Public Homeworld Hamachi Server

Hi all a few months ago sierra authorized WON to kill several old games online game hosting so I have decided to take the precaution of setting up an Hamachi server for all of to play on. you may use any game of the HW Saga on it. So here is the server info

I have a feeling that Relic Online will be used to host the Homeworld series now that the IP has switched. But that's hopeful optimism.

Just to let everyone know, I've just tried two games with different people using this and it works very well.

For the uninitiated, it is basically creating a Virtual Private Network which allows you to "trick" Homeworld into thinking you are playing on your local LAN network rather than the internet. Using this method, you are no-longer relying on WON to be up and running for you to play online with other people.

A basic step by step guide:

1) Install Hamachi (A simple procedure).
2) Do Hamachi's little tutorial to get you going.
3) Join the "Homeworld Server Saga" network.
4) Open Homeworld and click Multiplayer then LAN.
5) Make sure TCP/IP is ticked.
6) Connect.

Performance seems good from my experience. I welcome more people to try it, but you will probably have to tell the other players when you are going to play because there are not many people using Hamachi to play online at present.

@scottismo: Did you create Homeworld Server Saga? Because if you did it's down. I think that whenever the network creator leaves the network it destroys the network and kicks everyone else out of it (whoa, lots of network).

It seems whenever we want to set up a game of Homeworld we'll have to create a brand new network to help host it.

EDIT: Errr... never mind, I needed to enter a password; duh me!

As Orca said, he set it up. It is my understanding that the network stays until the owner leaves the group. By leave, I don't mean disconnecting but actually removing his membership from the network, but I'm new to hamachi so I could be wrong!

I tried it just now and it worked alright.

nice to see this is becoming popular again. With cataclysm their are no boxes for choosing what kind of lan network so just log in and don't worry I have not seen HW2's lan menu so can someone enlighten us as to how its set up?

EDIT: when this network reaches 16 users PM me and will will create another network as I can not afford a premium account for hamachi and they set a max person limit per network limit at 16

And please can some mod sticky this so it doesn't get lost in the clutter?

The premium account costs 40 dollars per year. If enough people are interested and everyone donates a buck or two I'm sure the community could buy a license.

Alternatively you can just create a couple of servers (Saga 1, Saga 2 and so forth) and have people hop to the next one if the first one is full.

its better to be in a lobby with random players, not where u have to call up people to have a game, no fun in that and i dont want to pay to play, so do something else ...

Kimera payment is not in anyway mandatory. a nice little donation towards upping the capacity of the server and I am by no means forcing it upon anyone. any little but helps I'd even accept a penny. and Thank you Hiroshi for the donation and thank you to the Staff member who finally stickied this.

i thought it was just another maintenace issue as of the "sending login info" msgs, it was the case in previous occassions, it should say "server down" if it were really down. Most off the rooms there are gone its becoming a ghost lobby slowly but surely

not many people here have an interest in playing HW
but it's nice to have
many a times when i was itching to play HW, won was down
and if we decide to have any tourneys
this will be up when won might not

i have my reasons for donating
you don't have to,
but i think its worth keeping this option open

problem is alot of people join a server but never there, they join a server but dont leave the network just goes offline and i told u to kick @$$ ban them!!!!

in server 2 there are 19 peeps but only 3 active almost everyday

like i said they taking up SPACE

ever heard of time zones? and you can only ban people if your an admin with a premium account otherwise you can only kick them out and they will come back

no. im just talking about the normal servers.. but i cant connect to the ones u set up eather, but thats probly cuz their full. let me know if u know any thing about the normal servers.. im tired of getting stomped in hw2 team battles. =(

Yeah so is there like one single player that hasn't been playing this game for like years and stuff? I think I've played the Homeworld pros quite enough. Is there someone that's more of a proper match? I mean anyone at all?
