PAYDIRT! I just found a ridiculously easy--and actually sensible--way to beat this one. If you do it right, it's easier than it looks.
The key was my previous attempt. That time, I took a while to really get going, building up my forces and trying to get some research done. Then, when I sent a probe to the center resource patch, I noticed that it had already been eaten up--and the probe barely caught a glimpse of TWENTY Vaygr collectors leaving the scene. Their vector was in the general direction of the next resource patch on the left, so I sent my bombers over there to ambush them. Halfway through a hearty lunch of collectors, my bombers got jumped by the Frigate Swarm. OW!!!
The key discovery in that attempt was that the Vaygr are collecting RU's and building their fleet, just as you are. Incredibly obvious in hindsight, but it sure took me a while (and an ass-kicking) to remember this.
Next try: I went strong offense right out of the gates. I sent my bombers IMMEDIATELY to destroy the left-most inhibitor, using fighters to attack incoming Vaygr squads, and using my vettes to protect my resourcing ops. Destroyed the left inhibitor, pounced on a carrier and the hyper gate, then moved to the center inhibitor and destroyed that, bagged a 2nd carrier, and then went straight to the third inhibitor and dusted that.
Hyperspace jump follows.
The "Frigate Swarm" waiting for me at the station consists of a paltry four Assault Frigates and five missile frigates, with only missile vettes for cover. Behind them is the shipyard and a laughably small number of collectors. I put my bombers on the collectors; had my gunships (7 standard and 5 pulsar) kill off most of the vettes, then had the gunships attack the assault frigates. The shipyard built one Assault Frigate in the middle of this, and it died to my bombers immediately. Losses were a lot heavier than they should have been, because I didn't micromanage my gunships--but the gunships chomped on the assault frigates, and once those were destroyed my bombers chomped the missile frigates easily.
I suppose it's possible that I met such a small Frigate Swarm because half the Swarm was elsewhere on the map. But then, defeat in detail is how you beat superior numbers.
The solution is to either hyperjump early, or send strike craft early, desroy their resource ops early, and prevent them from building the Frigate Swarm.
Edit: If you suffer that "bug" where you destroy all the inhibitors but the hyperspace jump doesn't happen, pan the camera around each inhibitor asteroid--and check the back. My first attempt, I missed an inhibitor that way.![]()

Intelligence on Enemy Forces:
1. Enemy forces in this mission are calculated based on yours.
2. There is a heavy Vaygr - ship production - activity in this region. Vaygr already knows of your presence and is preparing to attack, so don't be fooled by music! The more you wait the stronger the Vaygr becomes.
3. There are three major activity point in this mission.
4. Vaygr forward operation is near the asteroids the three asteroids. Near each asteriod there are 4 hyperspace inhibitors and a hyperspace gate. Two Carriers are patrolling the asteroids and building ships. A handful of Vaygr strikecrafts and capital ships are stationed.
5. Vaygr support outpost is located near the resources straight in front of the left asteroid. It consists of three carriers, a destroyer, a heavy resource gathering operation and a handful of frigates. This outpost produces ships and sends them against you in small taskforces.
6. Vaygr command station is escorted by a Shipyard, a Carrier and a resource gathering operation, which will deplete local resources soon. The Command Station is massing up a large fleet. They will come your way after some times, but they're sure to come in numbers.
7. Whatever strategy you are suggested until now, DO NOT forget that time is against you. Enemy strength grows as the time passes.
8. The smaller fleet you possess when you finish this mission, the better. Enemy forces in the next mission will be calculated based on yours, with the difference that time will be on your favor.
ehhh, I'd like to bump this if possible. I spent a friggen TON of time on this mission. Not necessarially because it's difficult, but because I wanted to do it right. And in the end I find it to be one of my favorites.
(pre-patch)
I've read through this entire thread and have came to the conclusion that there are two main ways to complete this. The first is to go ont he total offensive and take out everything as fast as you can, preventing the frigate hoard from being built.
The second way is more conservative, and will end up being MUCH longer, but works equally the same. You sit back and deal with whatever comes to you. I find that to be more fun personally.
I really suggest capturing the destroyer. It's not hard to do but it'll make the rest of this mission easy as well as the next mission. The thing is you can't capture it if you make the tactical jump to the station at the end of the map. This means you can either wait around and catch it at your leisure, or you can send some marine frigates and a few fighters over and take it while you're dealing with the station.
The short method involves taking all bombers you have available and destroying the two carriers near to you, then take the bombers along with some platforms over to the enemy station and prevent the build-up of the frigate hoard. You can place the platforms just outside of sensors range of the station/shipyard, then let the frigates move into them as they will (use the fighters for bait). Destroy the shipyard and the carrier, then sit back and do whatever you want for a while.
If you wait around for the frigate hoard to come at you, I'd definitely suggest the minelayer approach. Get a couple milelayers and place a nice 3d minefield a little ways off from the mothership. When the frigate hoard gets near, send some fighters to harass them, and the mines will come and yank them apart. If your forces get destroyed hopefully the mines did enough damage to weaken the hoard. Have some workers repair the mothership as you produce more platforms against the remaining frigates.
As a note, I believe you won't make the tactical jump if there are any enemy ships in the vicinity (say, visible view of your ships back there). So, if the frigates move in on you close enough then you won't be able to jump out of there quickly unless you time it realllllly good (leaving only one inhibitor remaining, then smalshing it and retreating while the frigates are still a little ways away).
Anyways, those are my thoughts....have fun with it (even without the patch).
As newbie to HW series I was lucky - I beated this mission with first attempt. In third mission I saw that enemy forces also is harvesting resources. So in 4th mission I took all my 8 bomb squadrons, send them directly to the middle of asteroids. There was 2 capital ships which was destroyed by my bombers. I sent all rest forces to support them. As fast as those two capital ships were destroyed I sent my bombers further to the left - to the location of resources. (NOTE: I didn't destroy those little things on asteroids. I did that objective at the end, when all enemy forces was destroyed.) There were 3 capital ships, some resource collectors and the Destroyer. I destroyed only capital ships and resource collectors. While killing resource collectors my bombers squadron was almost destroyed. But I focused only on capital ships and on resource collectors. After destroying those resource collectors I docked my bombers and made more of those. Also while bombing out all resource collectors I built more 6 bomber squadrons, 2 Marine frigates and 4 torpedo frigates. Marine frigates I sent to capture one gateway and the Destroyer. One of those frigates I lost while capturing. As soon as my bombers squadron was repaired and reinforced - I sent them and Torpedo frigates and 3 squadrons of interceptors to support bombers to farest resource location in the middle. There were some resource collectors and some fighters squadrons. Killed those... Then I continued my bombers journey to the enemy base ship (I don't remember it's name). There was NOTHING exept base ship. It was defenseless. After destroying it new objective appeared - to destroy rest of enemy forces at location a little bit to the left of enemy base ship. There were shipyard and one capital ship. Also alone... While bombers took care of capital ship, torpedo frigates with Destroyer neutralized shipyard. After that I sent 3 bombers squadrons which was at base to destroy thos little things on asteroids.
Mission complete. I felt it was easy. Just do it all quite fast. Do not wait.
after trying everything on the first page, although it was working i always ran out of time
6int 8bomb 12 pulsar 4marine build what you dont have at beginning of mission while heading to left most disruptor
once there gank everything and capture the gate (should be easy)
send in fighters as a distraction then one second after they are gone send in everything else, have bombers kill the carriers while captring the destroyer.
captr the leftmost gate, jump back your ints and corvs and have them kill the other inhibitors asap or the carriers will make more units
while thats happening make a strike group with the destroyer and bombers.
once there have the bombers take out the carrier and shipyard ignoring subsystems
by then the destroyer will have the statio destroyed
so it seems if you do this as fast as possible the enem wont have time to build the fleet of frigs that normaly gaurds the station
note: i found destroyers were the only thing that can kill the station...since units want to aim at its center and not the walls its so big they cant get it range effectively![]()
it seems that as of patch 1.1 you no longer can capture anything (destroyers, carriers, bcs, maybe frigs...havent tried capturing frigs) in the campaign. capturing seems to only disable these units which is quite a shame because I REMEMBER capturing vagyr destroyers and being quite proud of them![]()
as far as I know you have never been able to capture carriers or shipyards. However I distinctly remember capturing destroyers post 1.1 Dunno about BCs as I never get that far (always too busy re-watching the NIS so i know exactly what Karan and fleet Intel say for my fan-fiction) and I have always seen capturing frigs as a bit of a waste of time, but i know that you can do it. (I left mission 3 with 4 capture capable craft after only building one marine frig (you do the maths)).
Is it possible all you have tried to capture so far is a carrier?
