos:
"I really like your Nurgle models and plan on adding your tutorials to the collection I keep in a binder by my painting table. If I get around to Nurgle again it will be the first place I turn."
Woah, thanks; coming from a painter as accomplished as yourself that's a real compliment. Considering that this guy will be only my second completed model, I'm really pleased with how he's looking; it's a real confidence-booster for my painting & converting as a whole, quite apart from the satisfaction with the model itself.
Looking forward to getting some in-the-flesh feedback on it from SilverTabby tonight![]()
"this guy might just end up being a permanent Nurgle Terminator Lord anyway"
If so, what would he be equipped with?
They'd count as a pair of lightning claws; I made sure there was visible power cabling going into the claws on both arms for that very reason.
Damn he looks impressive, its nice to see some paint on him as you can see the amount of work you put into the model. The conversion work you have put into the model is awe inspiring Svart 10/10 for this mini. I'd love to see your completed force fielded on the battle field, all shambling along.
Makes me proud to see other nurgle projects coming along so beautifully - in a nurgle way of course.
Do I ever feel too old to play 40K?.......Nah.
Growing old is inevitable.
Growing up is optional
Aessar - "Threads, unlike Necrons, aren't supposed to rise from their graves."

These guys are ugly, just to ugly.
And that's kind of a good thing to say about plague marines... Right?
I'll rip of your skin.
Get on your nerves.
"...that's kind of a good thing to say about plague marines... Right?"
Ohhh yes.
Thats on ugly son of a Beast (of nurgle...)
good work its a brilliant piece of work - quick quick - get it finished
ever though of scratch building a great unclean one for the force? with your skills i can imagine it would come out brilliantly.
"Ever though of scratch building a great unclean one...?"
I've actually got a GUO waiting in a box somewhere to be assembled and painted up, just haven't found the time yet to do him. The Forge World GUO is really nice; but it's not £95 nice, and I like the regular model anyway. Plus, scratch-building a GUO would use up like a kilo of green stuffI suspect the closest I'm going to need to come to a bona fide scratch-build at the moment will be Foulspawn, whenever I get round to starting work on him. There isn't really anything that's close enough to how I'm visualising him that I'd be able to use it as a basis to convert from, so I think he'll end up being my first proper scratch-building effort.
In between finishing off the Terminator squad's paintjobs and working on the Spawn for the new competition, I'm going to try using an Ogre as the basis for converting a big Plaguebearer based on the one from the Codex page on them. I think it's funny that the Codex goes on about their wasted bony limbs, and on the same page has a picture of this hulking great Sumo Plaguebearer Of DoomI think some Plaguebearers would be bloated and fat, though - with a myriad diseases each with different symptoms, it seems reasonable to me that at least some Plaguebearers would end up bloating rather than wasting away. I'm looking forward to making that big jagged Plaguesword of his...
that possesed nurgle terminator lord thing makes me want to puke ( which is a good thing for a nurgle :P )

hmmm doesn't his eye need something like a pupil or iris?
posting from work
"...doesn't his eye need something like a pupil or iris?"
Indeed, but that and the mouth will be the very last things to get done, as I want them to match everything else properly. The current plan is to have the eye like a black marble with yellow veining running through it; given how mutated and diseased his body is, I think I can get away with a distinctly non-normal-looking eye.
Last edited by Svartmetall; 15th May 08 at 5:22 PM.
I personally feel that either a white or red pupil will do the trick
The sight of that makes me want to vomit its so full of pestilence and filth. In other words, I adore it. You have a unique style of painting. Your choice of colours are a bit more realistic and the combination of matte armour and glossy organs come together perfectly. Your painting has greatly improved since youve begun.
posting from work
"You have a unique style of painting..."
Er...I do? I'm just winging it, really.
"Your choice of colours are a bit more realistic"
Ahh, now that's definitely deliberate; I'm a very firm believer in the theory that fantasy works best if it's presented as realistically/believably as possible. Hence the amount of time I spend working out what colour something would actually be in real life before I paint it; I generally let realism dictate colours wherever it's feasible or whenever I'm in doubt, hence (for example) the hoof on Kothaar's right leg, it's just real-world hoof colour.
And thanks for the complimentI'm actually feeling myself improve as I go at the moment, which is a hell of a nice feeling.
Right, I've just updated the Nurgle 101 tutorial with a guide to painting the Plague Possessed...now it's time to grab a nice cold beer before heading back to green-stuffing the Spawn for the competition...

Brief update - here's the second of my three Spawn for the painting competition, this one's a full-on Nurglespawn. I think the GS work is now finished on him, though I'm going to take another look at him tonight when I get back to make sure; he may need a few more buboes'n'pustules and a bit more stretched tissue...

The mass of tentacles that his back's turning into is a nod to the classic Beast Of Nurgle model (which I always thought looked like the Beast Of Aaargh from 'Monty Python And The Holy Grail'). I love the way his left ear's melted halfway down his face while a round-ish patch of skin on his chest next to it is trying to turn into another ear...yay for Chaotic mutation...I also had fun making the mouth with the hardened drool building up underneath, plus I'm really happy with the way the old Chaotic Mutation sprue tentacle-arm-thing blends into the Spawn torso
-----
OK, now I'm going to be away for a few days as it's time for the first big live roleplay event of the year - I'll be spending my days running around in 60 pounds of chainmail with a large axe (see my Yearbook for a pic) and my nights with a guitar and a beer.
Stay out of trouble, you crazy kids

Well, after 1,000,000 years...an update! Here's where I am with the Spawn now, they're constructionally finished and basecoated and I'm encouraged by how they're starting to look; I think they'll definitely stand out from the usual by-the-numbers Spawn you tend to see.
Group shot:
Spiny:
...I was fairly iffy about this guy when I entered him for the competition, but now I'm really starting to like how he looks. All those spines are going to be a bugger to paint, though...
Nurglespawn:
...he's meant to be a veteran Plague Marine who got wounded one time too many, and Grandfather Nurgle's healing finally sent him over the edge into Spawndom; he still has (broken & deformed) parts of his power armour clinging to him.
And Rhino:
...pleased with his charging posture and the way the textures match up via very careful greenstuffing. I added several bits to the central horn-cluster Spawn part, and they look decently homogenous now.
I have particular colour schemes planned for these guys, mainly based on various real-world animals...since I have a set time-limit on getting these guys done for the competition, they'll probably be the focus of my painting for the time being. I'm taking stage-by-stage pictures as I go, so I may well rustle up a guide to how they got painted up for a Spawn tutorial.
More, as they say, when we have it![]()

Been a real pleasure following this thread svartmetall, the whole army looks awesome.
Love the idea of the spawn vet plague marine, it's the sort of thing that adds great character to an army ( I don't think he even knows :-)
You mentioned you would need loads of green stuff for a model..you could always use milliput as the main filler/builder.
Also......any up date on the WOLFENSPAWN ?
Wolfie's somewhat on hold while I work on getting the 3 for the competition as good as I can get them painting-wise, but I haven't forgotten about him. He'll be the next Spawn I do , which will then give me two squads of three apiece - the competiton trio of Spiny, Rhino and Vet along with the original three of Fly, Lefty and Wolfie.
Pet names make Spawn cute![]()
