Read This Model Showroom III - Show Hard With a Vengeance

The all new, all shiny model showroom thread!

Please keep to the spirit of the old rules:
You are welcome to comment, critique and cheer. If you want more individually fitting critique, remember to include a description of what you're trying to achieve with the model, so everyone else will have a better chance of knowing what they're talking about.

If you dump a lot of pictures or very large ones, please thumbnail or link them; don't only hide them behind spoilers either please, they still download and still break the forum layout when unspoilered.
    Keep critique respectful and constructive.

kinda reminds me of my Lizaanj models

I think that Lizzani will benefit if they'll take such a coloring.

i'll be the first to post something then

i present Qwarr-jet. the god of war:

been working on him over in the legacies art dump..

when he's done, does anyone want to texture and put him ingame? (i'm not worthy for either task... )

I was about to say the same, wheres the engines? I love that ship, are there any better pictures of it?

Nay, I prefer the grey and yellow, and as that is the color scheme of the concept drawing they're based on, well, best to keep them those colors I think. If we made the Lizaanj ships white like that they might get confused with Kadesh designs a little bit.

CHromes writting does get better with each part, so if it seems poor at first bear in mind it gets a LOT better over time. She's proffeshinol writter quality by the end IMHO.

Also Qwaar dosen't turn up till the end of PtII and PtIII is best for getting a full feel for the ship (he's hillarious to listen to), but reading the preceeding stuff is useful for understanding the characters involved.

I was about to say the same, wheres the engines? I love that ship, are there any better pictures of it?
The full size vershion of chromes avatar pic is by far the best currently IMHO, and chrome has more or less said the same.

Here's a few linkies to the best ones though.

Those images are HIGHLY contradictory, one shows a 4 sided shape, one shoes a 3 sided, one shows wings that are arrow shaped, one shows one that is flat...Sigh, Ive ended up mixing the two, ive started making the ones hes got on his profile picture, but with 3 sides....

Qwaar is most defintly 3 sided. I think the first of the 3 is best as it shows you looking at qwarr from above one of the edges. He's described as a 3 sides Obseleisk actually. And not a curve on him anywhere.

    Awesome, Thumbs up.

Of course there is no detail, anywhere, apart from the back, where ive got all the engines, which are like vents, and the main engine, which is a gap, where the big bit stops getting bigger and gets smaller, but yeah, is this the correct overall shape?

Heres the engines at the back

    And heres them highlighted

@Keyboard: Actually that pic in chromes pic IS 3 sides, it's just the angle your seeing it from. But i think you've worked that out from one of your shots of your new model.

As to the model. Only chrome can tell you for sure what it's supposed to look like so my commentary is based puerly off the descriptions of him from Legacies, (mainly Legacies 2).

    1. i'd lose the slight v you've got in each face. Qwarr, (minus the engine area), is described in the text as a 3 sided obselisk. Thats bassiclly the same as a really tall 3 sided pyramid. So i'd go for the tottally flat faced look on him.

    2. In the same Vein i'd remove the long thin point. Or rather slightly stretch Qwarr so that it's inside/underneah his wings. He even has to open them to fire the main gun, (which is presumebly what that is). I know chrome has it on her big picture. But every other one i've seen has it be eithier smaller or contained within the area covered by the wings, and right now it just looks a bit odd stuck out like tha IMHO.

    3. Likewise i'd drop the raised section at the rear of the wings (where chrome's glow is on her pick), flat and let a texture handle it./ It allways looked like lighting detail rather than hull detail to me. Plus it helps with the sleek look IMHO.

    4. I'd adjust the rear engine area a bit, I get the impreshion that eithier he has a single large drive slot cutting across the rear area in the horizontal plane or 3 small one all running exactly parrellel to his wing surfaces. I'd imagined them being located at the back edge directly below where the wing hinges are, rather on the protruding section to the rear, though that works just as well IMHO. Also he has guns under his engines, you need to put them more inboard from the edges of wherever you mount them so you can put the guns slot in.

    5. I'd make that fat rear section 6 sided if possibble. Qwarrs built around 3's it seems. Everythings triangles and combinations therof. Also that rear most "pole" section is too fat and angular IMHO. Going to 9 sides and thining it down somm more would be good IMHO.

    6. Remeber this is all IMHO. It IS your model after all.

    7. Seeing this has basiclly reinforced an opinion a replay of HW2 has brought out in me.

Most Qwarr Models have a simple flaw.

They try to make him look like a ship.

Look at Sajuuk. It dosen't look like a ship at all. It looks more like a giant flying gun.

What does the big Qwaar pic remind you of? For me it's a giant flying Spear-tip.

Neithier looks like a ship, they look like living weapons. Too many people go for the ship look, when they should just focus on making him look like a single giant weapon.

The Salvette is just beautiful and I agree a little more than Hi-poly for a corvette sized ship.

...now, how will it work in game?

  31. #31
Good grief, Ringleader! If I didn't know that was a Taiidan Salvage Corvette I'd think it was one of the most frightening ships I've ever seen! You're going to go and make us have to make upgraded meshes of HW2 ships just to keep up with that standard.

Granted the amount of detail might be over the top. But I love over the top.

  32. #32
The level of detail on Ringleader's Salvage Corvette is achievable in HW2 (with a sane poly count) if you learn to use the parallax shader. If you make a lower poly mesh and then use one of the various mesh baking tools to generate a parallax map from the high detail model, it can look just as good in game (actually you could add even more detail such as hull panels etc...).

    That would be awesome!

The Taiidani Remodelling Project is about remodeling, not remaking the whole HW1 gameplay, which is more likely to be just a bonus. It's just a model dump. People can do whatever they want with it after, so this will probably end up like some other ships like the support frig, research ship etc.

Comparing XP to Win7 is a bad idea on so many levels.

But this really doesn't belong in this thread.

Am i a prophet or what?

Posted by me in Model Showroom II (post #19): Otherwise in a year from now this thread might get also closed and replaced with "Model Showroom III - Show Harder with a Vengeance" and "Model Showroom 4 - Model Fast - Texture Faster"

    @ Whisper2Me
: Dude you are a step closer to be crowned King! Model Showroom 4 is just next!!!! Heheh

As for me i've been busy doing variations on Taiidani ships. The main idea was to make my ships have the original Taiidani feeling but with various design changes.THis is more obvious in the Fighter and Corvette class variations. On the other hand the Frigates are closer to the original concept i just thought it would be better to add more detail and less changes on the design cause it would rather mess the feeling. All models are made from scratch no kitbashing and no vanilla meshes involved in any part.

    Taiidan Scout

    Taiidan Upgraded Scout

    Taiidan Interceptor

    Attack Bomber

    Defence Fighter and Defender

    Light Corvette

    Heavy Corvette

    Multigun Corvette

    Salvage Corvette

    Standard Frigate

    Support Frigate

    Ion Frigate

    Defence Frigate

    Mothership

Anyway i could'n post more images in one post...(i overdid it) I still need to make some more designs for the destroyers, carrier and the cruiser but i think its pretty easier now since the hard part is over. Overally i decided to make the Frigates closer to the original ships cause i could not get a desighn that wouldn't ruin the "Taiidani" feeling. BTW this is something different than the Classical Taiidani Remodel project. I am not truying to remodel all Taiidani ships with exact eometry and detail, my intention is to make variations that look like the original ships only in the race feeling and not in every detail. (BTW something is wrong in my photobucket account..it took an hour to upload those pngs)

You should put the picture someplace else, because they just won't load. Anyway, the few thumbnails that I managed to load look great, but I have to see the real-size pictures to make my opinion.

EDIT : It works now. I can definitely see the inspiration from old concept arts here, good idea.

Still, the guns of the upgraded scout just doesn't fit it - who want guns as big as the ship itself in a recon fighter ? Neither does the "bubble" in the lower front part of the corvettes - too rounded. Also, the engines of the Salvette just look wrong.

But I like what you did with the fighter engines, the defense fighter, and the detail on the MS look awesome.

EDIT2 : The shell-like thingy on the top of the corvettes looks good too. But the side muzzle of the inty is too thin.

Thanks for your comments m8 i am taking all of them under consideration. I had the same feeling originally on the rounded corvette nose but no matter how i changed it, the nose looked way to bulky in some alternate versions on the model.

As for the taiidan upgraded scout i needed to make the weapon look more aggressive.Actually it is a result of an idea i had with a friend on writing a background script on an alternate HW universe. In Taiidan development research notes (his idea) most of the Taiidan fighter ships were based in experimental changes made on the "succesfull" Fiirkan desighn. The upgraded scout in our plotline was a result of an effort to make the Fiirkan more battle efficient and to fill in the lack of a succesfull fighter (this is before the creation of the Triikor). The ship is desighned in a way to look more bulky and threatening while maintaining the strong max speed engine of the scout. Still lacks the maneuverability of a good fighter. On the other hand my Triikor was designed in a way to fill that gap. It has a smaller but more battle efficient engine and more wings generally giving the ship higher maneuverability.

Anyway i thought it might be a good idea to use that concept for the upgraded scout weapon. I thought it was a perfect example of what i wanted the ship to look like in firepower terms at least.

As for the salvage corvette you are right. i just wanted to make it look a bit different than the original ship so i ended up with that. Anyway the engines could be better but i didn;t want to watste so much time on that ship.

Methinks that last one is by Jason Aaron Kambeitz.
If you see JAK or AK in the filename it's that genius.
If you see RC its Rob Cunningham.
S'far as I can tell anyway.

@Starscream good work there now some textures

    My latest work

Texture was made from scratch (first time for me) and the model is a rough reimage of the original swarmer. Please note it's not intended to be 100% identical to the original Kadeshi Swarmer.
