    What am I doing wrong?

I got CoH about a month ago and have been playing it all the time. I got familar with all the parts to the game, but for some reason I just suck. I mean I can't get a defense going against a hard, I just suck. My strategy is build like 3 or 4 engineer groups and go capture points then have on group sit back and wait to build base structures. I will build weapons support before barracks, I really don't like barracks for some reason, and make a couple of machine gun teams. I try and put OP on the good points to keep them going longer so I will have some resources. I try and build AT's and throw machine gun nests as defenses around my base and then will venture out when I have a good light armor group going. I just don't get the strategy to this game I guess.

Your problem is you are not going out and engaging the enemy, you are not going out and pushing for more land. You seem to be playing like someone would do in CnC3, mass a bunch of vehicles or tanks. That does not work effectively in this game, against any opponent you are going to be constantly under attack, you should be out there fighting not sitting in your base.
All sides are only as Overpowered as you let them.

Go with 2 engineers only, get riflemen and contest for map control. You cant camp in your base with MG nests and go for armor.

"You seem to be playing like someone would do in CnC3, mass a bunch of vehicles or tanks. "

Disagreed. Massing is the only way to break out of entrapment and it usually works. Massing tanks is the best way to use them inho

Did you read what he wrote? He put in very simple terms that he goes out, caps land, and then sits in his base building up a mass. Exactly like a CNC player would. Hes not trapped he is purposely sitting in his base.

As for massing tanks is best way to use them I have to say: Do you ever launch multiple attacks or just single blob attacks?

Splitting up your armor and your infantry to launch multiple pronged assaults from many directions is a good way to split your enemy apart and encircle them to crush them and pretty much have the majority of the map secured. Tactical map is good for this.

Just one big blob of tanks and infantry is just asking to be hit with artillery or meet another gigantic blob that just leads to both sides having to fall back having gained nothing.

Don't be scared to use the retreat button. By that I mean go out and start fights early, if it goes wrong retreat the unit - repair it and get it back up there.

As said earlier you need to compete early for resources - I'm afraid that with the resource point model, all the time you are behind in resource points, you are losing ground, finally to the point were you cannot compete.

SO get out there and even of you cannot capture certain points, contest them, make your opponent pay for his resources. BY the way only by doing this can you get to tech up the trees.

If you sit on your base your not going to have any resources to get tanks or light armour after your opponent caps everything else.

Think about the map and your opponent, hmgs from the weapons support can set up ambush points or hold some ground for you, snipers can scout and harass, and if you go barracks keep riflemen running around to harass and capture points. If you keep them fighting and retreat when down a few men they'll build up vet status.

It's just a jump up from the campaign, you have to aggressive straight away, even with the Brits. Watch some replays for ideas!

thanx guys, I used the new tech. of relentless attacks and played a 2v2 with norm cpus and won but they stormed my base when I had my blob attack going on and almost lost my base before I destroyed theirs. gonna have to make a good at mgn base defense before i go and take out their base.

This game is all about territory control.

At the beginning of the game, if you have a choice between capturing neutral territory or his territory, go for his.

It's not so much about you gaining resources as it is you DENYING him resources.

Be familiar with what the enemy needs. If you are playing against Axis and don't want to be mauled by tanks, then controlling the fuel points is absolutely critical. Again, it's not that YOU need the fuel, it's that you are DENYING the fuel to the enemy.

Ok. For good advice got www.gamefire.com and watch the Tales of Heroes replay reviews. Those transformed me from a total noob who couldn't beat the normal AI to a fairly (I emphasise fairly) good player.

Make sure you also play the campaigns. A lot of people dont emphasize this enough. It acts like a very long tutorial, but it will help familiarize you with different infantry and support and what roles they play. It will teach you a little about chokepoints, setting up defenses and will force you to cap land (uncontested at first) which will help you realize that having more territories means having more forces. With that comes an expense though since you will need to defend those territories. And that is where the strategy comes into play. Some territories are more important than others and your forces should be taking and defending them more heavily. After the campaigns, go to the forums, TOH and read and watch about different strategies you can implement to make you a more challenging online player. Youll start to notice that the AI tends to force you to play most tiers of teching which is more often than not the case with online play due to its massive resource influx. It takes awhile to learn, but it makes the game a lot of fun once you get it down pat.

that's a great feat. nice work.

try to play online 1v1 automatches. since you're *probably* still level 1, you should be matched with players around your skill level. hopefully you won't have the misfortune of meeting a pe player.

that's how i got better. i just kept playing online over and over again. sure i lost some 80 - 100 games, but luckily about 3 months after i got the game there was a stats wipe. i was beginning to win games, but i was still sporting a 3:7 win ratio. the stats wipe helped and since then i've had positive win percentages.

I believe the best way to get better is play a really good player in 1v1 that just whoops your ass. Save the replay. And learn. It works very well.

The huge patch will let you play with or against the Opposing Fronts factions, Panzer Elite (PE) and British. Panzer Elite are very popular with Axis players right now, they have a lot of cheap strats and just might be overpowered.

Don't spend 280mp on 2 extra engineer squads, that mp is worth a rifle squad, use it. Rifles can own vanilla volks and panzer grenadiers UP CLOSE. If you see a vanilla squad, just move your Rifles directly into the squad, those M1's does a very good job at killing up close.

Watch replays and stop playing the computer. It's bad. Really bad. Even the expert. It spams engineers, jeeps, and useless units. It doesn't know how to counter you. I guess it's just a question of getting the game, or not. Oh and BTW, the computer does not defend its base. So if you just load up a halftrack full of shrecks, as soon as you can, no matter what the map situation is, and drive them to his base and have at it, you win.

Ok, so here is a question for you to determine whether you're getting it. If you play on Angoville against the computer, you cap one side as far as the fuel probably. Do you then
    a) attack the computer's strat point on the other side to cut off his resources
    or
    b) Op some fuel, set up defenses on your territory, and try to tech up to build up your humongous armored force that will own everything.

If you answered b, you're not playing the game right. And you will lose consistently in online play until you adopt the fast aggressive style of 1v1 and 2v2 combat.

Remember that if you and your opponent have the same resource income, he is teching as fast as you. He will have a counter for whatever you field, or soon after. How, then, do you win the game? By stopping his ability to tech. So in COH, aggressive denial of resources comes second to teching, or even getting them for yourself. Thus the infantry based nature of 1v1 and 2v2. No one dares tech too fast, because they will lose map control, and thus resources, and finally the game.

You might want to get OF and play Brits, they made Brits for people like you. But since British infantry is so much more powerful than any other factions' tier 1 infantry, the best way to win with British is to do the same thing. Push as far forward as you can, as fast as you can, entrench, build some emplacements, and wait for them to counterattack. Rinse, repeat.
