While the last two games I posted were open spanned maps that involved massive amounts of sheer carnage, here now are two 1v1's I did on more terrain-y maps where more in the way of smarts was able to be utilized.
First match is on Meeting Of The Minds against an SM player. This match took a bit before any actual combat was seen, but my intent for this game was not to mount an offensive, but rather to utilize the mountainous terrain to the IG's advantage, simply hole up in my area, and make the opposing SM player waste armies and vehicles on my position, turns out that while usually in DOW this would've been a bad move, this was fortunately exactly the right idea for this particular game. While frustratingly I see that had I decided to CS/GM rush him early game he would've been dead, I still did pretty well for myself. His main mistake was attempting to funnel his way into my base from where my critical location was at, and I think people can agree, being bottle necked by IG is game over, and that's pretty much what happened. It wasn't before long that I was able to get Bassy's and start Earthshaking his base at random intervals (which hurt his capability to mount offensives significantly, despite being able to afford Dreadnaught's, predators, AND land raiders amongst the typical Terminator squads and FC/Chaplain spam.) He told me near the end of the game that he surrendered, and to kill off his base, little did I know he had one more thing in mind, and while my army was assaulting him he did one last dropped dreadnaught rush on my base. It came pretty close, but thanks to the fact I had expanded beyond my initial area, and he hadn't, I was able to kill him off before he did me.
The second match is a 1v1 on Riverbed vs a fellow IG player. I love Riverbed, the tactical options presented to a good IG player on this map are too fun to pass up, the trench warfare pretty much can do nothing but work in their favor. I'll admit this wasn't much of a match, the guy didn't know about overwatching, shift building, and didn't have good micro, but I thought a few pretty fun things were demonstrated here (I take out a Baneblade with just a CS/Ogryn/Karsikin troop) such as using HWT's with heavy vulcans on the uphill sloaps, and also proving once again that being funneled by IG cannot do anything but end badly. I didn't even use Leman's for this round, and I only got a Baneblade in the last 3 minutes, I did most of this with just IG squads, CS/Ogryn/Karsikin and 3 bassy's. He quit and I think the final straw for him was taking out his second Baneblade with the CS/Ogryn/Karsikin troop having no support what so ever. COTMS is such a beautiful tool.
