    Guide to install the Zoom-Out-Mod

    still working Online and Ranked ! [2.602]

    Angoville: east-side of the map:

    since relic has not bothered about this "feature" yet (and imo will never do), here a comprehensive guide how to implement the zoom-out-mod which is working in ranked games too!

    just to make you know: this mod is "LEGAL" and has been known and working in ranked games since vanilla-coh-BETA!!! (more than 6 years ago)

    ----
    *Updated 12/19/2007*
    *Updated 01/04/2008*
    *Updated 08/22/2008*
    *Update 08/11/2011*
    **READ THE FOLLOWING CAREFULLY TO SAVE YOURSELF TIME ! (yes, you can mess up if you do it in a hurry!)**

    1.) you need to have a clean install of the game with every patch on it. [currently 2.602]

    2.) download this file: camera.lua

    go to your coh-directory and search for the \Data sub-folder. it should be something like C:\Programs\THQ\Company of Heroes\WW2\Data and place the unzipped(!) camera.lua file you just downloaded into the \Data folder.

    3.) download this small programm: Corsix ModStudio put all files of this programm in a new folder (name it like you want) and go to step 4.)

    4.) Load modstudio.exe and click "New Mod", choose "Mod is for: Company of Heroes", create the mod in your \Company of Heroes folder

    5.) In Mod Studio click the Tools tab in the left hand pane. Double click SGA Packer. Set the Input Directory as the data folder containing your camera.lua. Set SGA To Create as your ...Company of Heroes\WW2\Archives\ folder, call it WW2Data_camera.sga (this file has to be created!). Click Create. You can now close Mod Studio.

    ->klick the spoiler for a pic to see how it should look like

    how to complete step 5.)

    6.) find "RelicCOH.module" in your CoH game directory, back it up as "RelicCOH.backup" (without quotation marks; you HAVE to copy and rename the new RelicCOH.module to .backup else this mod wont work!).

    afterwards, change the properties of the original "RelicCOH.module" so it isn't read only, then open it in notepad.

    Find the line [data:common:01] and replace the text in that section with this

    folder = WW2\Data
    archive.01 = WW2\Archives\WW2Data_camera
    archive.02 = WW2\Archives\WW2Data
    archive.03 = WW2\Archives\WW2Art
    archive.04 = WW2\Archives\WW2Sound
    archive.05 = WW2\Archives\WW2ArtAmbient
    save the file

    thats it.

    ----

    feedback would be apreciated, if you have problems with the above steps or encounter an error, please post em so i can look into it, thanks!

    and last but not least, some pics to give you a feeling what you will get for all this 5-10 minute work

    PICTURES!

    ok i reinstalled a fresh copy of coh, redid all steps and it worked. to clarify step 4.) (since its the hardest part) i made a screenshot how your screen should look like when u are about to complete that step.

    in response to Mafiaso: dont execute the modstudio immediately after the download! unpack all files of that zip file into a new folder and execute the modstudio afterwards..you wont get errors if you do it this way.

    again, make at least a backup of your /WW2 folder in case u mess it up, which shouldnt happen anymore after this update

    you can also PM if you have questions

    ps: on a side note, after i reinstalled the game i started the game to see if everything works in vanilla...guys..i was shocked when i saw the standard view...that felt claustrophobic after being used the zoom mod, lol ;o)

    Great addition to replays and screenshot taking but hasn't helped my playing ability past anything it was without the mod, useful but can get the same info from the minimap surprisingly myself. But heck thanks for explaining in case I need to reinstall and can't remember the steps so I can take screenshots and view replays at even more different zoom lengths.

    imperial honour, i do respect your opinion but we had already a 15 pages long thread about this mod.

    the sole purpose of this specific thread is to help people with no programming skills (like me) to get this mod to work!

  9. #9
    Really nice mod. What a difference to the normal view.

    Unfortunately, on my PC I cannot get it work although I did everything exactly as described (checked several times).

    No error messages, everything works fine, just no modded zoom-out effect.

    Any tip someone? Maybe there's a prob/conflict with my sga edited skin files (which are also in the archives folder)?

    well, the problem must be in your edited sga files then since u made everything as described in my first post.

    since iam not a programmer i cant help you there....just try it on a fresh install..it should work. if not, then i might have to make the instructions even more comprehensive

    I did it and it all works, thanks mate, just wondering if this is alittle unfair to anyone that doesnt have it, and it made me play alot better.

    It's all in your head. There is no gameplay advantage from it.

    Wow that was just the thing I was looking for (I don't play multiplayer, so no effect for me there, but skirmish wow!).

    However two items:

    1. It did not work the first time (Fresh, fully patched install of COH-OF). I had to rename my "Copy of RelicCOH.module" to "RelicCOH.backup" as reported by another user in another thread. Then it worked perfectly. Didn't read your post carefully enough obviously :-)

    2. It breaks the "Backspace" return to default camera view key. It now defaults to a horrible top-down view instead of normal view we are all used to.

    Is there a way to fix the "Backspace" / Default Camera button to return to the regular camera view (Handy for when you've been zooming out and messing around horribly)?

    Thanks!

    i found this in the camera.lua file:

    *************************************************
    -- The default height or distance from the ground or target that the camera starts at.
    DefaultHeight = 75

    -- The default declination that the camera starts it. This is in degrees from the ground (0 would be pointed at the horizon)
    DefaultDeclination = 90 --38

    -- The default heading for the camera, i.e. which direction it is looking, north south etc.
    DefaultAngle = -90
    *************************************************

    someone would have to experiment with those numbers to get a better angle etc.....on a side note you can also reduce the maximal zoom out in this file!

    its a matter of time, and i guess u need alot of it cause u have to pack everything into the sga again after you changed the camera.lua just ONCE!

    you are welcome to give it a try ;oP

    When I click New mod, it brings up a screen asking me to set the languange, I click english and I get an error and it crashes.

    It also asks where u want the new mod to be created, where do u put it? (even so I cant put it anywhere, as it crashes when i create new and it asks for locale/language)

    the mod has to be created in your "/company of heroes" folder.....

    i suggest to use english ... it should not crash...unpack all files of that corsix zip file, latest release -> CDMS_054.zip (3 files + 1 folder) into a new folder and start the modstudio after

    first post updated

    So I have tried the mod and it works fine, but I have discover that I dont like play with too much zoom out and with other angle prospective.... I like the default angle camera of COH, I would only edit a bit the zoom out capacity of camera, anyone can tell me who is the parameter of increase only the max zoom out in camera.lua file?

    I have seen the distance range min/max 1/40 in the default files, where in the mod is 1/100 I have tried to edit 1/60 but without any changement...

    other question is about patching, when patch the game with official patches u must back to original module before install the patch?

    thanks for any info

    I've got this successfully working with the retail copy, but when I perform the exact same steps with my second installation of CoH (Team automatch Beta), this does not work.

    I've performed the steps twice now.

    Are you sure this works for beta?

    just a quick update. after a 7month hiatus iam back again and cleaned the guide a lil bit up and updated it.

    i had to reinstall the game 3times to make the mod working this time. game has to be completely patched before you apply the mod... it will break if you install the mod before the game is fully patched.

    just to save you some time...

    enjoy

  23. #23
    How do I find these files if the program was downloaded off of steam?

  24. #24
    It would be in your SteamApps folder.

    Odd, it strikes me that few of these people know how to mod...
    I guess they can just use the .sga version

    Thanks a lot man.

    Why does Relic not simply put on a double max zoom out button (or something more like a slider) in the video settings? This BS with DoW and CoH is grinding on my nerves. They are treating us like babies.

  31. #31
    Hi:
    By modding the camera.lua.. you can get the camera to whatever orientation and default distance u like... u might wnat to try and reduce the movement of the camera.. as with mine it's way to fast...

    I used to use this mod and loved it. I recently downloaded CoH Gold edition and patched to 2.6

    Now the mod doesn't work for me. Folders seem to be in different locations. ex: the "Data" folder is not found within the "WW2" folder. I still found it elsewhere and folllowed the steps but Corsix Mod Studio gives me an error.

    Any ideas?
    Thanks

    I'll forgive the rather generous bump, and will (finally after all these years!) move this to the How-To and tutorials forum where this is more suited to.
    Thank you for the guide though, diLuca. After recently getting back into CoH, I'll probably give this a go setting up.

  36. #36
    DiLuca,

    I tried your camera zoom mod instructions and it works great ... except for one major problem ... all of the buildings, bridges, etc. are pink. How do I fix the skins/coloring for the buildings/etc.?

  37. #37
    "...afterwards, change the properties of the original "RelicCOH.module" so it isn't read only, then open it in notepad."

    Do this AFTER you save your changes in Notepad or PSPAD or whatever you use. I completely forgot I had followed the OP directions to the letter and after 5 minutes of screaming at my computer I realized the directions were out of order - you cannot make any changes to the RelicCOH.module file while the file is R/O.

  38. #38
    Followup - this does not work in any way for me. I have the latest TOV update and no matter what I do the camera zoom stays exactly the same.

    Has anyone got this working with the latest patch?

  39. #39
    Cred to diLuca for his instructions, but still I feel there was room for a little confusion. So with the help of diLuca's version, I thought I would try my own instructions with some corrections\modifications (hope it helps somebody)

    **Do not use quotation marks "" shown in these instructions in your installation of the mod!

    1. make a backup of existing camera.lua (e.g. camera.bak) in "Company of Heroes\WW2\movies" folder (I had NO data folder btw)
    2. copy new camera.lua to "Company of Heroes\WW2\movies" folder
    3. run ModStudio
    a. Click "New Mod"
    b. Mod is for: Company of Heroes/Opposing Fronts
    c. Browse to your "Company of Heroes" install folder as destination for mod
    d. Click Tools tab
    e. Double click SGA Packer
    f. Set Input Directory to "Company of Heroes\WW2\Movies" (where new camera.lua is)
    g. Set SGA to Create as "Company of Heroes\WW2\Archives\WW2Data_camera.sga" (file name to be exact)
    h. Wait for completion (3-4 minutes maybe)
    i. Close ModStudio
    4. Create backup of "Company of Heroes\RelicCOH.module" file and rename to RelicCOH.backup (exact)
    5. Confirm RelicCOH.module read only attribute is off
    6. Open RelicCOH.module using notepad
    7. Look for [data:common:01]
    8. Replace paths with following:

    folder = WW2\Movies
    archive.01 = WW2\Archives\WW2Data_camera
    archive.02 = WW2\Archives\WW2Data
    archive.03 = WW2\Archives\WW2Art
    archive.04 = WW2\Archives\WW2Sound
    archive.05 = WW2\Archives\WW2ArtAmbient

    9. Save file (not Save As!)

    I had an odd problem where my profile was busy when I started the game? Eventually I logged in, started a Skirmish as a test and lo and behold, I could see all four corners of a 2 player map from my (very) high zoomed-out position!

  40. #40
    1. make a backup of existing camera.lua (e.g. camera.bak) in "Company of Heroes\WW2\movies" folder (I had NO data folder btw)
    I had no such file in my install directories so I just put the OP's file there.

    Followed your instructions to the letter but no matter no changes to the camera zoom

  41. #41
    Hello,

    I have tried the various ways described in this thread to install this mod. For some reason it just will not work. I also do not have the ww2/data file or the WW2/movies/camera.lua file.

    I have the CoH anthology, downloaded all the patches at install. I have even uninstalled/reinstalled the game just in case.

    Oh btw im new to modding, so be gentle lol.

    Thank you for any help/replies in advance.

  42. #42
    if you guys who are having problems just want camera zoom and don't care about online, all you need is to run in -dev mode with the camera.lua in your coh root's 'ww2/data' folder. no other steps required

  43. #43
    Will try this today - thanks!

  44. #44
    Reported thread to Admin already..., as far as I im being told and belive this is considered as ILLEGAL to use on Online/Ranked games and will cause of BAN on RelicOnline and Gamereplays.org

    What do you say here? It may be prohibed for Online/Ranked games, but it is not illegal to use it in all other matters. Please calm down.

  46. Technical Help Senior Member  #46
    This is perfectly 'legal', its a simple modification to the .lua file. Whether this translates as online compatible or not I am not sure, but the OP has added a disclaimer of sorts so I really dont see much of a problem. I would be interested in seeing some evidence of users being banned for using this modification, because as far as I am aware I haven't heard of anyone.

    Anyway, if you have anything to add please PM me. I dont want to see this thread get derailed any more than it has.

  47. #47
    Installed and working.

    One issue i have found though is i own the complete CoH (Tales of valor - Opposing fronts and the original) package i purchased and use via steam client, i loaded into the game and in the main menu i am met with the following issue as seen in the screenshots below:

    Yet when i start multi-player i can choose to use the British division and or the panzer elite, i can also play against either of those factions and loading them in multi-player game modes works.

    But i cannot play the single player campaigns as seen by the second image down i receive that message saying i do not have the content.

    NOTE: for the installation guide it was asked in step 2.) go to your coh-directory and search for the \Data sub-folder. it should be something like C:\Programs\THQ\Company of Heroes\WW2\Data and place the unzipped(!) camera.lua file you just downloaded into the \Data folder.

    For myself however that was not the folder location and instead it was C:\Users\irogue\Documents\My Games\company of heroes\ww2\Data

    I also have the -dev and -nomovies switches enabled as i play a lot of custom campaigns (this is the main reason i am using this camera mod is that some custom maps have very high buildings that can obscure game play and i personally dont see this mod as illegal considering ppl with larger screen resolutions get more of a birds eye view than those with lower resolutions in that logic wouldnt having a higher screen resolution be illegal if this mod was..) that are in .sgb format.

    I have Eastern Front mod installed but not active as those screenshots show, i also have a texture pack installed.

    If anyone can let me know whats missing or how to resolve this without disabling or removing the camera mod let me know please.

    Kudos to the OP and author of the mod tool and everyone who is helping this community.

    Hi,

    I'm Marcus2389, actually the CoH 2 Admin on Gamereplays.org. Being also one of the staffers involved in the "Fair Play Forum" over GR and companyofheroes.com official website I thought it was appropriate to come here and let you know that both Gamereplays and Relic/THQ are banning players for using the zoom-out mod since it allows players having a big advantage ingame being able to see bigger portions of the map and to easier control and micro units/tanks.

    Feel free to contact THQLynx (the actual THQ Community Manager for Company of Heroes 2) on the official website for further details!

    I don't know who diLuca spoke with but this mod is definitely not legal.

  49. #49
    Jeeesh.

    Bitebite @ post #44 created an account just to score points by reporting this thread - ironically he/she has not been back since then. And now you pop in probably because of your position and sense of responsibility to manage the 'herd' when it comes to mods. Did you read all the posts in this thread? Most of us, including myself are not using this for MP. In fact I probably played MP a handful of times and then it was with friends, buddies I have personal knowledge of and not someone I friended online. I bought the game with my hard earned money and immediately noticed a significant problem the default zoom presented - on a 22+ inch monitor it basically stifles the player with an annoying close up view. Kind of stupid in my opinion for a tactical RPG. Thank goodness for this mod is all I can say. If you folks at GR and Relic want to ban folks who play online, that is of course your prerogative and power to you! But please stop berating the people who play single player or with friends who want the game to be what it should have been.

    Thanks.

  50. #50
    Yes I read those posts, but the problem is that people outsite those posts installed and used it. An example: a couple of days ago we had to act vs a player that was streaming using the zoom-out mod, suspending him both from GR and from Relic Online and he said he got it here.
    This is just an friendly advise, it would be a shame if someone uses it without knowing that in multiplayer ranked games he would get suspended We really don't see any problem from using it in single player and skirmishes. What we care about is not seeing it used on the multiplayer competitive part (ranked games and tourneys). So it's more an advise to those that come here and want to download it ^^
