    Turning .aifr into .mp3

Hey, I was able to extract the music.big file, but I can't play it in a stereo unless I turn the .aifr music files into .mp3.

    Can anyone help?

You can convert the aifr files into wav files with winamp.

(I don't have winamp on this comp so this might be a little inacurrate
in the preferences you should got to the output part and instead of directaudio or something like that you should select the filewriter plug-in. I think you can select the file you want to write to in the options of the filewriter plug-in.

You'll need winamp and the aifr plug-in. You'll need the latest 2.x version of winamp because AFAIK the aifr plug-in does not work with 3.0.

    Steps:
    1) Load winamp.
    2) Load the Homeworld2 aifr files into the play list.
    3) Open the preferences and select the output plug-in tab.
    4) Select the Nullsoft Mp3 output plug-in.
    5) Press the configure button and select a directory for the mp3 files.
    6) Adjust the attributes if you desire and the press OK.
    7) Open the play list and select the first song then press play.

Winamp will then go through each song and convert it to an mp3 file in the directory you selected.

NOTE: When it finishes with the conversion, you need to go back to the output plug-in tab and re-select the waveOut plug-in to hear music.

    Aifr files = 220Mb Mp3 = 34.6Mb

Sorry for bringing up an old-ish thread, but when I try this, my winamp hangs up at 1 minute and 56 seconds :/ Any idea how to fix this?

try converting them to wave files first, then use another to convert them to mp3.

How to convert aifr in MP3:

    Programs that you'll need:

    Winamp
    Goldwave
    Lame MP3 codec

    1) First download and install Lame MP3 codec
2)After installing lame run Goldwave. hit F11. under teh volume tab select "What U hear"
3)Create a new audio file which is a little longer from the hw2 song (if the song is 5 min long make a 5:10 min audio file)
    4)Start the song at winamp.
    5)hit record at goldwave
    6) let the song finish
    7) From goldwave select "save as". Select mp3 and choose compesion
    8) repeat for every song you want

I assume that your winamp player plays *.aifr

yea but it's a lot easier to convert it to a wave file with winamp, then convert that to an mp3 with something like, musicmatch and poof your done in under 30 seconds
