    [ToV] Cross of Iron [v1.20]

    We would heavily appreciate if feedback on the mod is sent to cross.of.iron.mod [AT] gmail [DOT] com. Though we will still continue reading the feedback posted in here, it will be much easier to have it all organized in our shared e-mail address.

    Features:

    Cross of Iron is a Company of Heroes (CoH) mod that’s main aim is to balance the four factions in the game and their respective doctrines.

    Its secondary aim is that of historical accuracy, but without making severe compromises in gameplay.
    One of the main features of this mod is that it intends to do the above without making major gameplay changes to the original CoH experience, so no one-hit-kill AT shots or huge-range Howitzers.

    A very important feature of Cross of Iron is tailoring the units, abilities and upgrades to be more specific for each Army Doctrine, balancing cons with pros, while also adding some new build options.

    As examples, the fearsome Knight’s Cross Holders are now available only to the Wehrmacht Terror Doctrine in order to give them a better late-game infantry unit and more incentive to play with, while the Panther needs an extra 'phase' in order to unlock it and the US receive an AT Bazooka Squad to better counter Axis armour.

    Another important feature would be the usage of High-Quality community skins that better differentiate one 'army' from the other as well as make the game more immersive, with different camos and accessories. These HQ skins carry on to the SP Campaigns as well.

    Cross of Iron 1.20 released!

    The much expected Cross of Iron 1.20 is here and brings with it expanded doctrines for all the factions in CoH as well as some new units.

    Here's an example of how they look:



    The US Infantry company now also has Anti-personnel mines, a 40mm Bofors AA Gun and a Sherman 105mm available.

    Permission

    In the past, people have been releasing mods and skinpacks including other people's work without asking permission or giving credit to the original authors... including one where large parts of Cross of Iron were ripped off with the author claiming it to be his own work.

    Due to this, anyone wishing to use any work from Cross of Iron with the intention of possibly releasing/making available to the public, will have to ask myself for permission and outlining exactly what they wish to use.

    Also, keep in mind that most of the skins and models used within Cross of Iron are the property of authors not directly involved in this mod. See the attached CoI Copyrights.txt file for a full list of who owns what. Let's put a stop to this rubbish and make sure everyone gets credit for their hard work!

    Eh, well it was a toss up between wether i should even release it, especially with all the difficulties with uploading it (damn 32k!). Hell i nearly let it die thanks to the v2.3 patch, i had to pratically rebuild it from scratch... not fun. So now i'm just wrapping stuff up, finalising some things, and playing with some ideas.

    AI Behaviour

    The Brits now call in gliders aplenty (i don't know what i did), but it seems it's usually only in sectors that their base trucks are in, they build most units from their gliders including the commandos and tetrachs, although fo whatever reason they seem to be able to land their gliders in water or let them crash into each other on the ground.

    All factions now build all their new units and purchase their new upgrades, and for the most part in suitable quantities without spamming them. The only issues is the Wehr AI rarely buys the Gun Car upgrade, still preferring the Flammenwerfer upgrade, and the Airborne prefer to get their upgrade for the Thompson and M1 Garands, and only get a few Recoiless rifles now and again.

    Also for whatever reason the Brit AI likes to go Commando, with Royal Engineers and Arty docs being a close second, and the US AI prefers to go Armoured or Airborne with Infantry being last. But for good reson with the various buffs they got, yet with Infantry doc being relatively untouched.

    Looks intresting....however can I make just some minor suggestion...
    Since you're sticking to normal game play, instead of adding the bazooka team you could potentially just add a single bazooka upgrade for the Engineers unlocked once weapons center is up...
    Also, have you tried giving the Stug the same movement stats as a P4 and changing re-load to 6-6.5.
    The reasons being, with re-load of 5 and unchanged damage modifiers they will chew up buildings/defences/infantry in no time causing an issue..
    The 'ready aim' time is 1.5 unlike the hetzer/jagdpanther which is 0. Thast one of teh reasons it takes a year and a half to line up shots. So dropping it to 0.5 would be worth it I recon...

    Thats for the suggestions Widowmaker. The main reasons for the StuG weapon buff was it took so long to aim and fire. I don't know about the movement stats, but the ready-aim time is a must and i'll play around with the reload time and see how it works out. ATM i said it was an average of 5, this is because it varies between a max of 6 and a min of 4. I'd actually imagine a StuG would have a faster reload time than it's turreted relative as the fighting compartment was generally roomier in a tank destroyer than the turreted variant (the hetzer being the odd one out), but since a Tier 3 tank being able to fire faster than it's Tier 4 brother would be kinda imba, OP, etc, etc. i figured the same would be fine. The more that i think about it now though your quite right as a balance argument and as a gameplay argument, right now the StuG can hold it's own against infantry and poorly microed tanks, which on it's own isn't quite right, so i think the reload time should be lengthened a tad after all, somewhere in the figures you suggested.

    Screens are still a little way off, not to mention my machine isn't really up to good quality high-res shots, nor my net connection up to uploading them. Clearly modding isn't something people who are always broke are meant to do.

    PJ; funny that, i named my mod after the movie of the same name, after racking my brains for days i couldn't come up with anything original, and i saw that movie title while sorting through my war movie collection and liked it as a title. I knew it sounded familiar, so perhaps you did release it or make mention of it somewhere, but i searched around all the CoH sites i frequent and nothing came up so i figured to go with it.

    Well, I never really saw the reason why the Stug didn't have the same movement stats as a P4. Its a P4 without turret and was actually lighter than the P4 by a couple of tons!

    Gameplay wise, it will allow it to back off in time from an AT gun more often than it does now and stop it being a somewhat sitting duck. Just test it and you'll see what I mean...

    Release date is still a while off as i still have to secure somewhere decent to get the file hosted, ATM the plan is to upload it to filefront, but we all know just how bad that is for many people.

    Good news is that all the skins have been decided and confirmed, and i've got permission back from all the authors to use their skins or components. So there'll be no more slacking off here regarding screens, and i should have a pile uploaded later tonight!

    Whee! the v0.8 beta is released! Technically it's fine as is except for a few bugs and seemingly 1 stealth change, but development continues and i haven't been able to resolve some important issues which is really what's keeping this from being an alpha release from the get-go (which is what i really was aiming for).

    So stop reading here and drop up to the first post and download it!

    I see on your first screenshot that an MG42 hmg is deployed inside the mortar Bunker. Did you change something or is it the only place where it can fire?

    No, the Mortar Bunker doesn't need to be garrisoned to be used, and MG teams and any infantry can fire out of any or all of the vision ports.

    How is my download link weird? I know it screws around and makes you jump through a few hoops just to start the download, but it was really either that or FileFront, which i know a lot of people have troubles with. If you can recommend a better site which doesn't delete the file after a period of time (like Zendfile does), i'll be happy to use it instead for the release of the next version.

    Cpt Mackay, do you know what the problem is? Is the game crashing on startup, or are the changes just not working? The shortcut provided in the mod will only work if you CoH is installed to the default location, and the shortcut won't work with a Steam version of CoH. and it might run into difficulties with Vista as well. If you are having issues with it, try creating your own shortcut, or using CoH Launcher.

    Up towards the top of the site above the really massive ad, your asked to enter some letters into a box, you do that and click OK and it'll take you to the download page. Sometimes though you might have to enter the letters into the box a couple of times, i don't know whats up with that, but it happened to me while testing the link.

    Oh, sure just give me credit in the readme and anywhere else credits are listed. Also while most of the icons are my own work, a lot, and especially the skins included in the mod aren't my own work, so if you want to use them you'll have to approach the original authors.

    How do you make, that when your units get out of them, it won't turn to the world (so it's not yours anymore?)

    Just because there hasn't been any info posted in a while doesn't mean this mod is dead. I've been working very hard on this almost daily since the release (in addition to other CoH projects), and there's a lot to show for it. First off, the Staghound and Schwimmwagen have been added (not too ground breaking at this point), there's a lot more skin variations and mixed models added, some new units, doctrine tweeks, the C47 added to all airborne drops, a Stuka Zu Fuss halftrack added to the Waffen-SS, Bergetiger can now lay democharges, and all on-map artillery recharge times increased.

    The latter is because there is two ways to limit on-map arty spam, 1. add a munitions cost, or 2. increase recharge times. I went for the latter as i don't think drawing a player munitions for on-map artillery is right as it also pays for off-map and most doctrine abilities, not to mention it wouldn't hurt the British much with the amount of munitions excess they usually gather.

    Sorry about not having any new screens up yet, but you can all look for a new readme with a comprehensive list of changes and screens in the new week, and you can all expect the v1.0 release within the first week of November, and thats a promise!

    Good to hear, you work on this daily! When you release this: May I use teh C47? I can't get it working.

    First off, the Staghound and Schwimmwagen have been added (not too ground breaking at this point).
    Not sure if that's allowed, BotB removed the schwimm too.
    On the other hand: If they don't like people who use them, they shouldn't make it public before official release.
    When you release you next version, may I use them?
    I got some problems with downlaoding the Balance Playtest.

    Sure, i don't really see the problem with the public using files that are presented to them in a Public Beta... it's the same as using hidden content from the original game.

    The two Sdkfz250 Halftracks by the bridge on Vire? Their from Halftrack's OF Skin Preview pack.

    News Update

    I know i've been a little slow on the screenshots which i promised, i'm still sorting through the hundreds in my collects for the newest and best. I do however have the new Readme i promised with the very latest (as of 6:30pm today) Changelog for you to all decipher and enjoy at the first post

    The release is still on track for early November, so lets all cross our fingers and hope the next patch isn't released before then.

    Yeah, it would be horrible for mods when a new patch will come, because we need to change everything again.
    But if Relic is as good at releasing Mod Tools as releasing Patches, then don't expect a new patch soon.

    Also, I forgot to change my question, which are the Grenadier skins on the same picture at the bridge?

    v0.9 with the Staghound and Schwimmwagen hasn't been released yet, but i'm still on schedule for a release in early November, around the 9th or 10th. At the moment i'm just slowing down on the modding and i'm putting all my attention to bug fixing and preparing the package for release, sorting out the documentation and seeking permissions.

    There are a heap of files you need for them... abilities, ebps, sbps, slot items, weapons, upgrades, ui icons, model files, skin files, etc. I've got a few packages set up with the Staghound and Schwimmwagen configured for various factions and to be different from the host vehicles they'll replace in the DLC/Tales of Valor. i'll drop you a PM with more info.

    Lethal Dosage, I'd be careful about using Stagehound and Schwimmagen. All of those units given by the Playtest Beta had a DLC requirement in their files, and Relic removed access to the unit completely with later beta patches. I'm pretty sure this is a good indicator that Relic is intending to make these units available as a gift to players who buy the DLC Tiger Ace Campaign when it is released.

    Buggo expressly told us to avoid making mods where OF material could be made to non-OF buyers, and I'm pretty sure this falls under that category. I'd recommend keeping these units on the down-low until we have some official wording that allows us to use them. Otherwise, it could be looked at as stealing.

    Also, I am so curious which skins you all used, and where to downlaod them? Because I really love them.

    Well the Flammpanzer38(t) isn't in the game anymore, it's still in the v0.8 release but it won't be in v0.9, as i was never really satisfied with it without any flame FX.

    All the skins used in the mod (bar a few i modified myself) are from skin packs available on these forums, if you want a detailed list i'll PM you a copy of the one i have for record keeping next time i'm on. By that quite i mean i got Halftrack's Waffen-SS Grenadier skin and manually edited it by copying the Dot44 camo trousers from the Stormtrooper skin and adding it to the Waffen-SS Grenadiers.

    Edit: On the topic of the Staghound and Schwimmwagen, I've fully credited Relic for the models, etc. and since the files have been released to the public in the Beta, i don't see it as stealing, nor as dishonestly distributing goods that people are expected to pay for since they've already been inadvertantly provided to the public and the modding community. If Relic didn't want us to have/use them in some way, they wouldn't have included them in the Beta, and hell their developers. Their not forgetful enough to accidently leave them in if they didn't want the community to get the files, and with all the internal crap they have to put patches (and the Beta) through before it goes up for download, someone along the lines would have had a checklist of stuff not to release.

    Since including them in the proposed v0.9 release i've been torn 50/50 between leaving them in or waiting for whatever their in to be released. Since their in, they'll stay in unless someone from Relic emails me and politely asks for me to remove it, or if the hand of God comes down and knocks my teeth out.

    thanks for the good work u put on but i cant play it evn as the shortcut can u pls give me a feedback it runs as the normal game not as the mod thank you

    sorry to make it more clear i can run cross of the iron mod 8 but your new mod doesnt run maybe im doing something wrong. hope this message helps. and would like to thank all the people creating the mods. good work and it makes this game more fun to play.

    It doesn't work because it doesn't have the files tha tare required to run it.
    The only thing there is the module file and it does't do anything without the mod folder with all the stuff in it.
