    Marines 2nd Edition Starter Marines?

Somebody still has those around to paint? My God, he must be the most horrible procrastinator known to man, and a shoddy painter to boot!

    Proof!

I'm finally getting around to painting my first army. I went with smurfs. (I know... I know...) I figured I might as well start out as vanilla as you can get. After I get my feet wet, I'll move on to more interesting things. I'm painting them up as 5th Company. Dunno why... I just liked the black trim.

The guys in the back don't have their bolters and hands done yet, but that's pretty quick. Then, I've got a lascannon, a sergeant, a dread, and a captain to paint. I'll probably paint them in that order, even though I've had the captain prepped for some time. That will get me to 500 points, and my first playable force.

I'm just trying to get these guys to a basic tabletop standard. It's taking me much too long, but I've other things to do, and I'm not at all fast yet. These guys are practice for me. I'm planning on spending a bit more time on the Captain, which is why he's last in line.

Nice. I chose to go with the 5th company for my codex chapter too.

The only 2ed stuff I've got is the starter kit. I bought it years ago, fully intending to start playing, and... yeah, never did.

Oh, something I forgot to include in my first post: I blame you guys for my ability to turn out something other than complete crap. I'm not saying these are good, by any means. It's just that I've tried a couple of times over the years to paint these, without any help from anybody who knew what they were doing.

Needless to say, the results were stunning. Thick, gloppy paint. No idea what a highlight was. (Not that these guys have any.) Poor attention to detail. The weeping and the gnashing of teeth. Thick, gloppy paint. They looked like they had melted, and not in that fantastic nurgly way that Svart has mastered. I think that they probably would have fetched about a 1.6 rating on CMoN. I shudder to think what would have happened if I'd gotten my hands on any minis other than the starter set back then.

I looked at the pictures from the 'Eavy Metal gits, and I was thoroughly discouraged. I never finished one.

Did I mention the thick paint?

I've been on here since October. In that time I've learned a great deal about painting, and everybody has been very supportive. The only mini that I've ever finished, the Stealthsuit that I painted for the mini exchange comp, is currently rated a 5.5 on CMoN, and I'm totally happy with that.

    Just sayin'

I've got a bunch of those guys still laying around, I also have a bunch of RT era marines from back when they were using lead. (no licking)

Actually, those are pretty good, a solid low tabletop quality. I'd be quite happy to see those across the table from me. I'd say add highlights, but unless you're not doing edge highlights it might actually detract from it somewhat. That, and I can see these being relatively easy to churn out a whole army of. Good work!

haha I still have some of those ancient edition marines! However, I have converted mine into fallen battle brothers, they tend to have chunks blown out of their armour etc...

I have a couple that I bought for cheap to bolster my army as I start out, and to have models I can learn to paint on that do not matter as much haha Either way, I think you are doing a real solid job on these guys. Will you be going back to add more details to these guys later?

Those are pretty good...but before you invest a ton more time into them...

Jeez, I'm not sure if I should tell you this. You'll either know it already, but I suspect not, in which case you'll curse me and beg the mods here to ban me or at least get shipped off to Siberia.

The Space Marines from that boxed set are ...

    ... um ...

Well, they're smaller than Marines you might buy later, be it third edition or even RT-era Space Marines. No joke. They're smaller by like a full 10-15%. It's very noticeable, especially if you're trying to buy things like Veteran Sergeants or Commanders. Now, you can sort of get away with that whole "hierarchical scale" thing with those guys, but you run into problems with things like guys with plasma guns or lascannons.

Good painting, but jesus, those Marines look a little like slumped, crotchety old men holding on to their Oxygen tank things.
