Wacky [or downright atrocious] ship names

    Here's my contribution:

Back when I was playing Star Trek : Starfleet Command online, I was sick of the gameplay along with other things.

After being totally fed up from losing my grand Federation CAI [not easy to earn ships when not doing the equivalent of constant hack and slash!] for my wingman decided to try out, of all things a Q-ship right at the Fed/Romulan frontier, I decided to play funny, so to speak.

My next ship was named "USS Cannon Fodder", and was a tiny FFE [escort frigate].

So I brought the thing out with minor outfitting, and on patrol, ran into a human-flown Romulan CL [light cruiser]. Since the ship's name indeed is true if I decided to try and fight the much superior Romulan ship without support, I decided to roleplay a bit.

    *launches probe for contact ID*

    [rough open chat log]

"Romulan cruiser, this is the USS Cannon Fodder, you are in violation of our borders. You are requested to turn back at once or be fired upon"

    "Haha die fed!"

Those people I tell you, have no sense of humor!

I'm guessing a FFE isn't even worth being "fed to the cannon"?

LOL good story Tel. BTW I presume you are talking about SFC 3. Although I got the game it just did not do it for me. Unlike SFC2 did.

Anyway with regard to ship names, I do remember the name of a ship from the I-War series if games which had been "appropriated" from the Navy by the rebels.

It was called "Catch me if you can". The name was sprawled all over the destroyer in spray paint. Something I found funny and added to the storyline so much as it gave an insight to the rebel’s mentality.

There was a movie on the Sci-Fi channel which featured a research station / submarine of some sort called the "SS Hubris." Of course there was a terrible accident which threatened mankind. This is why you shouldn't name ships like that.

You can pick any ship from Iain M. Banks' Culture books if you want funny/ronic/whatever shipnames.

Link to a list of them:

    http://lib.fo.am/cgi-bin/view/Libarynth/CultureShips

    Some examples:

    GSV Irregular Apocalyse
GSV No More Mr Nice Guy

    Clipper Screw Loose
    GCU Just Read The Instructions
    GSV So Much For Subtlety
    Superlifter Kiss My Ass

    GCU Only Slightly Bent
    GCU Space Monster
GCU Funny, It Worked Last Time...
    GCU Boo!

    GCU Reasonable Excuse
    GCU Unacceptable Behaviour

    Shoot Them Later etc

The nomenclature is in the bottom pf page

The odd names are explained by being made up by the Mind of the ship itself

SFC3 doesn't have FFEs. There are FFs (Saber class).

Independence War had some great indie ships.

Personally, I prefer using contradictions as shipnames for my stories. Law-of-Anarchy, Peace of Battle, and suchlike.

Along those lines, I thought it was hysterical that the Covvies had a ship named "Truth and Reconciliation."

I find it hilarious how many times one person can misspell apocalypse without realising.

I take those are of the 'downright atrocious' category of naval nomenclature?

I don't get the "Truth and Reconcilliation" reference. I feel like I should, but all I can think of is something to do with Nelson Mandella.

Vaar, the Covvies version of truth probably comes blue-hot and streaking towards your face, and come to think of it they might reconcile with your blackened corpse. That's why the name of their cruiser makes me laugh.

You never know, the covenant may be really nice unless you somehow represent a major insult to their religion...

The backstory to Halo pretty much said humans look exactly like the Covie religions' version of the devil. Hence the shouted comments of the Grunts about "Die devil Die!" and such.

Truth and Reconcilliation sounded religious, not humorous.

That was SFC2 - I'd like to get the 3rd version if I can find it.

    Independence War

The DD [destroyer] with "Catch me if you can" spraypainted on it is the "Under New Ownership". Pretty apt name

Indie ships are entertaining - look at the Spartacus' fuselage art.

    And the SS "ESSESS"
    ROFL.

UNO was great, but there were some other clever ones, like the Jolly Roger, Irresistable Force/Immovable Object duo, and some of the S-fighter names.

Tel’ and Var…. You are right it was called the UNO...... I stand corrected

As for SFC3.... Don't get it. It is just a dumbed (really dumbed) down version of SFC2 with only 4 playable races. And it is TNG based, not SFB.

Playable but I would wait until you see it in a bargain bucket (preferably with some KFC)

How could I forget! From the Jumpgate Beta days:

I had a Death-Moth called the QSS Pkunk.

Which is really only wacky if you know what the ship looks like, and why it's called the Death Moth to begin with. I couldn't remember what it's actually called. The Storm? The Tornado?

If you're talking about the Pkunk ships in Star Control 2, it's the Fury. I love that ship.

You don't find it ironic that a fanatic, genocidal galactic empire would name a warship the "Truth and Reconciliation" ?! There's tremendous contrast between these ideas and the Covenant's demonstration of them.

Prankoys, the Pkunk's ship was named the Fury, but in Jumpgate there was a Quantar medium fighter which was a dead ringer for the Fury. It was called the storm or the tornado or something stupid, but everyone called it the "Death Moth" for two reasons: it was the first serious combat craft you had access to on the Quantar side, and the other is that those whopping wings often got you killed while you were trying to dock, flip beacons, enter jumpgates, or mine asteroids. Anyway, mine was named the "QSS Pkunk" because more people would get it.

The one with the wings was the Cyclone.
