    What Engine?

    What game engine is DoW using? IC's or HW2 (as indicated in the IGN article).

    My bet's on IC engine... modified/improved/enhanced I imagine?

    IC engine would probably be more likely, I just can't imagine an HW engine game with solid ground.

    I don't really think 'solid' ground matters realy in a game engine like homeworld's IMHO

    Not having played IC, is its 3d engine better or worse than that of homeworld 2?

    HW2 engine when in space, and IC engine when in rooms, thus DoW uses both and with improvements. nnn.....

    40k does have a space based game system, to which many people have attempted to mod the homeworld engine. However GW, the creators of 40k, are VERY particular about copyright infringement, so these have not been allowed to go ahead.

    My bet is that they'll use a heavilly tweaked and upgraded version of the IC engine, removing the cartoonish feel and replacing it with the dark gritty gothic look of 40k. However for it to work with the 40k universe we are talking a very extensive overhaul.

    Things like building wont be around, it'll be more action focussed, like say Ground control I guess. Small battlefields, big guns, and a notable absence of slow paced games should be key factors. After all, a bgame of tabletop 40k simulates about three minutes of actual action.

    I don't know if the IC engine is good enough or appropriate, as it's ment to simulate individuals more than massive hoards. After all, by the looks of things this is going to be more like groups of squads fighting each other rather than individual units. It might also get a lot bigger, having Titans and massive armies fighting eachother instead of simply just squads.

    Still, we won't know for a while until we get some screenshots.

    Errr you can have some pretty massive hordes in IC... I've seen a couple hundred units on the screen at once.

    Well I actually haven't played the game, so I guess I'll defer to you (but that's the impression I got). But still, we won't know until we see some screens. After all, Relic might have purchaced rights to an engine from another game. Point is, we'll see.

    Still if the game's in Epic scale, you'll be looking at an Imperial Guard regiment of up to 10,000 strong. So I guess the engine to be used would really depend on what scale the game is.

    If the HW2 engine can support solid ground I think I want to see it. Is there any possiblity that it is a new engine?

    I'd love to see Ground Control 2 game engine being used to make the game. That thing really is beautiful. The infantry men's faces show for real. That's detail. Too bad GC2 won't be released earlier than next year (first or second quarter) so it might be a bit late to get the engine

    How long do Relic employee's get for their hols???

    They sweated coffee for years over HW2 and now they are stuck straight into DoW?

    Have they had folk working on DoW separately for months now?

    Im thinkin Area 51 in Nevada is the place to work. Just dont get stuck out the back with the waste pits.

    Relic had Three teams while HW2 was in production. The HW2 Team, and the two NSP teams. When HW2 finished, staff from that team was split off to fill more positions on the other two teams. Some of the HW2 team was on vacation in August, some in September, some in October.

    ÜberJumper, I may have misunderstood your post but are you saying that the engine is the same what was used in the original GC? If that's the case then you are mistaken. It's brand spanking new engine, capable of doing all kinds of nifty things which the older engine could not. IGN has nice preview up with Henrik Sebring (the lead designer).

    I wonder if DoW will have cooperative multiplayer campaign. That would be neat. Beating the comp with two buddies. Just imagine, Ultramarines, Imperial Fist's and Blood Angels kicking Chaos Spacemarines' butt.

    Whoops, I guess I took your post the wrong way Sorry about that.

    Yeah, my first bet was that Relic was going to use the IC engine. Maybe upgrade it in someways to make it better suited to WH40k universe (larger unit cap, perhaps?). I wonder how adaptable IC engine really is. Never played the game so I don't know a thing about it.
    I wonder how long Relic has been working on DoW. It could take a long time for that game to see the light of day.

    The IC engine's pretty adaptable I think.

    Shame that it's first outing was filled with Animals (although I really enjoyed IC)... Probably would have had more buys if people were able to really "blow shit up" if you know what I mean.

    According to another thread, it has been in development for a year already, and had 6 months of concept work before that. As some have said it is already playable, I hope they don't hold out for too long before giving us a few teaser shots!

    Yeah, which means that by the time this game has been released, they would have been working on it for close to 2 years. This project was being done whilst all of us were busy gawking over Homeworld 2, meaning we never saw it coming until now. Trikki

    I would love to see HW2's engin being used. The ground could be added without alot of fuss.

    Altho i played IC and i hope that they have the IC engine and i hope they use that one... i especialy liked your ability to tilt the view too almost ground level and zoom in especialy close

    Your Relic stalking skills are needing some work. But then again, it's kinda hard for elephants to sneak up on people...

    Uber is right, it's been in production for just over a year, and the concepts for it were established 6 months before that, basically right as I was peeling off from IC. We're in full production right now, with our design vision firmly established. The game is fully playable, and quite fun.

    Yes, thats completely true.
    I found the game rather dull w/o the sound of machine guns cannons and Things Blowing up .

    You can see the multiplayer menus in your head already.

    The Colour scheme selection + insignia for your Space Marines/Imperial Guard/Chaos Marines Chapter.

    Would the IC engine be suited to ruined Techno-Gothic city landscapes. Kinda like Escape from New York or Kosovo 7/8 years ago.

    I hate those filthy warp daemons that claw at ships navigators; as they travel through the ether..

    they are going to need a engine that can do both open land and urban terrain as the game can be played in both, also have the capability for big and small games

    I am betting that they will use the homeworld 2 engine. To get the IC engine up to date graphics wise would probably be just as cumbersome as getting stuff like cities in the Homeworld 2 engine.

    It does, check it out at Tanis. We're trying to get it to work for the underwater mod.

    i think they would have probably taken some things from the homeworld2 and dustwars engine and put it into the ic engine (plus other modifications). they probably also used stuff from their older IC engine, cuz i remember seeing stuff from early screenshots showing that IC had huge landscapes.
