Micro Help - How to Target Units

    All,

Is there an easy way to pick out a unit you want to use an ability on? For instance, with Apoth heal, I find myself hunting for the right squad in a mess of melee. Back in WC3, you could just hotkey heal and then click on the portrait of the unit you wanted to heal (selecting several units pulled up portraits with health bars). Now, with my Apoth two ASM build, I have to pick the right squad out of the mess and click on one of the units.

Particular keystrokes, mouse click order would be greatly appreciated!

As far as I know there isn't another way, which is balls at the moment since targetting in general has such a small area that any targetting (even a unit by itself) can sometimes be a hit or miss affair.

Supposedly the new patch will be making it possible to target friendly units with abilities by using the sidebar RPG portrait. Why this wasn't included from the get-go... well that's another story.

That would be perfect! Just click heal and the squad pic. The Apoth is the only way I can stand a chance against nids and better heal targeting would make it less of a luck-based affair.

Yes, that would be great. When you have 2 ASM fighting a mass of Orks/Nids it's almost impossible to select the squad with less health. You have to just heal one and pray it's the correct squad.

You think that's bad? Try fishing out rapidly dying Banshees for buffs as Eldar.

The targetting system in Dawn of War II across the board blows. Even focus firing is unnecessarcily difficult.

    Very true Brenil.
However when you get them! muhahaha.

I watched a level 3 Banshee squad completely rip through a Nob squad with barely a scratch after I'd guided them, fortuned them and doomed the nob squad. All I got from the other player was "wtf just happened to my nobs?"

Then proceeded to do the same vs an Assault Terminator squad with a Seer Council. Oh..... how I love my buffs

I think Jaeger (?) said that this icon clicking for targeted abilities was going to be in the next patch. Thread's on the main DoW2 board, I think.

ErroniusG - There's not a lot you can do about it to be honest, just try click the units and pray you got the right one

    Reaper,

    ... what... the ... fuck?

Anyway... I think while the change is good, the targetting system still needs to be looked at. For some reason it is far more difficult in this game to manually target units than it is in any other RTS I've ever played. Perhaps the unit boxes are too small or perhaps the mouse is too direct or inaccurate. Whatever the cause, I certainly hope it is fixed sometime in the future.

You should be able to left click + drag on an enemy blob and sort through which squad you want to focus fire on with the tab key.

Sometimes there's that one pesky Slugga or Gaunt left and one can't for the life of him or her actually click on it. It's frustrating as hell.

you could always just do an attack move to the last member of said squad

Changing the camera angle to more Top-down view helps a little (alt + mouse)

Stops the pesky 'hide a platform in the bushes' 'hide a tunnel or mine behind the wall' type tricks too...
