    Wall-E

So, watched it today, and I have to say, it's incredible.
It's my top favorite movie of all time now, with it's amazing story, theme, interactions between the robots, people, and how amazing it just is.
Anyways, anyone else watched it yet? And if so, what do you think?

Uhm, I thought it was alright. Saw it today myself. It had a nice message, and it was funny at times. But I thought it wasn't "incredible" or a movie I will want to see again for awhile.

I liked it for its technical merit and I think that WALL*E himself is the most lovable of all of Pixar's characters so far. I think that what makes it so good is that the story largely relies on little dialect and a whole lot of non-verbal communication, but manages to get the point across successfully anyhow.

Haven't seen it yet, but I'd strongly agree with Exetus just from the trailer and the little vignettes. Wall-E reminds me of Charlie Chaplin a fair bit.

I don't watch TV (At all, seriously, the TV hasn't been turned on since the end of the last season of Heroes), so I haven't seen the commercials and trailers.

Is it as much fun as Kung Fu Panda? That's my question.

It's a Pixar film. The question regarding any CGI film should be "Is it as fun as the last Pixar film?".

    This sig is within guidelines.

Haven't seen it yet, but Pixar is brilliant. And Wall-E looks brilliant in both comedy and CGI. I'm glad it relies on little dialogue, since its a children's film it will most deff get dubbed in spanish in all theatres here (I hate all sorts of dubbing), but I might be able to still enjoy it. Well Pixar is so brilliant that even their movies dubbed are a whole bunch of fun, and I don't want to miss this one on the big screen.

It sounds fun. Also, CONTROVERSY: the people in Wall-E are fat, as they are apparently greedy and lazy. Then there's the microgravity thing. Anyway, they get people saying "OMG THIS FILM IS BLAMING FAT PEOPLE FOR BEING LAZY AND DESTROYING THE ENVIRONMENT".

Saw it yesterday and really liked it. Some of the Earthen vistas are simply incredible.

I love how a G movie is better then all of the movies I've seen this year. I loved it. The characters were great. The Earth enviorment was breath taking. Their were a lot of subliminal clicks to todays problems (the enviorment, obesity, the president, ect.) but I ignored it, and enjoyed the movie just as much.

It was interesting to see how you can get so much character out of a robot who hardly talks in the movie. Really great.

Ah finally, Avatar_720 provides the informed opinion.

I'm definitely going to see this. I love the concept, and Pixar is simply the best at what they do. Their humor is significantly more sophisticated than many other kids' movies currently.

I watched it yesterday, mostly spontaneous. It was an excellent movie, for all the reasons previously stated (minus Avatar's). I wasn't bored, and didn't end up feeling like I was waiting for the next scene, as some movies do. I live on a tropical island, which means we have insects, and I was amazed that Wall-E had a bug in it I didn't want dead. I kid you not, a theatre full of people - who have cans of bug killer strategically placed in their homes - holding their breath.

what bothered me. For those who saw it already.

I love Pixar. You know writers are good when they can go through the first forty-five minutes of a movie without any dialogue whatsoever and you barely even notice.

You at the barricade listen to this!

Their humor is significantly more sophisticated than many other kids' movies currently.
More sophisticated than a lot of adults' movies too.

Kushan_Pilot - they did show lots of other ships taking off at one point, and the CEO apparently left on a yet later ship - perhaps since Wall-E never arrived to cause mayhem anywhere else, those other ships are all still under control of their Auto-Pilots, and it was simply coincidence (of the cinematic variety) that he found the particular ship mentioned in the commercial.

Also - those have got to be some of the coolest end credits ever. I liked Ratatouille's also, for being traditional animation. Not quite as funny as bloopers, but even those would've gotten stale by now, I wager. Nice to see 'em trying different stuff.

I loved the movie and it is in fact my 1 movie, second movie Fifth Element and third Bridge on the River Kwai. I will buy this movie in a heart beat and if it was a PSP movie I would buy that too. If not I'm going to convert it to PSP.
Yea one ship came back. Might be an opening for a second movie*I HOPE NOT DONT TOUCH IT EVER AGAIN!* but all the other ships are under their captain, but not coming back so far.

But I guess it's your opinion. Neverthless, it's too bad you are making opinions about a movie that you didn't even watch yet.

And Kusahn_Pilot, people not on Axiom probably came after them since they MIGHT have heard about rumors/news that people are coming back to Earth.
Or maybe they all died by AUTO. I loved that guy.

I liked Wall-E too. Saw it on a 4:30 matinee on opening day.

I also agree with those who said that the writers are geniuses if the movie had as little dialogue as it did and you never noticed it. Fantastic work using anything but spoken words to get things across.

And yes, Wall-E is by and far the cutest character I've seen Pixar generate. I mean, who the hell else has the artistic and creative chops to make a robot more adorable than anything fuzzy, furry, googly-eyed, or talking in squeaky voices? It pretty much outdid a Portal turret in my list of Insanely Cute Things.

I also loved all the various rips and digs on assorted sci-fi movies, 2001 being one of them (You'd have to see the autopilot to get the hint...). Some were subtle, others were more blatant.

I also wouldn't blame people for blasting Pixar for a movie about clueless fatties, but I will just say this: Fatties are probably way easier to render believably than thin people. Notice how all the thin ones seemed to be from film clips neatly inserted into the movie? (ie. the commercials, the CEO, and so on.)

The chubbiness just happens to work into the story, as the ship was probably provisioned (and its replicators loaded with recipes of) mostly fattening pleasure and junk foods. It wasn't intended for keeping people alive--just for keeping them happy. As you can guess that doesn't always fit, especially in a society already used to supersized meals, emotional eating, sedentary lifestyles.

I'd have to say this one probably was the strongest in terms of political/social commentary than any Pixar movie, period. I don't know if they intended it, or if it just got worked in as a way to move the plot along. But I enjoyed it nevertheless, and it's nice to see Pixar tackling these issues in a way that still make for a heartwarming story.

Easily the greatest piece of American animation I've ever seen. Also the best movie I've seen so far this year.

By far, the best movie I've seen this year so far as well. As for a political statement, I think it does a good job of working in the environment issues and obesity and those are both issues that need to be addressed. WALL*E will, of course, be on the DVD list of things to buy.

Oh the irony of mass produced DVDs of Wall-E.

Just got back from watching Wall-E. I have one thing to say to Pixar: STOP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

You just made your perfect movie. Stop, retire. Leave it there.

I jest, but seriously, Wall-E will be a movie that future animators/directors/artisans grow up talking about. It's going to be the seminal moment in many young artisan's lives. It's that good of a film. I don't know what else to say. Wall-E is what other movies should be.

I tried very hard to not cry at the end. I failed. I cried over a fraking robot. Wow. And I cared about a cockroach. I just killed a real one last night. I hate cockroaches. I hate them passionately. I loved the cockroach in Wall-E.

Anyways, a multi-page essay could easily be written discussing how Wall-E is so great. But that would take away from the magic of just experiencing the movie.

I hope they don't stop, since every one of their movies is solid gold (okay, maybe the Incredibles is just really shiny silver, but most of them...) I haven't seen it yet but am looking forward to it after reading this thread. I'm not so sure it'll beat out Monsters Inc. yet, but we shall see.

no way, Incredibles was Solid Gold too.
The Shiny Silver has to be Monster INC imo. At first I thought it was made by Dreamworks heh.
All Pixar movies have to be over or equal to 90 percent imo, all A or A+

I remember the early pixar films, such as the toy story series, and though i have not seen WALL E yet, not many pixar films have compared to the original brilliance of that movie,
WALL E sounds like a loveable version of R2D2, correct me if i'm wrong

Shrek and Kung-Fu Panda were better than any of the Pixar movies IMHO (Still having not seen Wall-E, so...).

The Incredibles is about on par with Shrek. But Kung-Fu Panda is better than both.

Kung Fu panda had some awesome moments. But I saw the two movies one after the other. Well, I saw WANTED in between, but you get the idea. WALL-E was a totally different level of production. Kung-Fu Panda was really aimed more towards children about 6-12, with lots of bright colors and simple one liners. WALL-E on the other hand, as with most Pixar\Disney movies, was packed full of adult overtones, that came off completely different to the kids in the audience.

Something that I forgot to rave about: the technical prowess of Pixar. I'm not a 3D modeler, I do some texturing, but I have friends who model and animate and from picking their brains I can normally dissect animated movies. Pixar was at their top game with Wall-E. It's amazing that a movie with such technical skill (a benchmark for sure) has such phenomenal characters and story. Sadly it's often either/or.

Oh, and the end credits were awesome. I've never seen a moving progression of art history.

Definitely in the running for my personal "Best movie of the year", that's for sure. Beautiful story, and the risk they took by having like two dozen lines in the entire movie paid off amazingly.

No surprise Pixar are Apple fans - Jobs helped start it. Loved the 2001 references everywhere, too...

WALL-E sure looks a bit of a rip off of Johnny5 from Short Circuit:

  42. #42
reki, even if it was a conscious "homage", does it really matter? The fact that Pixar and the films they make are vastly superior to Short Circuit and it's tacky, heartwarming ET apery says that they don't need to steal ideas. They apparently have them dribbling out of their ears.

Essentially though I think what you mean is "they both have eyes for a head and some tracks. OMG!".

No, that's not what I mean. I mean that they actually look like very similar designs. Having just googled the thought after posting it, it seems that I'm not the only one who thinks so. In fact, the designer of WALL-E has been asked a million times himself that question, it seems. He says the design was based on the Pixar lamp and a pair of binoculars, but that he could have also been influenced by Johnny5 on some sub-conscious level.

No, it doesn't "really matter", Mr Overly Defensive Pixar Fanboy I'm just making an (apparently obvious) observation.

  44. #44
Eh. I haven't seen Wall-E. I've seen a brief technical trailer in a theater that blew my ears off, so it didn't leave that great an impression either. I just think people jump on things as "rip offs" too often, based only on resemblance, regardless of the fact that most of the time there is absolutely no need to rip something off, unlike in the case of (for example) the developer who stole Oblivion resources, which saved him a lot of money and might have made him successful, in his dreams.

Edit for your edit* And even less so of Pixar in general.

I just assumed it was a similar concept, maybe with some subconscious influence. The treads work for overall mobility, Wall-E was going to need reasonably dextrous hands without going overboard for a trash-working 'bot, and he needed to have very obvious "eyes" for the audience to connect with.

Go over to the older design of Johnny5, who had basically the same set of requirements. Reasonably capable hands, eyes that the audience can connect with, and generally good overall mobility.

It's not surprising that Pixar hit on a similar set of characteristics. A robot, however physical or CGI, still has a few tasks it needs to be capable of.

What's really mind-boggling is how they put EVE together out of basically an egg shape, two glowing blue eyes, and hovering "detached" limbs. And one of them turns into a gun. That Apple-inspired (I read that was directly inspired by Apple gizmos) design is much further out of left field. What's ironic is that the influence is more obviously stated for EVE than Wall-E.

the start up sound for wall-E was obvious enough
there was no need to expound it even further
it was a very cute and thoughtful movie
not as funny as i thought it would be
but i was jovial and touching enough for me to love it

    Such a good movie.

I saw 4 movies this weekend.

Hancock (I enjoyed it, but it's all over the map, the critics are certainly right about it, worth a rent though, EPIC scale really).
Incredible Hulk (some spectacular action scenes, no where near as fun as Iron Man)
Wanted (wow, surprisingly awesome, second best movie I saw this weekend).
    Wall-E (I cried, a couple of times).

This was Linnae and Kaylee's first time out to the movie theatre. Kaylee (2.5 years old) was clapping in glee during large parts of the movie. Linnae, (4.5) was horribly scared by the spaceship landing (which she's seen and freaked out about a dozen times in the trailer), and seriously traumatized when Wall-e got dumped

    Spoiler

    .

Linnae gets really into TV shows, and it's the audio that mostly freaks her out.

I might just have to buy this

What I found spectacular about the film is that they pulled off a lot of optimism in a film with apocalyptic themes, which isn't terribly common. I also loved the short animated film that came with the movie package. They don't make cartoons like that anymore.

the last good cgi film i watched was the invincibles, which was very good.
