SOUND IMPORT HACKED!!! Step-by-step info inside

    Here go!

[list=1][*]Download this and install it. Then use it to convert your sond file to a standard WAV file. [*]Download this and put it in a folder; You'll have to do some thinking for yourself from here on. [*]Use the above program on the WAV file, with a 512 setting.[*]Download this and open the AIFR file that resulted from the last step with this. Change to the proper settings and save. [*]Copy to the proper directory, rename to *.FDA, and change scripts if neccisary![/list=1]

That's all!!! I wish I would have thought of the renaming to FDA, but hey, I found everything else at least!

I'm in the process of converting the entire HW1 soundtrack over to HW2 now.... I'll post when done!

    Rock on.:guitar:

you wouldn't happen to know how to change the fda format to aif with a converter would you? i dont know of any that can.

FDA runs in AIF if you just change the extension - thats been my experiance anyway.

If not, change the .fda to .aifr and open in winamp, write to wave, then use the wave>aif converter

As far as I know, FDA and AIFR are actually the same format... FDA I think just have certain time index pointers, but AIFR are runnable in place of FDA. (obviously.)

i managed to fix it, all you ahve to do is rename the FDA to AIF and it works perfectly. I used this to mass convert the files (over 2000 from the game's speech dialogue total)

    http://www.psychology.nottingham.ac....cr1/ezxtn.html

just drag the folder or files into the program window and it will automatically convert the files with only the specified extensions.

or you could just use my big extractor and it renames them for you....

    Thanks for the tutorial man.
    Worked right fine for me,
    but the "Audacity Sound Editor".
I used MusicMatch to get the wav file.
    Then I followed your advise.

And now I can here Charly Brown theme playing
while spanking Vaygr to hell ;-)
Things look a lot brighter that way.

btw can anyone host the mod? I could only get it compressed to 78MB but it's well worth the dl

Making custom announcements from standard HW2 voice files.

Could use a suitable .wav editor to cut and paste sections of a file, like cutting pieces from "Assault Frigate complete" and "Battlecruiser" to create "Battle Frigate complete"

cant get tis to werk, this is what I did:

    using windows-explorer copy interceptor.wav into C:\aifr_encoder directory.

in dos command prmpt change directory by issuing command
    cd C:\aifr_encoder

    Prompt shows c:\aifr_encoder> now

    issue command
    enc.exe interceptor.wav interceptor.aifr 512

Now you should not get the error message.

I'm looking for that too, It's not hard to modify the sound file with a sound editor, but, we need to edit the soundscripts files, which are cripted...

I have a problem as well. When I use the aifr encoder to convert the .wav to a .fda, using the command line:

    enc 04.wav 04.aifr 512

I do not get an error message, but the ouput file 04.aifr is only a few KB in size, and doesn't seem to make any noise when I try to use it in-game. Any suggestions?

does it convert it to a clicking sound? I had that and simply encoded at 1024, there might be a input size limit, how long and what's filesize of the input?

also I don't use delphys sound tool, just the enc, and rename to fda. it seems to work so far.

The input file is 43 MB. I didn't hear any clicking sounds either, and I tried usuing all the different encoding values.

I wasn't going to use Delphy's tool either, but I tried it out to see if it would fix my problem and it didn't seem to do anything.

  27. #27
I think all his tool does is change the header of the file to the HW1 format. hmm is the file variable bit rate? might need to make it constant bitrate before you wav it.

Great! It works now! I guess the .wma --> .wav conversion tool was creating wav files that enc couldn't convert. Now it works like a charm.

Now you can play HW2 with HW1 music!

the clicking is an error/difference in bitrate. Make sure they agree between what you encode the .aifr as, and what you convert/strip to using Delphy's tool. Yes, 1024 is much better quality and depth of audio range, but the game may only work well with 512. HW had mix, but Cata was almost all 512. Sounds like HW2 may prefer 512 as well :\
All Delphy's tool does is strip the file header... another one also made the proper "listing" file in the /sound/ folder for old HW & Cata and declared which tracks were for multiplayer. I'm guessing the file headers are NOT the same for .aifr/AIF and .fda so you must strip the header off, leaving behind the congruous section of the file with the actual audio data.

Do HW1, Cata, and HW2 use the same format? I tried extracting the HW1 files using penesound, but I can't hear anything in HW2.

  33. #33

yep, exact same format in the data section, as far as I know, just the headers are a bit different? Anyways... I haven't used penesound, use instead the old hw music extractor tool. it's just a commandline tool, or you drag & drop hw_music.wxd onto it and watch it go. The files come out in their native(?) originally coded bitrate, as *.aif I think. Just rename from *.aif to *.fda and technically they should work. If not, then perhaps the HW2 music files do require some sort of header. Recall that with HW1, properly making the music file involved:
    encode from .wav -> .aifr
strip headers from .aifr --> .aifx
    concatenate *.aifx ---> hw_music.wxd
edit hw_music.wxh file ... basically containing the original "headers"... to tell it which songs you wanted to play in Multi games, and what each song's bitrate was.

So the actual HW music files have no headers at all. HW knows how to play them only by using the HW_music.wxh file in conjunction. If HW2 requires headers, then any and all HW1 files would have to be written to .wav , re-encoded to .aifr again, then change filename extensions to *.fda.

I don't know anything about DOS. and i want to create a sound mod useing sound forge which i know how to use.

I need the command to convert the sound to wav and the command that changes it back.
    Thanks

    ...yep.
I had to save them all as wav files in Winamp and then encode them using Delphy's aifr encoder.

  36. #36
Mikail, Can you please tell me how you converted them into wav files and what was the command line that you used for the aifr encoder to compile them back in...Thanks

I plan on fixing the recordings of some of the gun sounds which were not made well, like the interceptor gun firing sound.

On small PC speakers and consumer surround sound systems, the interceptor gun firing sounds have to much bass in them.

I have a recording studio in my apartment so i run HW2 through a pair of $750,150 watt self powered EVENT20/20 recording montitors.

These will let me hear every sound distinctly and letting me know with sounds needs fixing.

I plan on making a secondary soundblast that would follow about 2 seconds after a capital ship explodes.

So please let me know about the sound converting because this would hold me up from creating my sound mod.

    Importing HW & Cata sounds/music into HW2

    • First, extract the ".bnk", ".vce", or ".wxd" file using a program called Penesound. Note the bitrate that Penesound reports for each ".aifr" file.
    • Install the AIF Plugin into the Winamp (preferably version 2.91) plugins directory. In the Winamp preferences menu, select Nullsoft Discwriter as the output plugin.
    • Play each ".aifr" file in Winamp. You won't hear anything, but a number of ".wav" files will have been created.
    • Next, convert the ".wav" files back into ".aifr" files using the AIFR Encoder.
The commandline should look something like this:
      Code:
      enc.exe 001_1_aifr.wav 1.aifr 512
The number at the end should correspond to the bitrate that Penesound reports for each file.
    • Finally, change each ".aifr" file's extension to ".fda", create a corresponding ".lua" script file, and place each file/script pair into the proper directory within "\Homeworld2\Data\". This will either be "\Homeworld2\Data\Sound\", "\Homeworld2\Data\Speech\", or "\Homeworld2\Data\Sfx\".

I have a problem when converting wav to fda and using them in custom maps. The track plays fine for the first time in-game, but on subsequent repeats the track is shortened significantly.

Has anyone noticed this? (Is there an .lua parameter to tell the game to play the full track continually?)

  39. #39
One problem, where do you find the ".bnk", ".vce", or ".wxd" files?

I installed the plugin for winamp 5 (there is no version 2.91) and when i open penesound ,i can't find those files.

I extracted the entire HW2.Big and searched for these files, not even the disk itself has these...so where can i download them from?

I've had the same problem. I modified EvilleJedi's RandomMusic script and use that instead. Check my sig.

My last post was regarding importing Homeworld music into Homeworld 2. To extract Homeworld 2 music, simply use Spooky's .BIG Extractor and convert the .FDA files to .AIFR using the .AIFR Encoder.

That command is to encode them back into aifr.

It must be because i placed the ENC program into the extracted sound folder and typed in that command exactly as it appears and this is the error that i get:

enc.exe is not recongnized as an internal or external command, operable program or batch file.

Now i don't know if i was supposed to type anything before the command or after it.

I need the command to convert them from fda into aifr.
