    Hehe, I hear you guys.
I for myself never had the idea to become something like a concept artist but I always wanted to work as a creative graphics designer (as I do now) and I have to say that my skills in drawing and the general idea for design, that we developed helped me getting into this position.
You might not become a concept artist but doing other stuff that is at least remotely connected to our hobby really gives you a lot.
I love going to work, because I know I can do stuff that I like there.

I'm creating animations in After Effects, design user interfaces, create designs for presentations on the ipad and sometimes even my drawing skills are needed to do illustrations.

After all we have a nice hobby and you can make your hobby your job, even outside of the games and movie sector.

Heya guys. Since the last time I posted here I moved to Seattle- HOWDY BALANCE. Became a full time art student, am shunning potential girlfriends, dropped video games/TV, and now put in uh... 80 hours a week studio time. I'm the only person in studio 80% of the time and work like the deadline is tomorrow even on long term projects. It's a blast, and I think art is really what I want to do. Uh anyway- have an oil painting. Pretty nervous about putting this on here as it's like 20+ hours of work since I started Sunday. It's also only my second oil ever. Probably gonna edit this later with a better picture with a better camera. I really, really, really wanna be a concept artist storyboarder of some kind.

Where you going to school Pook? I might have to try and run into you sometime. :P

Not bad at all for your second oil ever, though I'm having some trouble reading the teapot there. Hope you're able to keep up the work ethic. You're gonna need it if you want to pursue concept art.

Studying at NSCC right now, deciding degrees really. I want both the bachelor in comp-sci as well as an associate of fine arts.
Thank you for the compliment, sir. I intend to get much, much better at these paintings. I think you're right about the teapot (I get antsy about the perspective still, especially regarding the jug there), but projects are moving along and I guess it will just have to be left as is (as much as I really do want to render further). My instructor laughed when I told her I wanted the control level of digital painting with oils. Still determined to prove her wrong.

Haha, I lived in an apartment right next to NSCC for a couple months. XD Northgate, Burien, Redmond, Puyallup, Queen Anne...jeez I've lived all over the place.

The one thing I would stress the most is that, if you're going for concept art, I can guarantee you that your classes alone will not get you the instruction and skill level you're after. You need to go above and beyond what your instructors expect of you, dig deeper than just what they teach you. Most of these schools are full of faculty that are so entrenched in their own techniques and philosophies that they will not consider digital painting as art in any sense. I've sat through classes on PhotoShop where I knew significantly more than the instructor, and digital art classes with instructors that don't know squat about digital painting.

I'm not saying that's necessarily the case with your school, but I assure you that an associates degree alone will not get you into a studio. It might take several years beyond your education just to get your foot in the door somewhere, even if you're working full-steam all the time. Studios don't give a rip what degree you have--it's all about skill level. Pursue instruction outside of class, look online for good tutorials, lessons, and communities where you can learn and grow as an artist.

I wish I'd taken things more seriously when I was in my four-year illustration program, and not trusted it to the reassurances of my professors when they told me that I was getting all the instruction I needed. Your instructors don't know anything about concept art, or how difficult it is to find that kind of work. Don't let them pull the wool over your eyes. Use them, learn from them, but don't stop there. Learn on your own, and grow on your own as well.

Balance knows the score. Concept art is next to impossible to get into. I'd say you need to be in the top 0.5% or less of aspiring concept artists to be able to actually turn it into a career. Even some of the best artists I know, who far outstrip my own ability, struggle to find work. It's just a pretty crap career choice unless you 100% know you are amazing.

That said, art skills can be applied to much more than just concept art. Design, motion graphics, filmography, marketing work, loads of other fields draw from it.

Haha, that's definitely Tom Scholes for ya, Talros. :P Color pallete, mood, it's all there. What kind of approach did you use to simulate his style?

Thought I'd stop being too adventurous, which always results in frustration, anger and tears. So I had a go at this still life thing I heard about before.

@Commissar--Art Spam has always been for personal work. If you feel a particular artists merits attention and discussion, start a thread for it.

@Thorno--put some blue reflected light on that sucker, you should have enough light bouncing off that surface to illuminate it from behind. No reason for it to be pitch black like that.

Here are some more paintings. Object listing side to side, that is a problem I have and intend to fix. Anyway, these are the other two oils I did since the preliminary sepia. The coloured still life was done the night before it was due in panic mode (because I scrapped V1 of that painting in frustration). The fire extinguisher was done with time and other such niceties. I do have a question for you all regarding digital scene setting. On my computer I really have no sense of how big an image is, and thus it is harder to get a comfy composition out of it, like most things I assume the solution is the practise? Annnyway, keepin' at it, because shooting rainbows from my fingers would be a nice skill.

The art in here looks great, keep it up guys!

You can always crop the image or change the proportions in Image/Canvas Size, if the composition needs tweaking. My pieces are almost never the same proportions I had when I started. Just make sure you keep the resolution reasonably high, at least 2000 pixels for your shortest side.

On a side note, my four month hiatus from art is ALMOST OVER, can't wait to start painting again.

  27. #577
Looking forward to seeing more stuff from you Balance

Also, been picking up painting as the exam season is dying down

Either someone's a fan of your work, or that's one hell of a coincidence.

I'm leaning towards the former. That ICF does looks spectacular. I should have made a model when you first made it.

  31. #581
    Wow, that's bold.

Hm, I really like the concept, Balance, but it almost feels like the focal point is the in the wrong place. I keep looking at the tree, you know? Then I look at the castle and I think, "Hum yeah... that's impressive." then look back at the tree.
I think it's due to the sharp, almost black/white contrast that is on the left side of the page between the immediate foreground and the sun-struck outcropping there.
Noice piece, though, sir. You in the Seattle area as of late?

Also we're at almost 600 posts in this thread, maybe it's time for Art Spam XXII? (Jussaiyan)

Here's one without the trees in it, I do think I kinda like it better.
