Was mentioned in another thread that there are 40k novels out there.
Anyone care to recommend or give a brief blurb about the ones they have read? In general how good are the novels, and how relevant to the overall 40k world are they, do they give a good overview of the universe?
There isnt a great overview right off but READ THE GAUNTS GHOSTS SERIES!!!! If you want to get more of a feel of different races and what not there are several short story books, but most of them are quite good and I have enjoyed pretty much all of the books I've read about 40k.
well if u like the inquisition and their secrets plus a actual good quality series book read the esienhorn trilogy and the inquisitor trilogy.
Actually the quality of the books is good, with 1 or too exceptions (as youd expect). Anything by Dan Abnett, Sandy Mitchell or Gav Thorpe is required reading. Storm of Iron is great, Farseer is the best William King around. Short story anthologies are always worth a look.
The Inquisition Wars Trilogy by Ian Watson is great, but not recommended if your new to 40k, as its written from old Rogue Trader (1st edition) days, and so has some of the whackyness and strangeness that doesnt feature anymore. Once you understand the 40k universe better its worth reading.

yeah, gaunt's ghosts are pretty good
i skipped the first two and i don't think i've missed much, they're very very readable, you can get through them in about a day

Warhammer 40.000:Space Marine by Ian Watson.
It's quite good imho, but I've only read Ian Watson novels of the WH40K universe so far. (Only they are available in Hungarian yet.)

I liked the Battlefleet Gothic books (Execution Hour and Shadow Point). It took me a while to get them but they're very good reads.

The Gaunt's Ghosts series are the best 40k books I've read so far. The rest seem like fan fics to me.

Inquisitor was a good 'un - I think that's an Ian Watson one, he used to provide a lot of the creative text for White Dwarf...

I've read a wide range of 40k novels, with the exception of the series that everyone else reads, such as gaunt's ghosts, space wolf series and the inquisitor series. Nothing personal, but I can only find myself with time to read 1 book before another landslide of work lands on me, so I avoid series.
I highly recommend Sandy Mitchell's books, as not only are they good 40k stuff, but there are quite a few laugh-out-loud bits too.
Soul Drinker and The Bleeding Chalice rock, as they give us a new perspective on marines and the Imperium, as does Fire Warrior (liked the game, though most don't).
The best place to start looking for good fiction is in the Inferno short story compilations. They're all gems, so if one doesn't take your fancy, then there are around 10 others that are bound to give you the angle and style that appeals to you.
I would recommend Dark Imperium, which is a compilation of 40K short stories. They are very entertaining. The advantage of having several short stories is that you can read them one by one whenever you feel like it. I have also been told by many people that Gaunt's Ghosts is worth reading.
I'm partial to Graham McNeil's work: Nightbringer, Storm of Iron, and Warriors of Ultramar. I'm currently reading his newest (The Ambassador), which is actually his first Warhammer Fantasy novel.
Barring that, anything by Dan Abnett tends to be good, and the Gaunt's Ghosts series is probably the most popular series of 40k books out there. I really like his Inquisitor trilogy as well, but based on other opinions I've heard I'd say those are an acquired taste.
I tend to think those two are the most accessible for someone new to 40k, but I haven't seen a bad suggestion on this thread.
Hearing that the Project Lead of DoW reads the fluff yet strengthens my faith on the success of this gameThe fluff gives a lot more depth to the 40K universe, more background and stuff that the game itself can never really tell.
Anyhow, Nightbringer was quite good, Storm Of Iron kicked ass (altough i would have liked to see something like the Grey Knights dropping from orbit in the end parts and kicking the Iron Warriors back to hell), Crusade to Armageddon was quite enjoyable and Soul Drinker was very good too.
Yes that reassures me as well, as the fluff is really the reason I am still wanting to play every weekend, It is such and interesting universe! Oh and yes I agree Nightbringer is great, and the parts of Storm of Iron I have read were really good but I havnt bought the book yet although many people have told me its really good.
