Info Company of Heroes and Opposing Fronts Error Codes - Updated 17 January 2010

Company of Heroes and Opposing Fronts Error Codes

This is a compilation of available information about error codes that may be generated when installing and/or patching Company of Heroes and Opposing Fronts. It is based on information originally supplied by Relic in this thread, suggested solutions provided by other members here (particularly ÜberJumper), our experience in providing assistance to other users, and stuff I shamelessly ripped off from other people’s sites (thanks Maniac )

This is NOT a complete list of possible error codes, and the suggested solutions provided may change over time as we get more information. Where they are available I have provided links to the official THQ Tech Support pages for the errors.

As always, any suggestions found here are to be used at your own risk. We assume no responsibility for any damage you do when attempting fixes provided by users to other users.

Error Code 10006 – Data Error (Cyclic Redundancy Check)

Problem This error is almost always caused by scratched or dirty disks which are unable to be read. On rare occasions it may be caused by incompatible CD/DVD drives, or disks which were faulty when shipped from the factory.

Suggested Solution/s Check the surface of the disk for scratches and smudges, try cleaning it with a soft clean cloth. If it is badly scratched you may need to buy a new one. If it is a new disk, try reading it in a different drive (if possible) to rule out drive problems. If it still doesn’t work you may be able to return it to the place of purchase for a replacement.

Error Code 10028 – Game Explorer Problem

Problem You have Vista and possibly installed OF over COH, possibly over a patched COH.

Suggested solution/s Make sure that the account you are installing from has Administrator privileges.

Simplest workaround – Install to a different folder.

For other possible solutions, see this thread.

    Error Code 10041

Problem A small number of people are getting an error 10041 that looks like this:
An error occurred while creating the registry key \"HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curr entVersion\GameUX \". The parent key may not exist or the user may not have permission to create keys below that key. Error code 10041:00000005 (RegCreateKeyExW returned 00000005: Access is denied)
Suggested solution/s This may be related to a particular other game being installed, but it's unclear what game that would be. For a possible solution, see this site.

Error Code 10077 – There is not enough space on the disk

Problem Self-explanatory really. Because the patching process backs up the files it is changing before writing new files, and then deletes the backups, it can require as much as 8 or 9 Gb of free disk space.

Suggested solution/s Delete some other stuff to free up at least 9Gb of space on your hard drive.

Error Code 10104 – Patching encountered unexpected installed data.

Problem This error can be caused by a number of different problems. The most common problem we have seen is hardware failure, particularly bad RAM sticks, but there have also been reports of CD/DVD drive errors causing it. It can also happen if you have changed the game files in some way, by installing a mod or a skin pack for example.

Suggested solution/s The first and simplest thing to try is to uninstall CoH completely, then reinstall without any mods or skinpacks and try to patch again. If that doesn’t work you will need to check your hardware.

This thread has information on using memtest to check your RAM.

For other possible solutions, see this thread.

One user solved their problem by removing some of their RAM, reformatting their HD and reinstalling Vista, and adding back the extra RAM. Details here.

One member reported that their problem was caused by using a German language patch on an English language version of the game. The 10104 error didn't show up until several patches later when the patch tried to update one of the files that was changed earlier. The solution was to completely uninstall and reinstall. Details here.

Information from Relic can be found here.

    Error 10148

Error Code 10148 – A file in the patcher is corrupt.

Problem This usually means that you have had a glitch in the patch download and the patch file has been corrupted.

Suggested solution/s First, simply download the patch file manually and try again. If that doesn’t work, follow the procedure detailed in the THQ Tech Support Page link below.

    10199

Error Code 10199 – Shortcut couldn't be created.

Problem This sometimes happens randomly, maybe due to disk corruption or because you're installing through a user account that doesn't have access to a required folder (either the global Start Menu folder or the Game Explorer folder).

However, it's more likely that you live in Taiwan and bought the Chinese version of OF, and you run Windows Vista. Opposing Fronts doesn't install in this configuration.

Suggested solution/s If the Taiwan/Chinese version problem does not apply to you, make sure the account you are installing the game from has Administrator privileges.

If you are from Taiwan and have the Chinese version, there is a possible workaround for this problem here.

    10201

Error Code 10201 – An internal check has failed.

Problem We have very little information on this error. One member reported getting this error message while installing CoH
An internal check has failed. Please contact THQ technical support. (Error code 10201)
Suggested solution/s The member who reported the error solved it by reinstalling Windows and updating it before installing CoH.

    10212

Error Code 10212 – Something went wrong installing a Windows Installer component.

Problem Most likely you're installing OF over your original CoH and your Windows Installer database somehow got corrupted.

Suggested solution/s At least one person has reported that reinstalling their original CoH (without uninstalling first) fixed the problem. Another person found that they could fix it by creating a new Windows administrator account on their computer and installing from that account.

If that doesn't work, try the procedure detailed in the THQ Tech Support Page link below. Warning: MAKE SURE YOU KNOW WHAT YOU'RE DOING. The cleanup utility can make a mess of your computer if you use it to uninstall things randomly. ALWAYS TRY TO REMOVE SOFTWARE VIA THE ADD/REMOVE PROGRAMS CONTROL PANEL FIRST! This is a tool of last resort.

    10216

Error Code 10216 – Our error message code is broken.

Problem This happens when either Company of Heroes is running, or the patcher couldn't find your COH install (possibly you installed from Steam, copied your installation manually to another computer, or you have a pirated version).

Suggested solution/s Shut down CoH (try using the task manager CTRL ALT DEL). If that doesn't work reinstall and patch again.

    10233

Error Code 10233 – Installation Bug. OF uninstall is broken because of a missed task in original installer and/or any patch

Problem Missing a registry entry that allows the uninstall program to function properly. Also stops you from installing standard COH as there are hidden registry keys that need to be deleted first.

Suggested solution/s Create the missing regkey manually.

Example: Using Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00
Open the registry editor (in XP, go to Start Menu, Run, regedit) (in Vista, click Start button, type regedit in the “start search” field and hit enter). Look for this entry:
    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/SOFTWARE/Microsoft/Windows/CurrentVersion/Uninstall/Company of Heroes]
    "InstallLocation"="c:/Company of Heroes"
Change InstallLocation to match your install path. Merge that into your registry and uninstall will now work as expected.

    10242

Error Code 10242 – Could not determine the Company of Heroes installation directory from the windows registry. Make sure Company of Heroes is installed correctly.

Problem There may be a faulty entry in your windows registry.

Suggested solution/s Repair the faulty entry manually.

Example: Using Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00
Open the registry editor (in XP, go to Start Menu, Run, regedit) (in Vista, click Start button, type regedit in the “start search” field and hit enter). Look for this entry:
    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/SOFTWARE/Microsoft/Windows/CurrentVersion/Uninstall/Company of Heroes]
    "InstallLocation"="c:/Company of Heroes"
Change InstallLocation to match your install path. Merge that into your registry and the patching should now work as expected.

    10258

Error Code 10258 – An error occurred while configuring essential DirectX components.

Problem We have had 2 or 3 reports of members getting this error message while installing CoH
An error occurred while configuring essential DirectX components. The install cannot continue. Please contact THQ technical support. (Error code 10258)
Suggested solution/s At this time, we don’t have any suggested solutions. If anybody has any information that may help find a solution to this, please send a PM to me or to any of the Tech Assistance mods.

    10260

Error Code 10260 – The COH MSI isn't installed.

Problem This happens when you install one of the CoH 1.x megapatches and you didn't install from the original CoH DVD (possibly you installed from Steam, copied your installation manually to another computer, or you have a pirated CoH).

Suggested solution/s Reinstall CoH, patch again.

    10267

Error Code 10267 – The RelicCOH.exe on your computer is different from what the patcher expects.

Problem Usually this means you are running the wrong patch, but it could also be caused by a bad DVD or any of the other things that cause error 10104.

Suggested solution/s Check the patch version you are installing, then download it manually and try patching again. If that doesn’t work, refer to the suggested solutions for Error Code 10104

    FakeMSI

    FakeMSI Error

Problem Some people have been having a problem where they do a system restore or their machine reboots during the CoH megapatch application, and they end up with a system that doesn't have CoH properly installed, and they can't reinstall.

This applies to people reinstalling the original CoH 1.0, NOT CoH: OF or CoH: Game of the Year edition.

The error is something like, "Another version of this product is already installed. Installation of this version cannot continue. To configure or remove this product, use add/remove program in control panel."

Suggested solution/s Refer to this post for instructions on a possible fix.
