    9800 gx2 stutter/choppy screen movement

    specs:

    windows xp os
    3.0 ghz c2d processor
    680i sli mb
    9800 gx2 video card
    500gb hard drive
    4g ram
    500 wat ps

    -video card has cooling fan
    -cast itself has 3 fans+vent (front/side/back)

    problem:

in-game when I am moving the screen around (mainly up and down) the screen chops/stutters, like a line is cutting through half of it when I move it around. This doesn't cause lag at all, its just kinda annoying and I know it shouldn't be doing that.

I had this issue in world of warcraft when I first got the card and someone suggested I change a certain setting in my 3D video options.

I am only running one 9800 gx2 card. Anyone have any suggestions or know what the issue is and can help me solve it?

    Thanks!

Can you check and make sure your slot is running as PCI express 16x instead of 1x? It should be listed under your nvidia control panel lower bottom left corner system information and scroll down to the bottom of the detail box in the new dialog that pops up

Sounds like screen tearing, happens with high fps. I haven't bothered checking yet as I'm not playing much atm, but this should go away by forcing vsync trough the nvidia control panel.

Open control panel -> Manage 3D settings -> find/add dow2.exe in the list -> Scroll to the bottom, Virtical Sync = Force on. Apply and you're done.

    yeah its running as 16x

Ok I added steam.exe because thats what it came up as, I put virtical sync Force on but i'm afraid it didn't solve the problem, anyone else have any suggestions?

btw thanks for the replys/help so far much appreciated!

Check if Steam Community is enabled, if so, disable it and try again.

well I wasn't 100% sure how to disable it, but from what I was able to navigate through I went to Community --> settings --> in-game --> unchecked having steam active while in-game. But that didn't work either =/

Well i'm running windows xp sp3 with an 9800gx2 on ultra and my only technical difference with youre system is my chipset wich is an intel P35 chipset and not an sli chipset.

The problem may be indeed in youre driver configuration.

make sure you have vsync turned off as that causes lags most of the times. And check if youre video card is configured running in "single display performance mode". Perhabs this helps.

    Fixed

    If you have this issue:

    Symptom
Game stuutrers lags incredibly badly, even though you have a really good machine?

Turning on V-sync stops the stutter but you get mouse lag instead?

    Problem

Your machine is simply pumping way too pages for your CPU to handle it due to weird behaviour in the HW2 graphics engine.

You actually want to slow these pages down, which is what v-sync does, but you get horrible mouse lag.

So this solution fixes the stuuering issue so you won't need to use vsync any more.

    Solution

    1. Install and Load FRAPS (this is a frame rate monitor you can see in game)

    2. The easiest way to slow pages is down is by opening your invidia control pannel-Manage 3D Settings, click Program Settings tab, and select HomeWorld 2 from drop down list.

    3. Set the anti-aliasing setting to something which forces SLI performance mode. This automatically beefs up the quality of the image and slows down pages. Set the anti-aliasing setting to SLI 8x or SLI 16x

4.Launch HW2, check your frame rate displayed in the corner, even in the menu's you should not be peaking above 60FPS ideally. If not down below 60FPS then exit HW2 and change the graphics settings until you find something which slows down the frame rate. e.g. disable optimizations, and increase quality settings to max.

NOTE: For those of you not useing SLI there may be other ways of slowing down the frames by dropping optimizations and increasing the Quality settings, perhaps even setting processor affinity to 1. I have found however that if you have a more powerful machine, these may not be enough......
