Alarm Dawn of War 2 Balance Discussions - Guildines Updated, Please Read!

What is the purpose of this section?

To discuss the balance of the various ingame factions in a reasonable and civil manner, while making reasonable attempt to substantiate your position. What this means is that I don't want to see people coming in and trolling threads with 'well they're broken because I SAY SO!' remarks. Discuss your opinions and provide a reasoning for your position guys, and things will go a lot smoother. Be prepared to be wrong on occasion, since sometimes you just will be. We're all on the same side here at the end of the day, and everyone is trying to discuss what would make the game better for everyone, so running around shouting at eachother is not only completely pointless, but is also something we're not going to tolerate around here.

Balance sections have a history of being full of heated debate. Everyone is passionate about their chosen units or races or whatever. Passion is fine, but bear in mind that it isn't an excuse to act like an asshole.

As always, the Dawn of War 2 section rules are in full effect, and in the balance sections case, we're absolutely not going to tolerate any mucking around. Take a look at the balance section rules in this thread to make sure your threads and posts are up to par.

Keep it clean and civil, and everything will be cool. Fail to do so, and then we're going to start having problems.

    Cheers guys.

    DoW2 Balance Section Guidelines

Much thanks and adoration goes to Slow Runner for helping out with these.

    1. Behave like an adult - Pointless bickering and trolling will be deleted and will earn you a vacation from the the thread and possibly the balance section. Stay on topic, and don't take balance discussions personally. There are much more important things in your life to get worked up about.

    2. Don't post on a whim. - If you lose a game, don't automatically assume that it is because the opponent's race is overpowered. You might have picked the wrong strategy, made some mistake or, as incredible as it sounds, your opponent just might have been better than you. You should always try to figure out ways to counter things before crying imbalance. A thread in Strategy might help here.

    3. Be specific - This is an important one, because in the past we've had very generalized threads about balance. While threads like this one have plenty of good discussion going on in them, they can be difficult to read for someone who hasn't been following along from the beginning. Instead, make sure your topic addresses a specific balance issue rather than a slew of problems affecting an entire faction. This will make it easier to discuss and address each problem, and easier for everyone to make good use of the balance section.

    4. Post a problem and a solution - "Hai guys, how do you feel about Orks?" is not a balance issue. Neither is "Hai guys, someone in the lobby called me a grot abuser so are grots really overpowered?". "Big Shootas are OP :[" isn't a good thread either. You need a balance problem and preferably some sort of solution to go with it too. Otherwise it's just another case of venting and ranting. If something is bugging you enough to make a thread about it, the least you can do is to think about it long enough to come up with at least some kind of suggestion on how to fix it.

This is a pretty good example of a solid balance post:

Title says it all really. In a 1v1 game it is impossible to protect your gens from stikbombaz and still remain competitive with capping the field. If you just leave a dev squad or a shuriken platform he will either nade your setup team, or nade a gen, back off real quick, nade another gen, back off real quick, and then all your gens are dead. You cannot afford to leave a small army defending your gens, your just going to get outcapped. These guys need a nerf vs gens.

I suggest a nerf to their damage against gens so it takes two volleys to kill a generator, allowing time to actual get units over to fight them off. Remember, one unit guarding your generators at all times will not deter stikbombaz. They will simply kite your unit whilst throwing grenades when their cooldown is over.
    5. Use a descriptive title - Make sure the title of your thread does a good job of letting people know what kind of discussion will be going on without their having to read the first post. Including the version number you are talking about is also very helpful. Titles like "Nid Imba!" or "Eldar are broken!" don't tell the reader what they are getting into. Thread titles like "Orbital strike, is it OP when compaired to the other mega globals?" or "[1.2.1] plasma guns too good vs vehicles?" tell readers exactly what the thread is about before they even click on it.

Updating this list just a bit.

    6. Fluff is not a balance argument - The phrase "in the fluff" and its derivatives are essentially banned from this forum. Fluff is not to be used to justify balance arguments, EVER. The balance forum is here to allow people to discuss balance IN THE GAME, not to argue about their wish-list of game features or why such-and-such would never happen in the fluff.

    7. Game mods do not equate to game balance - Unless a thread is created specifically to discuss the balance in a specific mod, mods are not to be referenced in balance discussions. Yes, you may think that one specific mod has something perfectly balanced; someone else without a doubt thinks that the mod's balance is crap. This goes doubly if the mod is your own creation, since you're viewing it from a very biased perspective. Nobody cares if the mod is popular or has it's own Steam community; leave mods out of balance discussions that don't relate specifically to the mod.

    8. Back it up - Provide proof to support the fact that your balance argument is essential; this will help to show other users the reasoning behind your observation. The opening post of all balance threads is required to contain provided proof, either in the form of a replay or statistical information relating to the balance issue you wish to discuss. Without either of the two requirements, expect your thread to be locked down.

    9. Report balance trolls - Some people like to amuse themselves by trolling the balance forums and whipping everyone into a frenzy. Don't fall for it. Use the report button to report their posts and bring them to moderator attention. There may not be an immediate moderator response, but the thread WILL be checked and posts will be deleted or other action will be taken if necessary.

9.1 It's called a 'three strikes' law - Repeated trolling attempts in the balance forum may result in banning from specific threads, suspension from participating in balance discussions, or having posting privileges in the balance section removed permanently. You wouldn't push the 'three strikes' rule with Superman, and I wouldn't recommend pushing it in the DoW2 balance section either.

Rules updated to include new wording for rule 8; all balance threads now require PROOF other than "here's what I think."
