Uhm, Geschutzwagen is Wehrmacht, Marder is PE. That's the difference (you can tell because of the skin)
Geschutzwagen is likely to replace the StuG. Possibly the Pak38, but I doubt it for balance reasons. No official word. The Hotchkiss, what it will replace for the PE, I have no idea.

BTW: Axis Howitzer (probably not multiplayer, screen is from causeway campaign)

    Axis howitzer is sweet

Stukas for PE is great ! Maybe more PE players will stay and fight vs Brits instead of dropping and leaving me to fight a lost battle.

But none of these new units will appear in auto-match right ?

Think existing players who just play auto-match are going to be pretty much unaffected if they choose to buy this or not...?

  3. #1353
Something interesting that I'm noticing with the Hotchkiss's Stuka upgrade. Normally, the Hotchkiss available is the H35 model, which has a shortbarrel, low velocity 37mm gun.

Now, the ones with the stuka rocket upgrade have the longer, high velocity gun barrel, I've noticed. That was a feature of the Hotchkiss' 1939 model, or H39. I wonder if that comes with the rockets?

  4. #1354
The Hotchkiss, what it will replace for the PE, I have no idea.
    I'd guess the armoured car...

Also, I've tested (using a mod) the effects of a unit with 636 hitpoints in Bren Carrier armour. As to it's super-health, it's unlikely to be upgradable to MMG, as that would be totally OP. So you basically get a super-Halftrack, with a Bren Carrier's main gun. It's not very good. It does die to small arms, but about 3x as slow as a normal Bren Carrier. So while it's quite hard to kill, it's not impossible, and it really does not hurt much. Bren Carrier main gun? Jokes. Not much to worry about.
It will finally give the British an effective early counter to pio/bike spam however... Take a kanga, garrison an infantry section and viola, you've got a tough roving bike killer...

Found something rather interesting...doesn't seem like anyone's spotted this so...

    http://community.companyofheroesgame...causeway01.jpg

An emplaced German 10.5cm leFH 18M...the standard light field howitzer of the Heer and Waffen SS. Apparently a shot from the Causeway campaign.

Perhaps Wehrmacht players will have the opportunity to wield long range artillery as American Infantry Doctrine players can? Ah, one can always hope and dream....

It's likely a SP only unit. They stated [cant remember where] that there would be 8 sidegrade units here. We've seen the PWNborne to remember.

In the back of my mind.
I'm pretty sure the Geschutzwagen is for the Wehr, and will probably replace the StuG, being that it does have a camo skin, an MG42, and is manned by the standard Wehr Vehicle Crew (Grenadiers). The Hotchkiss will be a little more interestng, and i too am curious as to what it'll replace, it seems like it'd be too good to replace the Sdkfz.222, so i'm leaning towards it replacing the PzIV Ausf F1.

What's really getting me excited is the Ram carrier and the singleplayer specific units and what possibilities they might introduce for mods, especially since many mods have been yearning for a german howiziter, and the new emplacements shown in that screen that Mirage put up look quite interesting, especially the funny looking one in the background, it's not a trench and i think i can see an AT gun or something in there... ideas?

The one in the background looks like a trench to me Lethal.

yeah those are just two trenches.

my money's on this just being the brit 25pdr/trench commandeered by germans for the campaign.

would be awesoem fi wehrmacht got a long range 25pdr. but i doubt thats gonna happen.

  10. #1360
Morning, are all vehicles in this next update getting 'crews'?
Or is this just part of the German campaign with the King Tiger?
    Thanks

Well don't think the light artillery will make it's way into multiplayer, although it would be nice.

@Panzer Jager: Actually, remember that the geschutzwagen also has an MG :P So not quite like a marder.

Still wonder what the hell the schwimmwagens are meant to do..

@grahamwookie: Not right away at least, though i imagine there is a chance it might happen if it goes well enough in tank wars and such and they actually have the time to implement it.

Hmm, although nice for that lefH18, I think it doesn't really look like a lefH18, but more a modified British 25pdr I think it could be a singleplayer thing only and probably a vehcile state for the 25pdr, not a new model.

  13. #1363

well it is a slightly different model. What's most obvious is the shape of the sandbags around the howitzer - it's arranged in a pentagon. The brit 25pdr has them arranged in a circle.

I'd kill for this - but I doubt it will be a standard weapon.

I think they could go ahead add this. The only balance changes it will bring about are positive. In almost any situation where you can get within range, the Stuka will be superior. But the howitzer will be useful in a few maps where allied arty just totally outranges stukas and makes em useless - e.g. noob maps like Scheldt which none of the good players play because of the massive imbalances and the campy-nature of the gameplay. So giving axis some sort of long range immobile arty will kinda make it a bit interesting even on those very campy maps, without really affecting balance. It would also make for more fun gameplay.

    From the COH site

"The game also includes new units that players will be able to use in multiplayer games. We'll have more information about the game featured here on our community site in the months ahead. Company of Heroes: Tales of Valor will be released in 2009."

nice find grimgork...havent seen those screens yet
so we can definately say now that the hotchkiss will get the stuka-upgrade but those rockets look much smaller than the ones the stuka zu fuß has got.
And british pioneers with a flamethrower? I hope campaign only =)

@tastelikecrab: Pretty sure it' not just a modified piece of artillery as that does rather look like a Light field howitzer to me, and the emplacement is also pretty different from the british one, besides being in a pentagon, it's got barbed wire and a small first aid station.

Wouldn't mind seeing one in multiplayer Though i think they should get the first 8 new units done first before adding in more stuff.

It's the Brit trench alright, but that's definitely not a 25 Pounder firing.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/25_Pounder

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/LeFH_18M

A careful comparison reveals that the howitzer in the screenshot has a recoil cylinder over the gun barrel which was not a feature of the 25 Pounder. In additional, the carriage has split trails with recoil spades and a different gun shield and muzzle brake.

I'd love to see PE get a Wespe some day as part of a Panzerartillerie Doctrine - with the Hummel moved to that.

Imperial: Yeah i didnt mean that was the only difference. But it was the most glaringly obvious difference.

Mirage Knight: Yeah that sounds pretty cool. this gun does look "leaner". I really do hope Axis get an emplacement howie.

@ Dane: The Schwimmwagen was put in place just to freak you out and add any other piece of german engineering into the game before adding a PzIII :-p

A bit offtopic: Is this dual-kill-thing with snipers and PE halftraks intended or is it considered a bug???

I know the perfect place for it - Wehr Defensive Doctrine...and how about giving the Wehr Flak 88 that emplacement as well?

Now THAT i would like to see Even if it becomes an upgrade i have to pay more for, i would say it is definately worth it if it actually prolongs the life of a Flak 88 and it's crew. And the howitzer would fit well there as well.

well i'd say the gun looks identical to the leFH 18M. the carriage looks a bit different from that wikipedia pic, but i'd say it's fairly close to this one: http://img395.imageshack.us/img395/1092/idiotsit9.jpg

either way, i'm sure they didnt wanna bother with makin a new unique wheel model as these guns cud've been mounted on quite a few different carriages.

There's a later version of the 105mm leFH 18 that had the gun mounted on a PAK 40 carriage that had larger tires. This lowered the weight of the gun - making it easier to move - and allowed for an increased rate of fire due to better accessibility. The gun also had more pronounced baffles on the muzzle brake to lower the recoil forces being placed on the lighter carriage.

Incidentally, this version of the howitzer is the one shown in your screenshot there, TasteLikeCrab. Relic's is the earlier 105mm leFH 18M that used a heavier split trail carriage that had one of two types of tires. The gun also had a couple of different muzzle brake configurations - owing to the fact that the 18M fired a shell that used more propellant for longer range.

There were different wheel types for German artillery - spoked and pneumatic. The former was intended for horse-drawn artillery and the other for vehicle-towed artillery.

On the Schwimmwagens - IIRC they're designed to replace the ketten and the motorcycle sidecar as part of a toggled win condition - in much the same way as the Staghound will replace the Greyhound and Stuart.

From what I understand there's going to be a set up / options screen that allows certain units to be enabled for multiplayer games via a simple check box. These special units replace existing ones...for instance, the unarmed Schwimmwagen would replace the PE ketten in MP games and so on.

hopefully actually schwimm (swim), otherwise why bother adding such a mediocre unit instead of something more interesting? its like adding another type of motorcycle or a canvas-top jeep. BFD. i'd rather have new units like AT's that could be towed by certain vehicles, just as one example.

Indeed - it would be very cool if the Schwimmwagen had the ability to traverse streams as easily as normal roads and rough terrain more easily than other vehicles. The type is after all well noted for its exceptional cross country performance thanks to its 4 wheel drive system and was much sought after by reconnaissance units.

According to stats in the on-going Beta, that is basically it's only perk (they move normal speed in water.) The Wehr schwimm can also back up. But seriously, how much water is there in CoH maps? Not much. But maybe ToV will add some swamp maps (like an MP conversion of Causeway.)

The US T17 apprears to work very similar to the Stuart; it looks like a cannister shot can be seen in this image. The British Staghound would also be likely to work as an M8, as it has a .50 Machine Gun on top. The sandbags on the T17 are also it's health upgrade, like the M8 has armoured skirts. So, a Stuart with 2x health, but probably no commander. While the British get an M8 that can likely lay mines and upgrade to .50 MG. Reason to use an M8 without skirts? Little.

@Mirage Knight: Oh that, well suppose that is there, although i also know that the new units are enabled for ranked matches.

@odditory: yeah, towing artillery would be nice, plus would also give another reason for keeping halftracks around.

Regarding the schwimmwagen.. I really have no idea as to what will make it any special or interesting. Suppose we will see in time

@Panzer Jager: sure it could be a canister shot, but it could also be a regular shot the T-17 is firing :P, otherwise yeah. The british Staghound looks more ready for combat while the american T-17 has more of a recon look.

The shot is using the effect of cannister shot (tracers are spreading like from a shotgun.)
And I was trying to say the Brit Staghound seems useless (M8 without skirts) while the US T17 (Stuart with an upgrade for 2x HP) might be really great.

How do you know it's an M8 without skirts ? And we still don't know if those sandbags in the end might function as skirts, remember, the new units are supposed to be different

Heh, that screenshot's from Men of War(the field artillery towed by halfrack)?

I recall it's one of the features I love the most from that game. Sadly, I doubt Company of Heroes' engine would be able to support that without heavy tweakings to how units work.

Thats the exact reason i believe. I think they tried it in the original beta, but it caused major pathing issues.

Am I the only 1 not excited about any of the new units they are putting in MP other than maybe the Hellcat?

I would rather have different types of infantry or artillery then these lame units.

For me the fact that ToV will have added units, SP mini campaigns, more mappage, and added gameplay modes is enough for me.

While I could honestly care less about the Hotchkiss as a unit (obsolete light tank is obsolete), the fact that it's even in shows that the COH dev team has a good understanding of World War 2 and is interested in showing different aspects and components of the Wehrmacht...for example, that it wasn't equipped with just German built and engineered vehicles and weapons.

And the Kangaroo Ram? Hardly anyone knows about the vehicle and its use in WW2. Same goes for the T17 Armoured Car...the 7.5cm PaK40(Sf) auf Geschützwagen 39H...and so on.

So kudos to the dev team for wanting to show us a broader selection of the units that fought in France during the latter half of World War 2.

True that, don't think i knew of any of those units before they were shown here, so can't blame Relic for that little history lesson :P

.. would still have liked a Panzer III though..

  47. #1397
What about reskinning the Panzer IV F to the Panzer III N (first produced june 1942) which was actually in use at this point unlike the first mentioned :P The Panzer III N was in use with the Tiger I Schweren Panzer Abteilungs and in the Panzer Grenadier Divisions.

It was the last Panzer III version

Reskin? Hell no - the hull shape and size for the Panzer III (even the Ausf. N) are quite different when compared to the Panzer IV.

It was the last Panzer III version
The Panzer III wasn't in use with any Schwere Panzerabteilungs in 1944, they stopped fielding Panzer IIIs with that type of unit, and instead added 'Armoured Scouts' which were just troops in half-tracks to provide an infantry screen. The Panzer III was almost completely phased out before D-Day, with only a few Panzer and Panzergrenadier units here and there still using them (And only because the last few of their replacement Panzer IV Hs hadn't arrived yet). Not having them around is perfectly historical for the vast majority of units in the summer of 1944.

Since animating the chassis of a vehicle is most of the tricky work, and getting a turret/fixed-gun to work is supposedly child's play in comparison, this means we now have a new modding option with the Ram Kangaroo. An actual Ram tank would not be historical, as none were actually fielded, but the Sexton used the Ram as a chassis. So we can have another SP Artillery option for the British (Sexton used the 25 pdr, as opposed to the M2A1 105mm on the Priest).

While it's cool to see it ingame and all, it's also rather odd that the 7.5cm PaK40(Sf) auf Geschützwagen 39H is even ingame. While historically accurate, only 24 Hotchkiss light tanks were ever converted to take the 75mm PaK 40.

In light of the use of the Hotchkiss model by Relic and the mentioning of the Panzer III, it got me thinking about an idea: An Axis campaign set in 1940 centered around the invasion of France, with you the player commanding the panzer spearheads that were a part of the German Blitzkrieg. Your opponents naturally would be the French army and the British Expeditionary Force. Or how about an SP campaign set in North Africa for that matter...

Come on, you know you guys want that
