Yes; the idea is not to put anyone to shame; just to show how far from the original you can go and still make it look T-Mat. It sort of doesn't help that I added textures already, though...But nevertheless, thats something to work out on
Nuno, you simply need to practice more, practice drawing as well.
Following up on MelvinVM's post:
A crutch that I've found very useful is to sketch whatever you're going to model on paper. Time has shown that 90% of all models I do without a sketch end up being crappy and I have to force myself to draw up a concept before going on.
While I'm fairly new to modeling, this seems to be something that always holds true. It's just so much easier to make something nice when you have a reference to go by and don't have to make up the shape as you go.

Drawing might be the problem as the only thing i draw exceptionally well is a side view, but that must be enough to have a point of reference of some sort
Side view is all I drew; that is usually sufficient for planar or radially-symmetrical ships, I think.
humm, creativity must play an important role on any drawing or model...

Speaking of which, I've been playing it awhile and have some bug reports for version 0.0.8, and some things I`d like to propose about the mod. So should I just lay 'em out here or should I PM someone? Or just wait for the next release?

Well, I've been a lurker for some time now, and I really love the mod idea.
Anyhow, my opinion on the tobari.
From the turtle and gunship concepts you can see that they are a tad rough, surely sturdy craft, able to take a beating. At least that's how they look to me. So, I'm feeling that the bomber doesn't suit them. It's sleek, although aggressively looking. Maybe a slight change in the nose and cockpit area? (the design is of great quality, I just don't feel it fits the tobari enough)
About the frigate. Don't you think that the engine is too elongated? It's consisted of 5 squares when looking from above. I propose the length of 3.5 squares (center square size). And those diagonal lines on the engine should be vertical. Or I'm misinterpreting the concept...
For the bug reports, should I wait for the next version or now is a good time as any?
Edit: Also, I'm running this game on a laptop, and this is the first time (playing the tobari) that I got low fps in a game... I'm thinking you made the models a little too good? Perhaps using textures for small dents and the like, will keep the models like the hiigaran or vaygr ones poly-wise.
Edit 2: The turtle design... Shouldn't it be taller? Check the angle on the front of the wings. It appears that the whole ship is encased in armor plating (hence turtle). I would presume that the bottom of the ship is similar to the top, not flat as the model. Also notice the two fins on the top side...
And I think the tobari frigate should be less squared, but more round around the edges. Is that possible?
One last remark and I promise I'll wait for a response before posting anything else. I was looking through the screenshots of the mod at mod DB and saw the tobari textured green with yellow stripes. Shouldn't those stripes be red as in the tobari frigate concept art?

if those REAL MODS are MINI-MODS, then redefined rules for HW2, kadeshi mini-mod, and others are nano-mini-micro-tiny mods....
Complex by itself uses a redesigned UI, lots of "off-vanilla hw2" options, crew etc etc...
FX is a redesigned homeworld 2, experimenting various types of gameplay "commander" and "empire"...
A mini-mod is, by simple terms, a small modification to the game... (adding few ships or editing weapons, new rules...)
A MOD is a complete and complex changing of the game engine, in order to enjoy our favorite games (i cant play vanilla hw2 because of boredom ^^)

I had a discussion with Chris on this and after a lot of changes and suggestions we ended up in a "cut in half" version. I still believe that this one was closer to the concpet,,,in terms of height at least.

Wait my bad, im not sure if im saying this right, I meant that if the mod was able to add pre-existing elements (namely model's/various fx/gui) from full epic awesome take years to make mods such as FX Commanders 1.85 and Complex 7.4.4, and other small, made in a couple of months, mini-mods, (infact the kadeshi mini-mod is a good example because I think it has a higher quality skin as far as I can remember, but I was meaning mainly one new/updated ship mini-mod, however nowadays those mods seemed to have all but vanished like Bentusi : The Last Return) then, you would have a mod that would surpass anything before it, and "in my own uneducated opinion", say this mod got to version 5.6 or something, it would be at a class at or above what the community expects homeworld 3 to be.
To clear things up and to be more specific, I was thinking of the old saying "you don’t need to re-invent the wheel" so say for example you wanted to create a custom harvester for the progenitors, you don’t need to spend time making one where there is already one made (namely the bee from fx), and with permission you could port it over, the same applies to fx commanders, complex (and a couple of others) if your looking to pad-out races with those missing ships, before you go and design new units, you don’t need to do it if its already been done, and if you look at those mods and pick the best bits from all of them, (be it game play, maps, ships, interface ect) you’ll find you can update accordingly, because there is always room for improvement.
Sorry I was just meaning to agree with chris80502’s idea lol, im aware of the terms mod and mini-mod.

Well, as it is this mod already implements as many units from other mods as it generally needs to, or can. It draws on HW@ materials, for instance. If I ever get my act together it'll be using ships from my Galactic Council mod. But for those units which simply don't exist anywhere else (namely esp. the Tobari units), HWU will design and create its own units to fill the void.

Anyways been a while since ive posted around here although discussion and progress seems to be moving somewhat.
A quick question, has anyone been able to get a hold of Chris80502? i have attempted e-mails and PM's as well as several other sites i have known him to be on and still yet nothing after about 2 months.
Im not completely sure myself, but chris is very busy right now, he'll be away for a while, but he'll come back, for now, lets concentrate on what we are working on, as we have no leader, and no person actually capable of keeping everything at hand, our best bet is to just work on what we were doing and then discuss new things later on.
I'm pretty much away from all the Criidaar files, they're on hold for now, but as I'm not happy with the current designs, they will be getting a complete redesign.
I am currently accepting suggestions, inspiration or concepts if anyone wants to send, just PM me.
Inspiration is everywhere; you'd be surprised what you can use to come up with at the very least decent looking ships. I, for instance, began my designs for Czalkir ships based on the inspiration of tape dispensers-- a fact I never tire of reminding people about. Work in progress, don't get me wrong, Criidaar is simply in the garage right now for a total redesign.
base texture for now, but there will be some more grey, but for the main part the Criidaar will be yellow and their traditional blue stripes, however there will be some big teamcolor spots.
real life is hard but i managed to get some time for my Criidaar, while the interceptor is fairly identical to its previous design, the capitals will be far, far different.

These updates are looking good! Looks as though you are gaining the necessary understanding of texturing; I can see some of the fundamental techniques peaking through. This is my one problem with the new material, though:

After closer inspection of the vaygr and hiigaran craft, I hereby denounce my previous statement that the models for the tobari have been made poly-heavy.

I'm reminding talented artists, that there are a few unused concepts from relic which are rather cool looking. The blue kadeshi looking side-engine frigate and the frigate escorted by two corvettes. Perhaps whole fleets could be developed from those concepts. Just an idea...
it looks Really good Melvin but still needs a lot more detail, some metal plates, joints maybe some small vents... take a good look at some original relic textures to get ideas.

sorry for vanishing but been having problems at this house etc. Anyways im just about done with the races i been working on in the process of adding hardpoints etc and since i dont know how to add them as a race im stuck with adding them into the campaign itself. So if anyone was like to try them out and give me some feed back that will be great, so just give me a reply either on here or on Xfire and ill hook you up. New beast vs old beast, New somtaaw vs old somtaaw, aka New strain and Bounty hunters from durandels onslaught mod. ALso im looking for someone who can convert or make custom sounds for the various ships etc. Was wanting to give the beast and somtaaw their voices from cata so if anyone can do that and would like to help out that would be great.

Put the ship folders into your ship folder and the weapon and script ones in your data folder. Put the persist 2 file in your ascension folder. You will find that in your HW 2/Bin/profile/profile1, etc/Campaign/Ascension folder. Launch the HWU mod and play mission 2. Enjoy
ALso credit to durandel for his edits on the hw cata ships and to matt for making the custom weapons i asked for. Its better than nothing but still got stuff to fix of course so bare with me. Anyways feed backs etc tk you. OH and with this if you are worried about your hw 2 install back it up till someone helps to get the stuff working as a playable race I have no experience with that. ALmost forgot one last thing credit for the infected exchange goes to bloodfleet.

I love the new ships!, ive been fiddleing with them trough all the single player campaing lol, however they dont seem to want to load on mission 5. cant wait for them to be added to the races. the kadesh will soooooooooo pwn
thats an infected kadeshi ms athoough it my not look like it, its for a different varation of beast. Also i can make it so you can play with kushan turanic somtaaw etc throughout the campaign, you will get their ships and you can build them as well if you want. Also about the crashing issuses i havent had that problem so it may be just you bro but then again who knows.
I figured it out, the crash is caused by the subverted ghost ship building things, mission 5 crashes because of the radiation i think. all other missions go ok
another thing i noticed, in the new ships theres the folders Hgn_BH_Sentinel, Hgn_NS_Sentinel, Hgn_BH_Leech, Hgn_BH_Hivefrigate, but i didnt see them in formation. unless your using these classes for another ship, or i messed up the persist file
i didnt put the ships in the persist file for you to play around with yet cause i dont have any weapons etc for them which will be done soon. THe ghost ships is a BC class vessel so that ability to build ships will be removed and subsystems added. I added a triple missile launcher to the BH and NS hivefrigates cause thats the weapons that durandel had for them.

ah right, i must say great work so far, i wish i was as skilled as you, i tryed downloading the HWU tools and i ended up making a mess of things .HOD's are far more complex than i expected, on the topic of hive/drone frigates, i myself was thinking about ways the hive frigates could regain there origonal function, i know in cata the colony ships got infected with the beast and then the people got converted to bio-warheads, so the missiles should suit that colony hive fine, however with the cata hive frigate and kushan drone frigate, as we wont be able to script the same function, a way round it could be to have drones as a "ship" that only the cata hive frigate can make, make them have some small cost and recharge time, and have a pre-built drone controller module added to the frigates that adds like +24 cap or whatever to the number of drones. that would mean only the hive frigates can make and maintain the drones, and once the frigate is destroyed, the drones would still be alive but the cap would be used until the drones are gone (so if you had 12 drones still alive, you could only build 12 if you had ONE drone frigate) obviously if you had say 3 hive frigates you could have a max of 72. the downside is you would have to macro building the drones, and you would have to balance it as always, but it has been done to some degree/has been panned on complex/rearm ect

Has anyone been working on the progenitors?, i started tinkering with them, and I got permission from JMScomp and mololu to use specific parts from Crossfire and Path to victory to put in HWU.

i would opt for mololu's progenitor ships. Since they fully detail what the keepers should be like. It's just a matter of donating material.

I really love his phase shields, they really look awesome, and could be a great addition to our mod), i got the phase working and ive started re-skining those epic ships (appart from the hunter i promiced not to touch), i used crossfire for the resource collector/ refinary as it imho works/looks better, im debateing if i should add phase to the other origonal ships (like the destroyer) or keep them how they where. im in the process of turning the Path to victory's resourcecontroller into a bombardment frigate.

i made some changes since last but i havent done much with the stuff as of yet, added pds guns to guns that were missing them ex taiidan carrier, NS mothership, just like the kadeshi ms had the guns on the spiral.
