Wishing for a new campaign.

    Wishing for a new campaign.

There are several things that really annoy me with the design of the campaign that I hope Relic chooses to rectify when and if they release an expansion. Quite frankly the only good thing about the campaign is the rpg like gear system. Limited mission types, boring mission design and boss fights did not appeal to me as much as they might have. There are some things I'd like to see improved and added.

First and foremost more unit variety and more squad choices. Coupled with the ability to deploy more than one fighting force at a time. It would make sense that any continuation of the DoW2 campaign would allow the player more troops. Rhinos and Predators would also be a welcome addition to the roster for a new campaign. Fully customizable squads, not just the squad leader. I felt that one weak point of the campaign was the notion that the only reason for taking missions was to get a piece of armor or to preserve a factory whose benefits were rather pointless. I would wish for the return of the campaign map system from Dark Crusade. Perpetual squad reinforcement on the field is also a bit annoying. I'd prefer to see tougher marines whose loss would matter, necessitating the player to maintain levels of training and recruitment (perhaps a levelling system whereby each initiate has to earn their way into scouts, marines, terminator honours ect...)

i agree on all points. they really could have made it so much better and more complex, but they had to cater to the noobs who can barely play a game and make it "easy" ala WoW.

I would like Relic to put more RPG elements in. True character progression, more important squadmates (who are now redshirts, quite unfluffy...), non-linearity, developing your marines by directing their "career" paths, perhaps discovering a psychic potential in one of the recruits? More mission types, less generic, much more scripted. IG and fellow Marines aid. Perhaps missions in which the Imperial Navy flies sorties and ground support? Could be tied to sub-quests, like for example: rescue an IN airfield to secure their aid, save an IG general to earn IG support during some missions ranging from artillery support to independent units helping you acheive your objectives.

Coupled with active enemies, this would make missions more dynamic. Let's say you are defending a bastion with a handful of arbitres. If you secured IN aid, Thunderbolts will roam the skies, harassing enemy units attacking your positions. If you secured IG aid, you start with a few Stormtroopers aiding your defence, with mechanised formations arriving later to counterattack.

This system would also open new possibilities. What would happen if you befriended an Inquisitor? What would happen if you antagonised him? He could make lots of problems for you, think Toth in DoW1. Maybe some sort of "reputation system" to track your standing with other Imperial forces, ranging from Arbitres through local Administratum and Sororitas chapter to Adeptus Mechanicus.

Heh, maybe in DoW3. One can always dream...

What did you mean by this? If you meant building the same base over and over again at the start of each mission, then no I really, REALLY hope this never makes an appearance again. This made me not even want to finish the DC & SS campaigns.

Coupled with the ability to deploy more than one fighting force at a time.
What did you mean by this as well? As in larger scale engagements? For SM I loved that you had a few squads of tough troops. I really don't want to see a return to DoW 1. Although fighting off greater number of Tyranids & Orks would have been more exciting and true to the Fluff. Which some missions did capture, while others didn't.

Just a thought... Does anyone else miss the original Dawn of War Librarians? It seems like Warhammer as a whole has something against my poor Librarians. I play SM (when i'm not doing my Thousand Sons) on the table top and they kicked their ass in the new codex, and they repeatedly did it on the old DoW... Now they don't even exist! Shenanigans I say! Shenanigans!

Relic is supposed to have "Big Plans" for Librarians. We'll see what that's all about soon hopefully.

Really? Well spectacular then! You have assuaged my fears... I thought they had forgotten my beloved (and slightly insane) psykers. They're some of my favorite characters... Besides the Grey Knights and Ciaphas, of course.
