    Basically, 1 Infantry, 1 Mechanized Infantry and 1 Armoured Company per nation. This is just to test the mechanics of equivalent companies, to give us an idea of where we are balance-wise. We'll be releasing additional companies over time once the alpha has been released in "expansion" packs.

    Will there be support platoons available, or just basic companies?

  4. #304
    Absolutely. All of the platoons and batteries I've posted to date can be taken as support by one company or another.

    When you make a force, you'll choose a company as the basis, but you'll have access to lots of support platoons and batteries to add to your force. You can choose to make a balanced force with a little bit of everything, or fore-go elements like reconnaissance, engineering, armour, infantry, or artillery if you want to focus more on something else. The core of some companies are relatively inexpensive, so it's easy to add lots of support, while others (like armoured companies) have expensive core units so you'll have to choose wisely what you spend the remaining points on.

    Support will be a common element in nearly every force, since otherwise your force will be one-dimensional and inflexible. Units at the fore-front of any battle in WWII were rarely unsupported. When they did go without support, they usually met with disaster.

    Today I'll post a sample Company, showing what the core elements are, and what optional support you can take along with it. If you have a request, drawn from the list Eliw00d posted, please let me know.

    What will you be using for Wehrmacht Artillery? the 105mm leFH18 M that Relic made? Or the 105mm leFH18/40 we are working on.

    If I can post another request, it would be nice to see a regular Grenadier company's composition and available support units. =)

    This was discussed on the last page. All artillery will be off-map. The exceptions are small or medium mortars, infantry guns and self-propelled guns such as the M4A3(105) and StuH42. It would not be realistic to have artillery in the front lines, and we will not be abstracting that. Makes it easier on the modelers, too.

    @kapulA
    That request is fine, Sturm will reveal a Grenadier-Kompanie sometime today.

    @Infidelicious
    We are working hard to make sure that all 9 companies shown above are fully outfitted. It's only a matter of time, now.

  8. #308
    One benefit of keeping artillery off the map is we can represent guns, howitzers, and launchers that the modelers will probably never get around to making. I only have to find a side image of it, convert that to a one-colour silhouette, and make buttons based off of it. The rest is just making a weapon for it with accompanying stats, and hook it all up. If we wanted to add in captured French or Soviet artillery for German usage, we could do it rather easily, without ever needing a new model. British Landmattress rocket launcher? Sure! The obscure R-Vielwachwerfer launcher that only the Waffen-SS used? Not a problem!

    Actually that's a Grenadier-Zug (Platoon), which is the building block of a Grenadier-Kompanie (Company). Companies are made of platoons, and as a Company Commander the core of your force will be from the platoons in your company, and the rest comes from platoons loaned from other companies as support for the mission.

    The Company write-ups will cover the required platoons that come from that company (ie. The Grenadier-Zug in a Grenadier-Kompanie), and the support platoons that are available. For example a Grenadier-Kompanie is part of a Grenadier-Abteilung (Battalion), so some support will come from there. That Grenadier-Abteilung is part of a Grenadier-Regiment, so some further support will come from that tier. Finally that Grenadier-Regiment is part of a Grenadier-Division, so additional support can come from that tier too. The corps which holds that division, and several others, might also have some units that can be assigned as support, and that's the highest tier we'll be representing. The available options will change from one company to the next, especially if the company is from an entirely different kind of division, like a Panzer or Panzergrenadier-Division.

    Can I get a TO&E of the various medium tank companies that are going to be in the alpha?

    I'm assuming the German one will be Panzer IVH or Panther D/G's and the American will be M4A2's/76(W)

    I'm not really familiar with British armor deployment so I'm wondering if the British company is going to have fireflies, or just M4A1's / Cromwells.

    Also, how is morale in particular going to apply to tanks? I'm guessing Training will be decreased reload time and increased accuracy.

    The American Medium Tank Company will have M4A3s, with the option to replace one platoon with all M4A3(76)W's. Also, one platoon of M4A3s can replace one of its tank sections with a section of M4A3E2 Jumbos.

    The British Armoured Squadron will have Sherman Vs (M4A4) and an optional Sherman VC Firefly. Cromwells are part of a different company type (Armoured Recce).

    There are two variants of the German mittlere Panzer-Kompanie, one with Panzer IV Ausf. H's and one with Panther Ausf. A's. You will not be able to mix them, it is simply one or the other. However, you can opt for a schwere Panzer-Zug as support.

  13. #313
    Since the RelicNews forums use a different formatting that didn't look right with the Company article, I'll just link to it rather than post it in a broken form here.

    That is a good idea, keeping it off-map. Howitzer usually fired from longer ranges than most CoH maps.
    You should try making them look like real incoming artillery, not like the current off-map artillery where the shells drop vertical.

    That is what I have been working on recently. I think you guys will like the way artillery works.

    @kapulA
    Good catch! That was a copy & paste error. These shouldn't happen anymore as we will be posting the write-ups exclusively in our forums from now on.

  19. #319
    For the Grenadier-Kompanie, I thought I'd provide a little English translation for the various units listed in it.

    Trupp = team
    Gruppe = squad or section
    Zug = platoon
    Gruppe-Führer = Headquarters Section
    Companies usually had a small section attached to the headquarters with extra weapons or specialist personnel, like the ones below:
    Panzerzerstörer = Tank Destroyer (refers to Panzerschrecks in this case)
    Scharfschütze = Sniper
    Maschinengewehr = machine-gun
    Granatwerfer = mortar
    Infanterie-Geschütz = infantry gun (ie. leIG18 75mm or sIG33 150mm)
    Panzerabwehr = Anti-tank
    Späh = Scout
    Flugabwehr = Anti-aircraft
    Beutepanzer = Looted tank
    Sturmgeschütz = Assault Gun (ie. StuG)
    Panzerjäger = Tank Hunter (ie. Marder III M)
    schwere(r) = adjective for heavy
    Werfer = Launcher
    Luftunterstützung = Air Support

    The divisional and up support blocks often have multiple choices per line. This is because some of the support choices are coming from the same source, like an Anti-Tank Battalion in the division, and that source will only provide one platoon to help your company (There's other companies in the division they have to support as well with limited resources). So in the case of the Grenadier-Kompanie, you can have an assault gun, anti-tank gun, or tank-hunter platoon from the anti-tank battalion, but not a combination of the three.

    Beutepanzer = Looted tank

    Both sides sometimes had to abandon vehicles or weapons in a hurry, often fully intact or near it. This was a very common thing on the Eastern Front, as early in the war the Germans gained a lot of ground very quickly. That is why they had so many 120mm mortars and other Russian equipment. Later in the war, the Russians gained all the spoils.

    It wasn't as common on the Western Front, as the Germans were on the defensive throughout, but on some occasions the Americans looted German tanks and vice versa.

    However, we will only be representing this on the German side as the Americans had enough of their own equipment that they didn't take looted vehicles very seriously (mostly shipping them back for testing/study/target practice).

  22. #322
    "Oi you gits, get dat Shermie workin' or Iz gonna load you in da cannon meself!"

    Beutepanzer options will only be for the most common enemy tanks, which with American and British allies means 75mm-armed Shermans. Sometimes the Germans had to capture two or more just to get one working tank, since the ammunition, fuel, and spare parts had to be pooled together for one to be operational long enough. Once it broke down, ran out of fuel, or had no ammo left, they would discard it.

    The Soviets did so fairly often too, but also used some German tanks as decoys. They would assemble a small platoon-like force of them, and have them precede their main force. The German defenders would spot their own tanks, thinking it a Panzer unit that was heading to the rear, and let their guard down. By the time they realized the tank silhouettes behind the Panzers were actually Soviet tanks, their window of opportunity for reacting effectively had greatly diminished.

  23. #323
    Were there any T34's on the western front? I doubt it, but you never know with the germans F-d logistical priorities.

  24. #324
    In combat units? Highly unlikely. One SS Division had an entire company of T34/76 tanks for the battle of Kursk, but losses, breakdowns, and cannibalization of parts ensured their arsenal didn't last more than a few months.

    Beutepanzers on the Western front would have been exclusively American/British vehicles, and the rare 3rd rate security unit with a few French tanks from the beginning of the war. Only the Shermans will be making an appearance at this point.

  25. #325

  26. #326
    Also, how is morale in particular going to apply to tanks? I'm guessing Training will be decreased reload time and increased accuracy.

  27. #327
    I was hoping you'd show a British Armoured Squadron.

    Looks good.

  28. #328
    I've added a few more write-ups on our site. You can find them all here: Units

    Here's a few samples.

    American:
    Medium Tank Platoon
    Armored Engineer Platoon
    Cavalry Recon Platoon

    British:
    Commando Section
    Royal Engineer Field Platoon
    Armoured Car Troop

    German:
    Sturmgeschütz-Zug
    Sicherungs-Zug

    In regards to the last one, the Sicherungs-Zug is a truly abysmal unit, best used as a speed-bump between the enemy and your more valuable troops. They're an interesting contrast to the usual image of an elite German soldier, though I don't expect many players to use them often.

  29. #329
    Keep them coming Strum. But keep working on the mod itself as well.

    Is there any email list we can join that will inform us when the mod is released or am I just gonna have keep an eye on this thread?

  31. #331
    No email list has been considered. We'll be posting a lot more in the lead up to our alpha release.

    Also anyone that's named a unit to date is allowed to name another if they wish. Also added a few more to our boards:
    Royal Artillery Anti-tank (SP) Troop
    Light Anti-aircraft Troop
    Funklenk Panzer-Zug

  32. #332
    Remote controlled tanks, sound interesting.

    Indeed! We are without a model for the Borgward IV at the moment, but we hope to remedy that soon.

  34. #334
    Ok, for my second request I would like to see the details of a British parachute company.

  35. #335
    It's not on our list of companies for the alpha, so keep in mind some elements of this may change before it's finally playable. It's split into two variations, one for airborne operations where it can only be supported by elements that can be parachuted or brought in by glider, and one for ground operations where it acts like regular infantry and can be supported by regular forces.

    Parachute Company

    EDIT:
    And added an independent Medium Tank Company, which is an interesting unit. Unlike it's divisional counterpart, the independent unit has no support from an armored division, and instead borrows its support from whatever infantry or airborne division it's attached to at the time. This means you can have the interesting mix of Shermans and foot-slogging infantry along with their towed artillery.

    Medium Tank Company (Independent)

    It's just my kind of thing, and just reading your descriptions, I had to check if there was a working version out and about

    Thanks for the kind words! There will be an open alpha, it's just taking us a while to get there because we do this in what little free time we have. Rest assured, that it is coming and we are excited to be so near a public alpha.

    Did you create the Sdkfz 234 versions with the 7.5cm guns already?

  41. #341
    The only armoured cars we have completed models for are:
    Sd Kfz 221, Sd Kfz 222, Sd Kfz 223, Sd Kfz 234/1, Sd Kfz 234/2, Sd Kfz 250/1, and Sd Kfz 250/9 (custom model)

    So this means the following are unavailable at this time:
    schwerer Panzerspäh-Zug
    schwerer Panzerspäh-Zug (7.5cm)
    schwerer Panzerspäh-Zug ('D)
    Panzerspäh-Zug ('B)

    We'd need the following to make the above platoons viable:
    Sd Kfz 231, Sd Kfz 232, Sd Kfz 233, Sd Kfz 234/3, Panzer II "Luchs" and/or Aufklärungspanzer 38(t)

    The rest are planned for the future when models become available and are released to the community. We have no modelers of our own, and rely solely on public model releases done by other modders.

    There's also the Type E and the Mixed organization, both of which are early '45 types. The Type E is a zany combination of three different half-tracks, the 250/1, the 250/3, and the 251/21. The Mixed used the 234/1 and 234/4. Neither of these two organizations would have seen much combat, if any, and it's unlikely any battalion received enough vehicles to completely outfit a single company.

    The most common is the leichter Panzerspäh-Zug and schwerer Panzerspäh-Zug, supported by schwerer Panzerspäh-Zug (7.5cm). The second most common is the Panzerspäh-Zug ('C'). The rest are uncommon or rare.

  42. #342
    any chance we could see the set up for a German tank destroyer company?

    also, are there going to be new effects for the different ways a tank can be destroyed? eg. fire starts inside the tank, will there be smoke coming from the top hatch?

  43. #343
    any chance we could see the set up for a German tank destroyer company?
    Like their US and British couterparts, German tank destroyer companies were intended to be parceled out as platoons to other units. A tank destroyer company would usually get assigned to a battalion (often an infantry battalion), and then split into platoons to cover those battalion's companies. The tank destroyer company HQ was more administrative than anything else. So the player's company can have a platoon of tank destroyers, but the player can't actually play a tank destroyer company.

    Here's the heavy tank-hunter platoon in the meantime. The non-heavy version will be coming soon.
    schwerer Panzerjäger-Zug

    also, are there going to be new effects for the different ways a tank can be destroyed? eg. fire starts inside the tank, will there be smoke coming from the top hatch?
    While we haven't edited the models with new visual effects like that, we do have the game play of these criticals working now. Penetrating hits can cause fires in a tank, forcing the crew to bail out and abandon the vehicle. At some point later on the fire will cook off the ammunition and cause it to be destroyed.

  44. #344
    when a crew abandons the tank are they able to fight or do they just retreat straight away? also are the tanks repairable/recrewable?

    Are Anti-tank guns able to get bogged in rough terrain or have any part of them damaged?

  45. Gamers Lounge Senior Member Company of Heroes Senior Member Dawn of War II Senior Member  #345
    Best of luck with this very ambitious scope, us players will probably be satisfied with the "core" selection of troops already

    Always makes me happy to see this thread bumped, especially when it contains new bits of informations.
    One step closer to the end of the decadent Eldar race.

    They immediately retreat. If you read excerpts from real tank aces, this was very common. Minor engine damage, either due to enemy fire or overworking, can be repaired by the crew. However, any other type of damage is not repairable in the field.

    Are Anti-tank guns able to get bogged in rough terrain or have any part of them damaged?
    They will get bogged down for sure. I'll get back to you on the damage.

    How will snipers be integrated? Will they come with their own transport? Are they stand-alone or will they be part of an infantry platoon?

  48. #348

    This will vary from unit to unit. The usage of snipers, in a fashion we're familiar with, was not something everyone agreed upon in WWII. In some cases they were just the dedicated marksman of a unit, but had no additional training. In other cases they were given additional training and expected to operate alone. They won't have their own transport, as motor vehicles would give away their position.

    Our plans for using new UI elements are still in the early stages, but I do have a mock-up that runs in-game.

    Sample Fortress Europe UI

    This would show the details of a particular infantry team or vehicle you currently have selected. Right now it just permanently draws that example, no matter what is (or is not) selected, but the plan is that it will only draw when you have something selected.

    The block on the left is unused at the moment.
