    COH skill for sale!

After this latest debacle involving the company of heroes zoom mod being for sale online (pretty damn obvious on which worldwide website it is being sold on, even though the article doesnt state):
    http://www.gamereplays.org/community...owtopic=345052

Should Relic include this zoom ability in the next patch so that certain gamers don't get an unfair advantage over others. Does the zoom mod even give an unfair advantage?

I wonder what Relic's official position is on this.

404 not found ? And you were the one that owned me on seimos

i didnt own you, your resistance level was very high! I think they deleted the topic already as it was practically an advert for the zoom mod on an auction site.

Link broken, and if that zoom mod is really for sale thats a load of crap, relic should just disable its abillity to be used all together, consider it a hack. Giving it to everyone is not a good idea because enough people have frame-rate issues allready and the amount of zoom in the game is enough, the game is meant to be played at that level.

  5. #5
The zoom mod seems to be harmless compared to some other things...
Could/Should/Would HAVE. A verb. Not an adposition.

  6. #6
then why not enable it for everyone to use?

exactly Nickg07 otherwise people will happily spend the £3.00 to go and buy themselves the gaming edge. I mean it is so little money for an effective tool. Who isn't going to want it unless Relic include the zoom modifier within the game?

Was ist dis "zoom mod" yu speak of?

I presume it lets you Zoom out far to see more of stuff right?. Sure don't people with widescreen monitors have that advantage already.
A bit of pain never hurt anyone.

widescreen doesn't change anything. It stretches to fit iirc. And I for one would love to have that zoom mod. 21" monitor running a 5600 dual core with 2 gigs ram and my framerate is in the 60-70 area with an ATi 1950 pro 512 ram.

I know in the beta it warns if the players settings are too high so why not tellthem the same thing if the zoom rate is too far? Basically the same thing so no one will really be penalized.

id love a zoom out +1 function. it feels just "too" close to the action for me, to be strategic and macro properly id like to move out another notch or two...

not sure why relic would not allow it? or why they would allow people to use that mod on their servers whilst not making it available to every1?

Widescreens do show more (left and right). There have been several posts in the past in other threads showing screenshot examples showing the difference.

The issue of whether the zoom mod gives an advantage has been discussed also. Some say yes; others say the far zoom causes you to lose track of what is happening (damage/losses).

This 'mod' that is actually about 5 lines of half-baked code has gotten 4 million times the attention it deserves.

They're trying to sell it now? Please.
    Greyhounds are my favorite, still!

Fast panzer4! Coming soon, to a motorpool near you!

  13. #13
You can have the same "advantage" as a widescreen monitor if you just use a widescreen resolution on your regular 4:3 monitor, sure it'd look squashed, but if it's such an advantage, it's a small price to pay, right?

    Not THAT far from Relic.
IIRC, the zoom mod is actually posted i the Armory long before this "sale" (OK, I haven't licked the link so I'm going on what's in this thread) by several people, including the "It's a state secret" guy.

There was a post about this months ago and a rep from Relic said they'd look into it.

Although that was before they're servers became about as stable as the titanic.

Id rather lose to someone who has a better view of the map than me, then to art spam or a thoughtless inf blob.

There's nothing wrong with the titantic..it's the fools driving it that's the problem.

    OOOHHH he got you.

Isn't it illegal to sell a mod of a relic game? And assuming it is (which it should be for such a assinine mod. Seriously a guy explained how to do it yourself.) then wouldn't this entire thread be subject to warez and stuff like that?

Personally I want to see this thread die. It was discussed months ago and it always came down to 3 or 4 members saying it gave people an unfair advantage (two of whom were probably sympathy trolling themselves or something) and the entire rest of the community saying it made your view worse and didnt affect micro skill at all.

If it is illegal, I hope charges are pressed.

How does it help? I can see everything that I'm allowed to see with the limitation of the FoW just fine by using both the minimap and scrolling the camera. Am I missing something?

In my experience (using it as a part of a mod and not the original game) it doesn't. You can only really zoom out about 20-25% further before units begin to disappear from your screen either from fog of war or something else. It also takes a lot more graphical power to work, so you'll have to turn down your graphics considerably to use it.

And really, when your playing the game; it isn't how much of the battlefield you see it's how well you use your units that wins you the game.

^^ Well yeah. I've never tried it so I cannot comment on how much of an advantage it gives you. I don't cheat for the same reason I don't steal. I just like myself better that way.

Relic made the screeen size the way it is for a reason. So the maximum number of people could enjoy the game in the same way by keeping the system requirements down. The problem with this mod is that people with marginal systems (and we know how many of them there are right?) will want to use it.

More lag, more dropped games, more frustration, more bad attitudes.

They should fix it. It's not hard to do.

lol at buying this. anyone can mod this into the game. search for it in armory.

and yes, you might not believe this, but its known for 1 year you can mod camera to zoom out more.

never was a big deal, couple months back some guy made a huge deal out of it, and now this seeling on ebay? please.. hwo about check armory?

and to be honest it doesnt given any significant advantage:
    - since you can zoom out more, you see more of battlefield, but this doesnt remove fog of war
    - since your zoomed out, you miss on important things like grenade throw animation etc...

so realy no advanzage in using it. use minimap instead ffs...

and this is no diffrent than for example fps games with their console editing. here you just edit 1 file in coh folder.

also it is completely same procedure as changing hotkeys. im sure you dont htink that is hack aswell?

first off. it is illegal to sell off a modification of a game unless if you purchause rights to the engine which allows you to do as such. so if people are selling something which mods the in game code it is highly illegal and they can be sued for a breach in the EULA contract and arrested for some piracy laws.

second off. no, Zooming out more does not acctually increase the skill of a player nor does it give them any innate advantage. this is because the player already has an ultimate zoom out presented to him at the start of the game. ie the Mini map.

further more, even with out the mini map, because you could easily scroll over to the location or rotate/pan the camrea to better see in a certain direction, there is acctually no advantage the zoom out feature would add which isn't already present in the game. all zoom out would do is provide a more user friendly or less complex presentation of already in game advantages.

Well EULAs do not mean anything. EULAs are just there to try and intimidate you.

Interesting that it's the guys who know how to do it are the ones who are most anxious to convince the rest of us that it doesn't give them any avantage.

What is this mod???? Anyone care to explain what it does exactly?

Well I wish this mod was banned because I consider it a cheat. I really believe that anyone who uses it is a cheater and if they deny it with their semantic arguments that makes them even worse.

  29. #29
The mod allows you to change the maximum zoom out distance of the camera. Anyone can do it on their own. Takes about 5-30 mins. 30 mins for ur 1st time modding. After you mess around with it a few times, you can do it in 5 mins. Bunch of posts on the forums about how to do it already.

comprehensive guide how to install the Zoom-Out-Mod

this mod works online and in ranked games [2.602]

I dont see how it would help. Now if you could min the task bar, that would help a great deal. I almost never use the mini map, use tact more often. I would love to hit a key and have the task bar min like you can in replays.
