First was most likely the idea of having a modular corvette chassis that could be retrofitted to different tasks, and serve as light transports (like the unarmed Ambassador version), workers, and weapons platforms. Then a few of those chassis were built and stored aboard the Mothership and Scaffold. The Porter was first conveived as a deep space cargo tug, then retrofitted with whatever magictech they use to make them actual capture vettes, then the repair corvette as mobile refueling point for exploratory craft, and later the Hammer was developed with anti-strike turrets in place. Because they already had the necessary spare parts lying around, they could churn out heavy vettes and later multiguns as the need arises.

Salvette. It's mentioned in the manual, that there was a salvage corvette, that was redesigned before mothership's launch. It was built to support the construction.
The question is - Salvette uses Heavy corvette chasis. So why do they need to research Heavy CRV update/corvette chasis?

But if we fit the Taiidani in there... they start with a specialized chassis... move on to another one-off, then have template design afterward (heavy, Multi, Minelayer). The Repair corvette is another one-off, not supposed to be related to any design in particular.

Yes, as that ship was developed before the launch aswell.
That fits with relic's old script, that the Taiidani were meant to be the Exiles.

And this is where we're scratching our paint on the guard rail of the thread as we're slowly falling danger of veering off topic and turning into a pure fluff discussion. So, let's not do that, and stay on the art and design side of things.

    Um. Okay. Hm.
    *re-calibrates himself*
I was thinking about adding more details just by myself. Such as mentioned corvette guns, or just aditional navlights (around the magnetic arms - orange warning lights or something).

I might have bigger plans for this fighter... though I'm still wrestling with perspective issues :\

    Any help?

Well, the left wing's a bit too short. And the fin is a bit 'rotated' to the left.

yeah, perspective is way off. did a quick edit using the cockpit's front edge as an indicator. I only used two lines as a "grid", so it's not perfect, didn't touch resolution, etc, so it's a bit off. The front nose is also slightly off

Still looks a bit twisted, but not that bad for 20min.

if you ever have to deal with drwing a spaceship
the first thing you would ever do is lay down a perspective grid
it is very helpful and gives the drawing
a better polished look if you use it well enough
using 3 different points is highly suggested
however, stick with 2 focal points
if you feel overwhelmed by the lines

I stink at drawing stuff completely. =p Know of any spaceship drawing tutorials I could find online to draw Homeworld ships? I get bored during study hall at school. XD

As The Fuel pod mentioned, sketch a light perspective grid, or at least two lines, one going to infinity/horizon point and another one perpendicular to it, not on the paper plane, but for the perspective angle you want to scribble at.

Um...Vaygr? Have you played Homeworld 2?

Hiroshi- it looks like the light source right off the cockpit pod is really close to the ship (which is where you're getting your illumination). At first glance I thought it was muzzle flash from something... is it another exploding ship?

Ammon: Ahhh!! You cut off the ventral fin! How is it going to pitch in atmosphere without a vertical stabilizer?

...which...oddly enough... was one of the edits that other modeler did when he hacked up my concept :\ Just be honest, does this fighter design suck?

  24. The Studio Senior Member Dawn of War Senior Member  #74
it's just me making a goof up
i was lazy and didn't want to draw a detailed explosion
so it's just a far off space glow
i'm not happy with it at all
i didn't even bother signing the damn thing

No. It's cool. I was thinking about modelling it (with the fin of course).
Looks for me like a new generation of Hiig scout. Also, if the fin was retractable - during space combat to keep the ship low size (as it's flat - hard target from behind)
Hiroshi - It looks like laser corvette (though a bit thinner). And it looks good. Really... no details needed here... *writes down: lighting/perspective DOES matter*

And Oligarch - I think that ',' is because he's saying something 'to' ladies.

As I envisioned it to the PDS team- the FX-21 was a then-experimental fighter designed to replace the then-production interceptor (which was classed as F-15 or something). It was designed for use in both atmosphere and space... and could traverse between them without assistance.

If Implemented in my fiction it would have been turned into a fighter-bomber. It's somewhat larger than the interceptors in-game, but has something like four payload bays for ordinance. The larger kinetic cannons are sized somewhere between the assault frigate and corvette. They would operate in squadrons of 2 or 3.

Norse, you don't need a vertical fin for atmosphereic flight abilities. I.e. B2 and plenty of other planes i can't think of right now. If you do insist on having vertical fins, putting them at the wings may be an option, making the wing tips like this : "T"

Seriously, does the design suck? Every time someone else considers it, they change something fundamental about the design.

Yes, I insist on that big fin. I happen to like it the way it was. While I can agree with some redesigns of my work, this poor fighter's been abused badly by everyone else whose laid hands on her. Why not just tell me the design's junk instead of changing it?

it's not "junk", its alright, just that the big fin sticks out too much. The shape is too geometric, and if the fin is as thick as i think it is, it's not going to be of much use in an atmosphere. A vertical fin, for atmospheric use, has to be thin. It's just better without the fin imo.

Ammon has it about right here.
From a design standpoint, the vertical "fin" (it's really more of a pyramid) completely dominates the shape, as if the rest of the unit was built around this one piece. That piece seems to have no practical use, since it doesn't look like what we're used from stabilizer fins, couldn't produce lift, is an odd shape to carry a payload of weapons.
Add to that the size of the ship, based on the cockpit shape, you get a 20+ meter high fin that's not fin-shaped that doesn't tell me what it is, is not a particularly interesting shape, and draws the eye to it. That's not good design.

There's already some choices I can't get behind (why the asymmetrical cockpit layout, why the uncharacteristic asymmetric stripe layout, why so bloody huge?) but none of them really hurt the design, but trust me, the rear kills it.

I guess I'll rethink the fin or just junk the design...

As for the asymetrical cockpit? Ask the Hiigarans- they started the trend.

The stripe pattern is borrowed from the texture patterns of interceptors in the Homeworld 2 alpha. I thought they looked much cooler than the final stipes we were stuck with.

higgy inty's cockpit is asymmetrical riess. as is the stripe design, unless it was from an earlier texture. at least if i remember correctly.

Cutting the pyramid/fin down to scale and adding a single vertical fin (supposedly...) would make it look like the following. Which in itself isn't very good and has too many sharp angles in contrast to the rest of the ship but it's a path in the right direction.

I was actually going to narrow the fin and reduce it's bulk... not chop it up and stipple it as you suggest.

The Progenitor combat drones also have useless extensions which also dominate the shape. Granted, they aren't as bulky as the Spade's are, but they still don't seem to show any practical purpose.

The Spade's fin would have served as an electronics package, high-gain antenna, and extended thruster package in addition to being a vertical stabilizer.

Well, they are animated, and they seem to be part of the engine control, a bit like thrust-vectoring on the latest generation of fighters. They are quite distinct, and they are complex animated shapes, but they don't seem to dominate the whole design.

By "Spade", I assume you mean a shovel-like thing, and shovels don't have half an Egyptian monolith on them.

Ammon's idea works worse for me, try taking post #81's pic and curving the fin back, or even just halving the height to keep curves out of the design.

I like Kapyrna's design. A lot. It could serve the same purposes that Norse wants, and yet not be so pronounced. It almost looks shark-like. =3

By "Spade" I meant the playing-card symbol, to which the FX-21 shares a vague profile from the top.

I'm wondering if I should just consider the fighter a leftover bad idea from my PDS days. I liked it the way it was, and everyone insists on altering the design.

    Here's a profile with a thinner fin:

It was going to be the centerpiece of a 'heritage flight' pic with all the Hiigaran main fighters from the past 100 years. But if the design goes, so does this work pretty much.

    Thanks for the feedback guys.

  42. Forum Subscriber  #92
Ah, spades from cards, that makes more sense. The rear view you have in your sketches show the right proportion for a fin, the isometric view seems just way too tall to me. If you really like it the way it is, then by all means don't modify it. Our feedback is based on our own perceptions, which is bound to be different than your own.

I've been struggling with the dimensions of that back fin for quite a while... and it's varied in width. I'd still like it to be there, but more in line with the 3-way view I posted above instead of what the earlier iso seemed to suggest.

I have issues with perspective from time to time. Though it would be helpful to have a 3D model to look at for such things... I don't have any 3D skills :\

If the orange below it is the taiidani light corvette, well, then it's quite big. Needs more corvette influences, or make it smaller, also, the cockpit seems quite small for a 'vette.

In this case, the big pyramidical wing seems a) lazy, b) dominates the rear part of the design, c) has no apparent analogue in earlier hiigaran/kushan design d) the whole design is too geometric.

d is visible in your own last image. The inty is quite flat, but the jagged sides counteract the flat surfaces. The acolyte is completely different, but again, it's quite complex and has lots of edges and shapes thrown around. Contrasting is your design.

You may hate me by now, but your ship is so malleable that iy's changeable into dozens of different designs. One of them, and another

edit: Tried a quick model and i came to a problem: i could make the basic shape in 5 minutes. Which in-turn means that the basic design is too simple. you can add tons of detail later, sure, but the basic shape is a concave 9-sided cylinder with less than 5 minutes work to get the basic shape.

    That's because it isn't a light corvette.

It's the Taiidan Warthog someone came up with:

The "Type 38", a sort of Taiidan counterpart to the Spade.

Ammon- No offense taken. Inspiring new designs is a plus, too.

I guess I can recall making this simple shape and deciding to work with it... maybe I was out to impress the PDS team or something.

Still, I liked it. To me it harkened to the 'UFO' feeling the Kushan fleet seemed to inspire in the first game (The Carrier especially). I can imagine seeing a flight of these in silver over Roswell, NM, making a scare.

I know it isn't really Hiigaran looking... but the mothership aside, can one draw parallels between the Kushan fleet and the Hiigaran one?

I see. I always figured the Warthog would be smaller in size than a corvette, but it's obviously open to interpretation.

Eh... I suppose it should be smaller than how I drew it scale-wise on that sketch... maybe the same size as my bigger fighter *shrug*

Either way I thought it was cool enough to consider canon... unless Relic says otherwise?

Yeah, it's a RobC design, that's as close as anything not from the games will ever get to canon. And he said it was okay to use his casual designs in fan projects. So sure.
