-=DoW40k2:WOA=- (ret) - Tau updates #1459

  1. #501
um...why would you remove auto-cover? cover is such an important aspect of the game. hell, if you were being shot at by bolters, i would want any cover i could get!

  2. #502
Question: Are you going to release the models for the races that are already in-game, or are you going to wait until your entire project is done and release ALL the models at once (necrons, tau, etc.)? Are the game assets going to be a separate release from WoA?

  3. #503
    one question:
I read that you want a campaign mod, too.
So do you first change the Campaign(s) and than the Skirmish/Multi player?

Because the video did not look like organized formations of marines it looked... Orky, and that looks pretty strange.

I'm not saying remove anything as I have no idea how you could make this many units in a squad look normal in a game so cover dependent unless you remove it. Don't get me wrong, I'm looking forward to the outcome, all your previous mods have been great and I'm certain this will be too.

WoA will just need larger maps, so a bunch of map exclusives.

Yeah bigger maps would help, my main question is will they mod it in such a way that would have certain squads moving in formations like Dawn of Wars Space Marines.

  7. #507
I'm in agreement with Eigher, it seems that the kind of scale that can be expected from this mod is simply not compatible with the current map offerings that are available in DoW at the moment. Just trying to envision a Baneblade trying to traverse the kind of distances you would expect in something like the Capital Spire map just simply does not seem right with me.

And a side question, Can we expect some more things that could be done with globals? I.e. having more of them in general or having unique nukes for each different commander? Maybe even having certain strategic points being able to regenerate global points so they can be deployed with greater frequency? It's always bugged me that globals were rarely(if ever) used in most games that i play.

  8. #508
if you do make larger maps, please keep in mind people who load slower than others :\

  9. #509
I think globals should be done more like special ruules for tatbetop Like Creeds "For the Glory of Cadia" kinda stuff.

But will they be usable by others
maybe, depends. titans are things that are like a monopoly round here.. everyone wants one but cant be bothered to make there own or doesn't have the tools to do so.

Cover: Its staying. reworked quite a lot though and almost everything uses it now.

Are you going to release the models for the races that are already in-game, or are you going to wait until your entire project is done and release ALL the models at once (necrons, tau, etc.)? Are the game assets going to be a separate release from WoA?
we'll release them the same way as FoK, mostly on each major update. there will be a list available of what can and cant be used at the time.

I read that you want a campaign mod, too.
So do you first change the Campaign(s) and than the Skirmish/Multi player?
we're working on both at the same time. since the chaos rising add-on, we decided to keep our code separate from the actual game where possible and the campaign and MP code will be similar too.

I'm in agreement with Eigher, it seems that the kind of scale that can be expected from this mod is simply not compatible with the current map offerings that are available in DoW at the moment. Just trying to envision a Baneblade trying to traverse the kind of distances you would expect in something like the Capital Spire map just simply does not seem right with me.
ill probably get you a few pics of the scales from rhino-to land raider to baneblade currently just so you can get an idea of how big they are. baneblade is pretty much twice the size of the rhino. ingame pics will probably be a bit longer, though i havent seen my self yet.

bigger maps will need a new mapper as ours doesnt have the time anymore. we do accept contributions providing everybody can use them too without the need to ask 2-3 different people in the process.

we also accept other people on the team. just ask and let us know what you can do. as im helping countless other people aswell, it makes it harder for us to accept people with little knowledge in mod making though.

And a side question, Can we expect some more things that could be done with globals? I.e. having more of them in general or having unique nukes for each different commander? Maybe even having certain strategic points being able to regenerate global points so they can be deployed with greater frequency? it goes without saying that they will be more race specific but the whole thing is going to get a rework later on anyway in terms of what gives you x amount of ability points.

chaos will probably use it more in terms of upgrades and daemon purchases though, as i want it to be more of a dedication thing rather than just an ability power meter.

couldnt you just possibly scale down units, and not have to make any new maps? thats what you guys did with FoK i believe.

yes, and change several hundreds of other files that we cant edit yet.

with fok, we only had to change jut a lua file.

with dow 2 is a lot more work.

I hope we can see some possesed marines like this:

Ahite since im kind of a lurker (cba to register on all those sites... why is there no option to post as anonymous?) i rarely state my opinnion on the mods progress and such but in this particular example i have to say something thats actually troubling me - i loved FoK (still play it from time to time) but this mod for DoW2 might not work. As you well know the majority of the feel of this game (DoW2) is made up by the unit shoutouts and comments. My problem with this is how are you guys going to get over the lack of speeches for... oh lets say sisters of battle (im intentionally leaving necrons behind because their vocabulary is a bunch of "tzzztz" and "blings" )? It will be weird to hear the voiceovers from DoW 1 as i think thats what you will be aiming for right? Just curious :s

horus could just record the dow1 sob voiceovers and input them into dow2 somehow
I'm not depressed, the world's just happier than me.

  16. #516
i think he said voices werent a problem earlier on in the thread.

edit: @calgar and no, he cant do that cause that would be illegal.

Any updated ETA on expected first release? I mean, just the existing races and a few campaign missions really? I can't wait to see what your team has done so far!

"when its done" has kind of evolved into "When its ready".

  22. #522
    heh

So what will be the scale of this compared to FoK? I'm esp interested in guard - more tanks? More types of men? If this is nearly as good as FoK, I'm looking forward to it

the same FO chart stuff. 2 hq units, 6troops etc

  24. #524
Of course, a single troop choice for the IG consists of several squads of Guardsmen plus the Heavy Weapons and Special Weapons Squads.

I can imagine a Guardsman when these superheavies come out: "You bastards have killed 500 of my friends and comrades, and that's just in my company, but now, it's payback time!".

Off subject- I hated Brazil Rendering. I had to remake all of my textures for it. But yes- it does look sexy.

On subject- Horus, how in the world do you plan on getting that in-game? I don't think there's a map big enough for it!

  32. #532
you SUUUURE you don't want a titan?

    Mines almost done.

Im really psyched about this, I am a massive fan of FoK and I am glad we will be getting something similar for DOW2.

The main thing I disliked about DoW2 was the fact I thought it would be more like CoH - which FoK took some ideas from. It was just... scaled down so much, the epic battle's I imagined were more like skirmishes between 2-3 squads at best.

Another dislike was the wholes choose your hero before play - I hope this is scrapped or rethought.
As the framework is there though it could be used to allow you to choose different doctrines of your army.

I.e - to allow the choosing of four to five variations with thier individual units and visual styles such as guard armies, chaos legions, Eldar Craftworlds etc..

SM allows: Codex Chapter, Blood Angels, Dark Angels, Black Templars (possibly Space Wolves?).

Chaos allows for: Undivided, Khorne, Slaanesh, Tzeench or Nurgle etc...

Could be interesting, but would mean a little more work on the developers part, although it could be the as easy as choosing the commander of the various faction you want, and allowing their specific units just like the Zeal abilities.

Keep up the good work, i await this with great anticipation

nice so will you use the eldar vehicals' grav thingy

and you like that smiley, dont you...?

  38. #538
Just out of interest, are you intending to introduce Eldar factions as well? If you are making almost all the Aspects and what with Seer Council, Wraithguard, Wraithlords and Guardian Platforms and Rangers already in game, it would be possible for you to do craftworld armies based on the big five. Ie.
Biel Tan - all Aspects, only Guardian and Storm Guardian squads
Ulthwe - All Guardian units, Seer Council, Warlocks for all guardian squads, etc
Alaitoc - Rangers, Pathfinders, maybe some specialised stealthy units (or maybe even Eldar Corsairs).
Sam Hain - Rangers, all fast moving units.
Iyanden - Wraith Guard, Wraith Lords, Warlocks (spiritseers), etc?

they will be under just Eldar.

they do not warrant any real differences to merit being separate factions.

BTW: haven't posted any updates after that streak as im working on something a bit more suitable for the tau.

i dont see creating models as a waste of time, even if the game company releases similar things later on down the road.

the thing i hate the most is people assuming it is or will be when its often not.

i enjoy modelling things. i suppose i could ask why you would go on holiday and waste your time when you could be doing something to better humanity. i already know the answer.

  45. #545
Also, many times I find that user-created models such as Horusheretic's are superior to the ones that come with the game. Consider his Techmarine from FoK, with full servo harness and AdMech stylized power axe. Wouldn't you rather get THAT in the game than the one relic made, which doesn't even have a functional servo arm for combat?

Look at the level of detail in the models made by people who do this sort of thing for pure enjoyment compared to the ones that get rushed out to meet a quota or deadline. I think you'll see the difference.

couldn't agree more, Gabe made me think of other games and its mods and yes, I have never seen a v-model better then a modded one. mods are the life-force for games, they increase gameplay, replay value, and funky toys to play with. don’t get me wrong V-games are good fun, but mods just make them that much better

btw, this is getting more and more epic, FoK was amazing it totally resurrected DC for me, and if something like FoK is coming to DOW II….

I noticed that you intend to bring Grey Knights into the game, if you are still intending to do this you must make them an independant race and not whore them out to the lame marines.
