I think it's the depth perception it adds keboard, there's no need to make it as tall though, even somthing a tenth the height, if sutibbly teired and shaped from other directions could do it. That said i think a good texture would solve the issue as easily as model modification, as a DD texture would include all kinds of large features that don't work ona fighter and are obviouslly only part of a larger craft.
I don't know what i'm talking about, ignore me.

Oh yeah, the texture is gonna make it look suuwheeeett! It is simply that its a fighter shape, the top. we associate smooth flat hulls, with aerodynamical shapes/curves/edges/points with aircraft so ofc people are going to think thats a fighter....but if you think that, your badly mistaken. 330 Tera Watts of electro plasmic mesons wrong....aimed at your face wrong :P

    ----------

Might as well show you the other crap im working on! The cruiser (left) and BC (middle) . there about 30 mins work, and just the basic idea.

  4. #1654
    My first homeworld 2 model.

    Still WIP obviously.

It's a corvette but in the mod corvettes are the size of frigades but move star trek style.

  6. #1656
Woops hehe, yea its my first model i'm used to low poly stuff because I work on the old sage engine for my Parallel wars mod. However I have been doing more work since this pic.

    I await your model now

  8. #1658
Is it me or are they more cartoony than HW2 models? More like HW1 stylisation?

  9. #1659
The shape could be improved, it look less predatorian than usual Vaygr shape.
I am especially not entertained by the straight green light, and the whole bottom.

But well at least, its a kewl looking finished ship ^^ .

Are those textures copy pasted from existing models? that might make the cartoony look illusion

    Its my turn!

  11. #1661

You can also see my other stuff in mod db my nick there is -UNI-

Also those turrets are just placeholders except middleone with 4 long barrels

This is my project number 1 atm.. i wanna texture this monster even it would take long.

I'm Guessing the size of that thing is over the "several km" mark?

  14. #1664
That's a very nice model, but I feel the need to comment on it from a tactical point of view.

That gun arrangement is awful. The firing arcs for those turrets are going to make them useless against any target that isn't directly broadside to the ship. Why not mount them on the top and bottom or on the sides rather than that weird in-the-middle configuration?
"I've never understood the purpose of stuffing a turkey. It's like one final indignity for the bird. It's like, "Okay, turkey, first we kill you, then pluck you, then chop off your head, then skin you, and then, to top it all off, we SHOVE SOGGY STALE BREAD UP YOUR BUTT." Yeah! Go humans! Woo!"
    -a vegetarian friend of mine

  15. #1665

    Tactical?

I know about that and turret coverage is not problem so long as u use right tactics..

also ship can be coded to use broadside vs enemy (example destroyers only use their broadside when directly attacking and not moving) i have tested that and it works.

it's not so bad like vaygr battlecruiser which haves that cannon at front.. and can only shoot forward..

  16. #1666
Nice ship design, but don't like how the hull turret hole are made.

If i am not wrong, it would only be a little bigger than actual vaygr cruser, if my reference is not a mistake (turret with a hat on canons is vaygr turret?).

  17. #1667

    Models

Oh yeah.. after rethinking i made new turret model.. and no more holes but i gonna use that in different ship..

I like the idea of broadside guns... it reminds me of them good old sailing ships. They can be heavy guns mounted somewhat like old-fashioned Artillery guns. You know, on rails or something. turrets that only fire broadsides aren't really a good investment but tactically I'd say you wouldn't want to face the broadside of say about 30 heavy drivers.(no turrets mean more, bigger guns).

So tell me, doesn't that 4x blow the hell out of the front turrets, and them, each other?

Broadside only limits firing arc and total amount of tactics though.

  20. #1670

    Turrets

I would like to place more turrets but it makes ship polycount highger and it affects gameplay in big fights, so i just put couple turrets max about 15-20. So i just place couple big turrets + some medium turrets and that's it..

Ship is capital killer so it haves role to kill other capitals, not fighters etc..

I also make every big turret destroyable so small bomber group can take them out easily. after that ship is pretty useless and repairs take long. i dont wanna make it "biggest ship best ship game" like some mods are

To be honest, warships are actually more interesting without a large load of turrets, if you see real life warships, their main armament never succeeds over 15 turrets to even begin with as the space can be used for something far more effective.

Higaran destroyer and battlecruiser for example, their hulls are focused on the weapons they mount, they do not have some kind of large batteries as that would be less effective with the total amount of space the ship hull actually offers.

@Melvin: Actually it#'s all a lot simpler than that in IRL.

Big guns became popular because of the range and armour penetration they had. Smaller cnanon could more easilly be mounted in multipule and more rapidlly loaded, allowing a greater weight of shells on target, but it came at the cost of range and armour penetration, and practical experiance showed that those two, (Range especially), where the battle deciders.

Of course in space this dosen't make as much sense as range and armour penetration are effectivlly independent of shell size, (Due to lack of air resistance). But bigger guns still have their uses in terms of providing greater damage per hit, (potentiolly very useful). Still there no reason lots of small guns can't work just as well, And performance isn't as bad as you'd expect, i've had models with over 1000 turrets on them before.

texturing in progress.. i found out that making homeworld 2 textures is hard.. even using textures from vanilla ships :P

Yes, it does seem to be hard (I have tried and not done well at it), but great textures make on mediocre model incredible and poor textures make a great model suck...

I like that ship. The design looks distinctly Vaygr without looking too much like the carrier or battlecruiser. Well done.

Uni, that is spectacular texture work! you must have spent alot of time looking at original textures really closely.

  27. #1677
Registered here absolutely years ago but never got around to doing anything, also forgot my details. Decided to give Homeworld modding another go anyway. Was a slow couple of weeks at work so came up with a military transport. Hugely over budget but that's curable. Figured the mid-sections could be dropped with both sections joining to form a more maneuverable frigate.

  28. #1678
god! how many polys/faces are in that? Based on something maybe?

If that's meant to be ingame, i think it could use a texture to replace a lot of blocks there

  32. #1682
    @ UNI
You just defined the sexiness :P!

And to A_Panda, your ship look kinda interesting. I don't like the shape very much, but i wait to see what you could create in the same fashion.

  33. #1683
Poly count may be a little high, the big one is just under 50k. Got it down from 55k so I'm winning!

I prefer form over fashion. Babylon 5 over Star Trek, though the ships in both series look great. Ignoring the JJ Abrams, shakey camera, over-bloomed, every surface emits a lens flare, Battlestar Galactica style insult to Gene Roddenberry Star Trek. I don't see military or commercial vehicles being anything but lots of utility sections welded together. Even for shielding/deflection I prefer massive extended plating rather than a more defined hull. Can look for yourself if you want, I've got a long way to go in making them useable... you'll also see where the polygons were wasted.

Babylon 5 <3 just finished watching the whole lot! For the time, the CGI was stunning! Games nowadays are only coming close, B5 wasnt actually that high poly models. you can see straight lines on B5's curves, i reckon it was 64 or 48 segment cylinder, maybe even 32. Whats your favourite ship design? I actually really like the earth ships. they seem like they could actually be real!

  35. #1685
Lizaanj siege destroyer- death from away...
still needs a lot of greebles and goblins, but this is the basic idea.

Anyone knows how i can have a one sided broadside stance??

The higgaran Destroyer has an Attack pattern thats broadside so i'd use that.

@Keyboard: I think B5's greatest bit of CGI is the way despie not being photo realistic it still manages to be perfectlly beliviable when much later CGI work tends to break the immershion. Probably because with later works it's off in diffrent but more subtle ways which pushes it more into uincanny valley territory. Still it's impressive for that alone, it meas despite everything the CGI hasn't really dated badly at all.

As for the best ship, i'm quite fond of the earth ships too, but i also love the white stars. Probably ion the end i'd go with the Excalibur as it combines the best of both. The Episode "The Memmory of War" also contains my second creepiest moment, the bit where Irlerson gets the alien recording translated. Freaky as hell and only got recently moved to second place, (in case your wondering, whatched new DrWho's "The Impossibble Planet", seeing the scarlet system burning up qualifies as high octane nightmare fuel of the highest order).

  37. #1687
The question is if you can have a broadside attack only on just port or just starboard side, always one and the same side.

As far as i know, no, though the circle pattern might have a clockwise/anti-clockwise function to it, (I can't remeber).

Had to "fatten" it, so it could fit 2 missile Pods... after all the tail of a scorpion is a mean killer...

Ahh right, i'd be tempted to add a bit more detail to represent that. Recesses the front face, and maybe even angle the tips forward. Good modelling though .

Also, cool carrier jkburna. Your good at this cpying an existing design stuff. Makes me a littile envious .

  45. #1695
Well, I kinda threw this together in sketchup. I based it off the Hiigaran BC for size and general shape, but wanted it to have an increased capacity for strike craft. Here's my new strike carrier.....if i can ever get a good texture made.......

And now for the fleet.... The fighter, heavy fighter, the scorpion, the Titan battleship, the battleship and lastly the Heavy cannon frigate
