M02 - Angel Moon
Send atleast 2-3 bomber squads to the carrier right away and try and take out the fighter modual
Be sure to Send all your Interceptor Squadrons to help Bishop 1 and everything on that side first. Target the Bombers First and foremost.
In this level you will face an enemy carrier with a fighter construction bay in the center of the map, with 2 groups of 3 transports coming in from the left and right sides of the carrier. The transports are labeled as Bishop 1 - 6, with Bishop One being the closest ship on the right, and Bishop Four the closest on the left.
YOU MUST SAVE FOUR (4) TRANSPORTS TO FINISH THE MISSION
At the start of the mission Bishop One and Two will be under attack from two seperate strike groups with a mix of assault craft and bombers.
The fleet you start the level with doesnt make much of a difference to the Vaygr threat in this level. Hopefully you did, however, build more than the one interceptor group required by the last level.
Having 2 wings of about 4 or 5 interceptor squadrons and a wing of 2 or 3 bomber squadrons are the key to saving all 6 transports. With the resources you have available, a single group will not be able to save one of the transports.
When you hyper in, get out 2 resource collectors to compliment the one you brought with you from Tanis (if you were smart you built more than 1 collector at Tanis). Move the Mothership closer to the asteroid patch to increase the effeciency of your resource gathering op (the collectors will have less distance to travel).
Send your interceptors to Bishop One.
As soon as you have enough RUs, start pumping more interceptor wings. Reinforce your existing compliment until you have 4 or 5 of them, and then start sending more off to the group of transports on the left. Your interceptor group should be clearing the fighters from around Bishop Two by the time you start splitting your forces.
After you have cleared the fighters and bombers from Bishop One and Two, the carrier will start launching reinforcements. These are generally 2 groups of assault craft and bombers to the left group of transports, and 1 group to Bishop Three on the right. Send your bombers to destroy the carrier's fighter subsystem.
Hopefully your interceptor group will be waiting for them on the left.
Once you have destroyed one of the fighter groups attacking the transports on the left, a few Vaygr frigates will hyper in and begin attacking Bishop Four. Move your fighter group away from this new threat and towards Bishop Six, where a new strike group is launching an attack.
Do not worry about the Vaygr frigates, as Captain Soban will hyper in with his fleet and destroy them.
Meanwhile, your interceptors should have cleared the fighters around Bishop Three. Move them back across the map to assist the other group with clearing the remaining fighters.
By now the carriers fighter bay should be gone and your bombers will be firing at will on the carrier. Move them back and dock them, you no longer need them.
From here on in everything happens by itself. The Vaygr frigates are destroyed, and Captain Soban will pursue the Vaygr carrier as it attempts to escape to its exit point. It will never get there, since the combined damage of your bombers and his frigate will ensure its destroyed.
You should have saved four transports by now. If you do manage to save the fifth and sixth transport, your fleet will be boosted by 3 wings of Elite bombers and 2 wings of Elite gunships (regular not pulsar). The arrival of Bishop 5 will give you the bombers, and Bishop 6 will give you the gunships. These ships have slightly more speed and armour than the regular units.
Resources collected, Mission successful.
be sure that bishop six docks before you have completely destroyed the carrier, because if you kill the carrier before the last transport docks you will not receive 2 squads of elite gunships.
That is not correct. I have actually never docked all the transports before I destroy the carrier, and the mission ends some seconds after the last transport has docked.
What I do is send my bomber squads (I usually make sure to have built 4 of them in mission 1) almost up to the carrier at the beginning. Do not send them all the way there, as the next group of enemy fighters will launch prematurely if the carrier is attacked.
When your interceptors have killed the bombers around bishop 1 and 2 (the assault craft don't count as a threat against the transports for some reason) have your bombers destroy the fighter facility. While they are doing that, send your interceptors to clear out the fighters around bishop 3.
When the bombers have destroyed the fighter facility, send them against the bombers around bishop 4 (or is it bishop 5 that gets attacked by frigates?). It is not really necessary, but this way you can ensure that the entire Soban fleet survives by having them there and attacking the frigates as soon as possible. When the frigates are destroyed, concentrate all your fighter craft on eliminating the fighter threat to the transports. The Soban fleet will eliminate the carrier well before it gets near the exit point.
Taking into account the resources you have available on this mission, here are my recommendations on what you fleet should consist of by the end of the mission:
4 interceptor squads
4 bomber squads (plus the two elite bomber squads)
2 elite gunship squads (and maybe build some pulsar corvettes, resources allowing, in preparation for the next mission)
4 resource collectors (anything less than 4 collects resources too slow IMO)
Actually it is best to initially use your Interceptors against the enemy Assault Craft. I have had them (several times in the Demo) blow away several interceptor squadrons without realizing it until it's too late.
If you focus your initial attacks against the Assault craft each time, you achieve local fighter superiority and then can take out the enemy bombers with little fear of retaliation.
5 intys and 3 bombers doesn't work. I tried that and I could not destroy the fighter facility fast enough before another wave of ships launched. My usual strat of 4 and 4 works great though. :lion:
*DO NOT* go straight for the Fighter Facility if you aren't ready! Attacking the Carrier automatically triggers a second wave of Bombers/Assault Craft on the transports, and it's generally a good idea to wipe out the first wave before progressing. In fact, it's even better if you destroy all but one or two bombers harassing Bishop 1/2 and then reposition your Interceptors where they can immediately engage the second wave.
Really there's nothing to worry about in this mission, the transports are very tough and the Ferin Sha Fleet wipes out the Vaygr frigates very quickly. As long as you don't screw around for too long, every transport will be saved with great bonuses.
By the time you leave this mission you should have 5-6 Interceptor squadrons, 2-3 Bomber squadrons + 2 Elite Bomber wings, 2 Gunship squadrons + 2 Elite Gunship wings, and 2-3 Resource Collectors.
I usually go into this mission with 5 inties, 3 bombers, and an RC. The inties are groups 1 (2 squads) and 2 (3 squads), with the bombers set on group 3.
Build queue at mission start is 1 RC, 1 inty, 1 RC.
I send group 2 to Bishop 2 and group 1 to Bishop 1. Reasoning is that B2 has a mix of assault craft and bombers, so the extra inty squad helps there. B1 has only bombers, so group 1 can handle them no problem. Keep your bombers at the MS for now, since sending them to the carrier triggers the launch of reinforcements. Leave one or two bombers alive at B2 - killing them all is another trigger for reinforcements.
Meanwhile, move the Pride forward about 5000 meters and slightly to the left. This ensures that B6 will dock early enough to allow you to get the elite gunships.
By now, the inties under construction should be finished. Add them to group 1 and send them to B4. At the same time, send your bombers to take out the fighter facility on the carrier and have group 2 move towards the carrier for fighter cover and to take out the reinforcements heading to B3. When the bombers are done with the fighter facility, either send them back to the MS to repair, or, if there are no Vaygr fighters nearby, go ahead and take out the carrier's engines. Then dock 'em and leave 'em at the MS.
As soon as group 2 is done with everything heading to B3, send them over to B6. The Vaygr frigates should be showing up about now, so if group 1 is done at B4, move them to B6. During all this, the corvette facility should have been unlocked and built, and you should have a couple squads of gunships ready to send to B4/B5. Soban's fleet will take care of the Vaygr frigates, then move on to the carrier.
Pulsar 'vettes should also be researched and a couple squads built before the mission ends as well.
If everything goes right, B6 should dock with the Pride long enough before the carrier is destroyed for you to build up for the next mission. I've left mission 2 with 6 inties, 4 bombers, 2 elite bombers, 2 gunships, 2 elite gunships, 2 - 4 pulsars, 4 - 5 RC's, and two mobile refineries.
In this mission, you pretty much want to obey fleet command. Get yourself 4 Interceptor Squads and 3 Bomber Squads. Send the Interceptors and Bombers after the fighters attacking Bishop1. Once thats done, move on to Bishop2. When they have been cleared, you will be told to have bombers attack the fighter facility on the carrier. Do not do this before, or the mission will be harder [you'll have groups attacking Bishop3 and 4 before 1 and 2 are clear]. At this point have your bombers attack the fighter facility and your fighters defend bishop3.
Once the fighter facility is destroyed reinforcements will stop, and you'll quickly clear bishop3. Bishop4 will then be your priority. Your bombers should keep harassing the Carrier.
Depending on how fast you were, enemy frigates will either attack Bishop4 or Bishop5. Ignore them, as reinforcements will take care of them. Use your interceptors only against fighters and leave the bombers attacking the carrier. Once Bishop4 is clear, take on Bishop 5, then Bishop6.
Do things out of order and it can get a LOT harder, to the point where you could need 6 Interceptor Squads AND 2 gunship squads to save them all. Additionally attacking the carrier too early can trigger some fighters attacking your bombers, so just dont do it (:
Beat this one on the first try. I had something like 4 squads each of interceptors and bombers going in--and the first thing I did was send the int's AND the bombers to defend the first transport on the right. The bombers did pretty well against the Vaygr corvettes, and once those were gone the bombers were even able to get in a hit on fighters now and then.
A couple of times I split my forces, sending half my strike craft to defend one Bishop and half to defend another. After all, two Bishops at 40% health is a vast improvement over one undamaged and one at -20%.....
The only mistake I made was with the first Bishop coming from the left--I killed off most of the ships attacking that one, then went to defend the Bishop behind it, because that one had a whole pile of Vaygr ships on it. Midway through defending that one, I noticed that the two or three Vaygr bombers plinking away at the FIRST Bishop had almost killed it! My interceptors BARELY saved it.
6 Bishops docked safely. :yippee:
Edit: I stopped bragging pretty quick. Mission 3 was a lot harder, and mission 4 just dumped 20 frigates on me halfway through. OW!!! This game is BRUTAL!
Having all six Bishop transports docked:
Do not bother moving the mothership or showing mercy to Vaygr carrier. To have all six transports docked:
1. Destroy Vaygr Carrier before mothership meets minimum crew requirement (that is, 4 of transports docked).
2. Install Homeworld 2 Patch 1.1, which will change this mission so that all six transports will always dock with mothership.
How/When to attack the Vaygr Carrier
Attack it neither too soon nor late. Attacking it soon means early Vaygr reinforcement and early trouble. Attacking it late means chances are that you can't destroy it soon enough. Send your bombers close to carrier but not so close that it feels danger and launch strikecrafts. Anyway, make sure your bombers engage the Carrier when the Most of the Vaygr strikecrafts have received their orders. Destroy Carrier's fighter facility, then the Carrier itself.
