[Eastern Front mod]Is EF worth it?

Title says for itself. Should I wait a long time for EF or just stick to ToV

(P.S.) The guys forgot the Russian's famous Scorched Earth Doctrine (Those Panzer Elite CopyCats!)
Last edited by GeoffS; 21st Jun 10 at 5:18 PM. Reason: Added tag to title
Why the comp can do things we cant in CoH: We have to press up down left right a b x y in .25 seconds to place SA on enemy territory, etc.

Well the Scorched Earth was added to the Panzer Elite in vCoH.

Anyway, yes Eastern Front Mod is nice to play, but personally I don't really like the current teching of the Russian, though it's much better since the patch they released.

    But's it's really good.

You do realise its a mod right and not from Relic? So its free. They haven't edited anything from vCOH that I'm aware of and improved the skirmish AI.

Though it will probably take a while to balance fully its in a much better shape than on release.

not keen on EF, i dont like how the russians cannot retreat with any of their units really... id understand if it was just conscripts who could not retreat but:/

also recrewing axis weaponry?? i dont understand why not - just give them longer reload times and worse accuracy...
Real men used to play Wehr...

They cannot recrew because the game engine doesn't allow new faction to recrew teamweapons. They already contacted Relic for that, and hopefully with a new patch it will be fixed.

EF is a bit unbalanced right now, not a great deal but some. The thing I like about it is all those great maps that comes with it. The self loader makes it easy to play because of the two program files on my 64bit W7 machine. Other mods I tried didn’t work because of that and I didn’t feel like putting in the time to figure out how to get them to work. The Soviets have the power in EF. Not a hell of a lot of people on to play against and when you do find someone they want to play the Soviets.

They got a new patch coming out soon. It will allow retreat and it will fix the balance. Some of the guys from the reborn clan is testing it now. Also the new patch will have even more maps. There must be 20 or 30 new maps and more with this new patch. And a lot of these maps are awesome.

I would highly recommend that you give it a try. And it is completely free, you cant beat that.

what version is this mod up to? I Dld I think it was 1.10 the other day and played a few rounds and WOW did the russians suck. Thier Conscripts were totally useless, the Ingenrey couldnt beat them selves out a wet paper bag, the T34/85 was a worthless piece of.....russian technology. Then the Russians have no retreat command..I get that they had that not one step backwards thing going on but in CoH the retreat command is kinda a neccessity......Also their upgrades were so slow and expensive.....it was kinda cool but dang did the russians bite. It also suck that the Ingenery can only make MG bunkers if they get em in the command tree

If you read the changelog in their forums you will see the latest patch is 1.11. Just hit update on the loader. And if you really think the Soviets are weak then play your Wehr or PE against my Soviets. Your using conscripts the wrong way. Take a look at the replay I posted over there. I never use the T34. All you need is tank hunters, T90 and SU-85. Forget about that MG nest, its useless anyway.

In a state of perpetual confusion.
This thread started with a very poor opening post, asking for other peoples opinions about whether you will like a mod is fairly pointless since they can only give an opinion based on what they like. That may be very different to what you like.

Having said that, Duck141 has done the right thing and tried to turn it into a discussion about the mod and what it includes, so that should now be the focus of the thread. Discuss the Eastern Front mod and what you consider are its good points please, and if there are things you don't like about it then offer constructive criticism too.

Posts that are nothing more than "EF sucks" or "EF rocks" with no discussion to back them up will be deleted.

I think the idea and effort put in by the Eastern Front team is brilliant,
besides from that the mod is free, and the lack of one shot killing power of dartborne's tank battle in europe's at war which i like and a major factor which draw me away from the vanilla game and EF.
the russians are cool and their contribution to the war is significant, taking CoH as a platform to allow us to walk in the footsteps of Eastern Front Heroes definitely makes EF worth it.
In addition I play CoHs because i want to experience the Historical events and sensation of battle during World War II, where people gave their lives in the struggle against tyranny. Fighting alongside the forgotten heroes in Goodwood, Overloon, Antwerp, Hill 262, Uranus and Sevastopol is my greatest honour. As MoH still says you don't play, you volunteer!!

Its an interesting mod and most of the flaws are due to technicalities, like the team not being able to make Russian units recrew any heavy weapons. Aside from rough edges it seems quite a fun mod. Still needs lots of refining though in terms of the micro details like sound

The mod is obviously cool enough and worth the free download and trial, though as stated above the mod does require a few balance patches to improve the game.

Somtimes i wish Relic would just officialize EF and give them all the tools they need to easily dish out these updates!

Eastern Front is one of the most ambitious mods I've seen.

    PRO's

    # complete new faction (new models, sounds, abilites, doctrines etc.)
    # a lot of new maps, a handful of really good ones
    # awesome presentation (feels like an offical add-on)
    # after patch 111 major balancing issues were fixed, game is now almost rdy for compettive gameplay (I think with 1.2 it will be), and already more balanced then Brits or PE
    # Devs hit the nail regarding combination of historical accuracy and playability. The russians "feel" like the red army. Impressive.
    # easily installed... and deleted

    CON's

    # system requirements are higher than in vanilla coh
    # still some bugs involved
    # still some minor balancing tweaks needed
    # very little online activity by now (maybe it changes soon)

All in all, I strongly recommend everyone who likes CoH to give it a try. You wont regret it.

    Best,
    Hans

I liked it but I couldn't run it very well when playing more than 1v1 skirmishes. I can run CoH fine on medium settings, but with with Eastern Front the frame-rate is very low even on low settings. It seems the Soviet unit graphics don't change according to the settings.

In the end I uninstalled it because of the the low frame-rate even though I liked the Soviet faction very much.

I quite like it. The Soviets are unique, not just reskinned vanilla faction, they have a variety of units, not just "a few famous (like T-34) and nothing else".

What I don't like are the unit quotes. While I appreciate that they speak russian and not that russian english, the unit quotes seem to be extracted from russian version of CoH. When you will hear T-34 saying something about Sherman, or IS-2 saying something about Pershing, you'll know what I'm talking about. But other than that, I am more than satisfied with the whole mod.

Eastern Front mod is nice. I once made the wrong assumption that this mod will have a poor cosmetic/art detail but when I gave it a try, it was done on a professional level. I'm just waiting for the patch to allow retreat, just retreat and I'm good.

Copy my image code if you want Japan in a CoH expansion!

BTW, fuck balancing. Give us the Japanese, Russians, Italians and French in CoH, pls awesome Relic team.

I could never get it to work with Steam. Would love to try it though.

Is there any sort of manual install? Or is there only a launcher which ONLY looks for non-steam CoH exes?

I guess EF's balance is somewhat realistic. What, you think you can do a better job at holding off a horde of Russians charging and spraying PPSH in your direction? XD /joke

on a more serious note: It's a free mod, so we can't really complain. And it's fun at least for a couple of hours until you start recognizing the imbalances.
On your PC, the units seem to perform quite poorly. I think there might be something nearby the PC that is causing this problem for you. You may need a mirror to find out what it is. :D

Shouldn't this thread be in the Armoury?
Here's the thread in the Weapons Range (discussion of mods), where you can also read about the other mods available and discuss them...

Imho, EF is nohing but a win. It adds a new faction , does this quite well
( meanwhile )and even does some
balance tweaks to vanilla, in close teamwork with "pro" players,
which you cant expect from Relic anymore. In addition, you also
receive new reward units for your CoH factions.. and all that for FREE.

Is it worth it ? Crude question tbh.. Of course it is.

Great graphics, units, maps and close on balance. On wher against the cpu it is tough because of the amout of Ruskies to kill.
    I cant wait for Osteer.

Ive played only a few days but its fun.

Im trying to set up a LAN with my bro but when he goes to join it says we have different versions, yet we updated the game at the same time.
I think its just his pc as his net games are greyed out.
Ive no idea what this is any help so I can have a LAN.
