Thought some of you might like to see this. It's a 20+ minute demo by Ubisoft of Far Cry 2.

Well, I'm not too hyped honestly. Crytek FTW, this is Ubi. Game looks decent though.
#3
The setting and whole colour sheme and visuals are quite unique. Sounds interesting, looks nice, not over-the-top graphics, but it matters where it's important.
Also, nice crash ^_^
The initial loading takes quite a bit, but if the rest is all dynamic, so i guess it's all good. This and stalker will be fill my fps and exotic gaming needs for the near future![]()
*mildly disgusted with negative price discrimination*

The game looks fantastic and i love the setting. Personally i think this sounds a lot more interesting then the original so i am kind of happy a different studio is on the job. If crytec was doing it i would anticipate half through there would be aliens crash landing and trying to kill me with fire, since last time they used ice.
meh...the video did not impress me much. I was a HUGE fan of the original FarCry, and was disappointed when I first heard FC2 would practically have NO connection to the first. However, the demo just did not impress me. The graphics seemed a little sub-par, the shootouts seemed more so even. This of course could have more to do with the quality of the video, but I remain skeptical.
I will of course wait until more info is available before making any sort of actual verdict though. I'm intrigued to see more, but not hopeful that it will change my thoughts.
#6
the game play video was awesome in my opinion. It kept the farcry feel in the combats, but advanced the world reality, just like I've got used to from farcry and crysis. I'm also a sucker for sandbox FPS' so thats another great bonus for me.
I wonder if they'll throw in a city or two, or keep it to savana/bush fighting, because I'd love to have a huge fight in some place like Mogadishu.
#7
The graphics seemed a little sub-par, the shootouts seemed more so even.So it's not crysis.
Which is actually good, since it might just work on older pc's with overall lower system requirements. plot-wise it unrelated to farcry, but it's basically FarCry in the African savana, desert, and jungle, and is hence win.![]()
![]()
i wonder how many goats i'll have to sacrifice to get some type of unholy computer which will run this game...
key thing
50 Kilometers of World to explore!
thats more than oblivion!
which means 49 kilometers of world will be vast emptiness devoid of life.
Looks awesome.

Actually this is precisely why I love Crysis. I don't want to steer the thread in another Crysis graphics discussion, but being able to play Crysis on 1 GB ram and 8400 GS while retaining awesomeness is one reason I love the game. I doubt Far Cry2 is going to run on my machine and still look decent though :\.Which is actually good, since it might just work on older pc's with overall lower system requirements.
@Soulbligher:
Farcry IS Crytek, :P. I'd even say Crytek invented the sandbox FPS style (well of course not, but they are the only ones who have done a good job at implementing sandbox gameplay). Farcry without Crytek is heresy.
It looks good I just keep getting distracted by that annoying guy shouting about the game while he's killing people, makes the video less entertaining.
Like I said, it could just be the video. However, when he was in the building near the beginning talking to that Frank guy, the interior looked so....blah. I understand it's some place out in the bush, but it still looked flat and blah even with that.
Once again....I'll give it the benefit of the doubt and say it was probably the tiny low quality video.
#13
i think that's because there's little direct light in the house hence the very flat-nature. That and the low-resolution/blurry video. Although, does that really matter?
Also, the constant syringing his wrist for what i assume is health replenishment is a bit...strange. I think they've played too much bioshock.![]()
#14
Hahahahaha yeah that freaked me out a bit as well.
I gotta admit though. Africa is a awesome place for a sandbox FPS and the fire-spreading effect they had going on there looked totally awesome.
It bothers me when game animations get gun mechanics wrong. Example: the player racking the cocking handle on his MP5SD3 in the video when swapping out a magazine that wasn't empty. The mod for Half Life 1, Firearms, got these animations right with later versions, simply swapping mags when reloading when not empty but adding more animation when reloading when completely empty.
Bonus points for animating the opening of doors and exit of vehicles in the game. Something I remember was the PS2 shooter Killzone, where the player's view shifted accordingly when the player sprinted or was reloading, and the view would pitch down and move as the reloading animations played. Details like this contribute to the immersion factor of a game, I think.
#16
Very, very few games get this right. Crysis did, and I appreciated the nod to realism (and the extra bullet in the clip because of it), but when even CoD4 doesn't include the mechanic, there's not much hope for a more arcadey FarCry 2.It bothers me when game animations get gun mechanics wrong. Example: the player racking the cocking handle on his MP5SD3 in the video when swapping out a magazine that wasn't empty. Also, I wouldn't worry about system specs. A brand new computer that can play Crysis on High settings can be had for $650, which will probably be $600 by the time FarCry 2 and Crysis: Warhead are released. If you're willing to setting for Crysis's Medium settings (which is really equal to most games' High), you could probably get a new box for little more than $300 at this point.

Remember that we don't all live in the country of susbsidised electronics.
Spoiler
A decent 8800 or equivalent card will set you back £150, £200+ for a good cpu & motherboard, another £80 for ram, and you quickly reach £430 which is $860. Similar situation for euros. For you americans, yes, electronics are cheaper, but that only applys to you. don't forget that. the rest of us have to dish out much more money to get the same hardware, and hence upgrading or buying a new pc in parts is not as cheap as you think it is.
That said, the unique environment, and openness of the game pretty much has me sold.
#18
Ammon, if you are paying 160 dollars for RAM, something is really really wrong. A 2GB RAM stick is worth 40 bucks, yeah electronics in the US is cheaper but the difference cannot be 4 times as much.
#19
8800? Why are you aiming so high? Try an 8600GT or ATI equivalent, which can be had for under $75 on newegg. Electronics aren't subsidized by anything in the U.S., any added cost on your end is from higher taxes.
The Crytek recommended box for Crysis (to play "silky smooth, with all the bells and whistles turned on") is a Pentium E2180, DVD drive, 160 GB hard drive, 2GB RAM, Geforce 8600GT, Vista, and case/mobo. And their case/mobo is a mini, which means getting a cheap regular case and mobo would shave another $50+ off the price. Seriously, Crysis does not require a godbox unless you absolutely must play every game at Very High at 2560x1920.
What a sidetrack to the thread?
I never got round to trying out FarCry (1), but I intend to make up for it by blasting mutant monkeys the second time around.

Comparing price of goods without comparing income really doesn't say anything.

As awesome as the demonstration was, I was immensely disappointed at the sight of an almost entirely wooden structure refusing to catch fire. The thatched roof does, of course, and so do the trees and grass and all that awesome stuff, but despite their best efforts I did not see the overall structure itself set ablaze. It's an annoying little disconnect from the otherwise delicious break/burn everything mentality that initially drew me toward the game.
I still find it a little amusing, though, that Far Cry 2 under Ubisoft is shaping up to be far more open-ended than Crysis was.
Yea I was a bit annoyed at it not catching fire but maybe the flame wasn't strong enough or something? It seems odd they'd put in a burnnig mechanic but then not have wood catch fire.
I was also a bit dissapointed at seeing the rocket launcher hit the watch tower and it not collapsing or taking damage.
#24
Indeed. That was one of the things that killed what should have been an enjoyable facet of Crysis: wrecking buildings. What's the point of blasting through walls or burning rooftops when it makes no impact on the structure as a whole?
Hopefully in the full game they'll implement some kind of building-destruction mechanic for those of us who want to raze every village in the area for kicks.![]()
#25
It looks amazing. Loved Far Cry. Loved Crysis. Don't see any reason why I shouldn't love this.
The only thing missing is indeed the ability to completely flatten an area if you want (with explosive for harder things, and fire for wood.
I'd love to see good mod support for this Oo, just think the potential mods!
#27
As long as this game is like the first except without the retarded genetically engineered monkey-alien-things, it'll be brilliant.
In Soviet Russia, forums moderate YOU!
Aww, This makes me annoyed there's no MMO-style open world FPS games which are coming out. It be great fun to try to smuggle drugs in a little boat down the river, avoiding the border guards played by players xD
Oh well, this is the step in the right direction.
#29
TLK - IIRC you can destroy buildings in FC2. I may be wrong though.
Check out the latest 4xxx series from Radeon. Cheap and powerful. I am excited to see healthy competition in the graphics card market again (with an emphasis on affordability it appears, though I am sure there will be top-notch uber-expensive options).
#30
I'm sure you can destroy some buildings, 5th, just like you could destroy various shacks in Crysis. What disappoints me is that the larger, more complex (non-shack) structures seem rather impervious to any serious structural damage. The only examples I saw in the video were the canopies catching fire and some of the walls being destroyable. Despite the destroyed walls, however, the supports themselves never seemed to fail. Even if I disregarded the wooden structure adequately catching fire, the guy launched an explosive at the guard tower (and several grenades at the "Dust Town" structure, if I recall correctly) and nothing seemed affected when the smoke cleared.
I'm probably expecting way too much from Ubisoft but for once I'd just like an FPS where I can actually take down structures - all of them - with suitably heavy weapons. I mean, heck, imagining dishing out a few extra hundred bucks to get an RPG so that, rather than try to assault the enemy base directly, you can simply fire a surgically-aimed rocket into one of the primary supports and cause half the structure to fall on their heads. I imagine if such things were viable that explosives capable of taking things of that complexity out would be extremely rare, of course, but the option existing is all I really want.

Give it a couple of years TLK, games will eventually all have destroyable buildings.
If the ability to destroy stuff is ingame, I'm sure there's mods which can "expand on that" to say the least. I'm also sure that with mods you can make virtually anything catch fire ingame, so if there's any problems it can be tweaked.
#33
Oh no! The water is on fire! Put it out! Put it out!
#34
Yeah, that setup Ammon described would quickly eat up half my takehome pay for a week's work, ouch...Comparing price of goods without comparing income really doesn't say anything.
I was wondering the whole time he was up on the roof why somebody didn't just shoot the floor/roof out from under him if all the environments are destructable. Why didn't the AI hear his steps on the roof of the building and respond? Wasn't there an RPG sniper?
#35
I don't want to wait.
Ah well. Maybe someone will mod it in.
#36
The water looks improved. They've got some nice water lilies and a nice murky look to the water. The destructible branches aren't anything new. Not sure why they touted that. The player carries that rocket launcher like it weighs nothing. Voice acting seems better in the original FarCry.
Story line was ok in original FarCry. I'm hoping that FarCry 2 will have more emphasis on story and characters since they aren't pushing the graphics boundaries.
Every FPS recently tauts it's awesomely maneuvering AI. I hope someone finally delivers. They haven't so far.-
The announcer's voice is really annoying me.
I think the proof is in the crowd. When the original FarCry was shown people went crazy. The announcer had to really try and pump the crowd up this time around.
FarCry was sweet. FarCry 2 looks a tad heavy on the cheese.
FarCry2 has a lot to live up to though. FarCry 1 was a very good, immersive FPS, IMO.
What are you smoking mate? Far cry was immensly cheesy, with a crappy story which could of been pulled from some 80's B movie horror flick. Mutant monkeys don't help for immersion, the original Far cry went to hell when the mutants with rocket launchers were introduced.
This game has taken the good elements of Far cry, the more open world and blown it out of the water.
Also which games have destructable buildings/trees?.. Erm.. crysis? So I don't see how it's "nothing" new if only one previous game has it in.
I'm not sure about you but the graphics look great, I don't see how they could really do anything better without forcing people to buy new rigs.
#38
Crap. I didn't mean FarCry. I meant Crysis. I don't know what I'm smoking but it has me seriously confused. >_< Far Cry 1 was horrible story.

I'm sold on that line.

Ive just completed Crysis (excellent game imo) so I may give this a look into. Never played the original Far Cry though.

They srsly need some anti-aliasing though. Maybe on the next gen boards, heh.

Hmmm...burning oil slicks on water...
offtopic price-hardware talk.
2x1Gb @ 800Mhz = 2 x 15.25 = £30.5 = $61
Okay, so i exaggerated.
42£ gigabyte 'decent' motherboard. = $84
AMD Athlon 64 X2 5200+ Socket AM2 £48.95 = $97.9
8600GT 512Mb pci-e £46.95 = $93.9
Sub total: £168.47 $335.8 €210
Okay, it doesn't look that expensive, but that doesn't include all the other bits and pieces which all add up, and the graphics department isn't very future proof. So i guess i was wrong then.
If I can stomp through the African bush burning tree, man and gazelle then I'm sold.
Really though flamethrowers.

The gameplay doesn't appear to be that smooth. It looks like it has kind of a choppy feel. What I want in any FPS is smooth gameplay. COD4 or Half-Life 2 has the type of gameplay I seek. Everything move you make feels elegant.
The true mind can weather all the lies and illusions without being lost. The true heart can touch the poison of hatred without being harmed. Since beginning-less time, darkness thrives in the void but always yields to purifying light.
Yes, but will I be able to immolate Zebras?
I think we'll have to see for ourselves, the gameplay might feel fine when you get the hands on it with a smaller screen. And yea you can burn zebras maybe even lions o=
#47
The game they showed probably isn't optimized yet. So I wouldn't make to strong of an opinion on choppiness yet.
I laughed at that error and the way the guy said Noooo!
Dear god i hope they optimize it right.

very impressive looking map editor. Have to say that sold me the game right there, hope it's as easy to use as they claim as tbh I'd probably spend mroe time making levels than playing. I also hope its easy to share them, even on the console versions.
