Who else watched this as a kid? I only just found out they were turning it into a movie. I remember the Argo and the Black Tigers, the wave cannon.
Their is also a rumour that a movie called superdimentional fortress is coming out some time.

Shadow Chronicles which is already out is the other homeworldish series to be released as a hollywood style animation movie.

Some good stuff for us space fleet kinda peeps.

Medieval Real Time, Mount and Blade style Historical Combat.

Yeah, Superdimentional Fortress that you mentioned is most likely the Macross/Robotech live-movie adaption that is (afaik) in pre-/production . I can only hope they will keep it "true" alike the StarTrek relaunch from 2009 ^^.

I still haven't been able to see Shadow Chronicles due to the fact that I was frequently told that the animation style was rather outdated and crappy, but I will have to see for myself.

If you're up for anime space stuff, I strongly recommend watching stuff like Macrosso You Remember Love and Outlaw Star, for starters. There are several things that do fit to HW, somewhat and abstract. Macross 7 / Macross Frontier are also ones that could be watched, but they go very deep into ridiculous-mode sometimes.

I am sure there a lot more animation films/series that could feed the hunger .

OH OH. "Starship Operators", I think somebody uploaded it at youtube. I strongly recommend that one for Homeworldians lol.

It features awesome space battles, but not the Starwars PEWPEW ones, more the intelligent ones - like Uboot style. It is more of a small ship vs one tougher one, featuring true (almost hard) science and realism. If you can ignore the heavy anime fanservice moments, you will certainly like it. Ironically, I never knew this series existed before, which is hilliarious for me, because it features what I had written in my HW fic long before.

No really, Starship Operators has my blessings .

But as for the Star Blazer movie of 2011, I FREAKING ENVY JAPAN'S MOVIE INDUSTRY. ffs, this could be used for Homeworld.

Will check out starship operators. Gotta love the straight to the point titles. The japanese call star blazers "space battleship yamato". Very matter of fact.

Heh I guess Blazers was the attempt to make it sound cooler, but don't ask me on the taste ^^.

Well, that's the ugliest starship design I've ever seen...

It's 'ugly' because it's based on a WWII Japanese battleship. The Starcraft Yamato cannon also gets its name similarly.

Obvious influences from other movies including the BSG TV series.

Perhaps this thread could be a 'Which movies are HW-styled?' discussion point?

That sounds like a good idea. This thread won't have much life in its original topic.

However, I think it might be an even better idea to start a fresh thread with the intention to discuss HW-styled movies. Neo-BSG and the classic BSG certainly have qualities of Homeworld, and the classic BSG directly inspired the game. Other shows/movies like Star Trek with their sense of wonder and exploration certainly have made their mark on Homeworld, and there are HW-styled episodes, particularly in DS9, where they cope with tricky topics like war and the sort.

I think the chance for this thread is if someone can draw direct ties between the themes in Star Blazers and Homeworld. Otherwise, start a new thread for that topic.

Hardly an excuse. It's like the designers though all a seafaring ship needs to look like a spacefaring one is to stick on a few antennae and glowy lights. They didn't even bother removing the waterline markings or the bulbous bow.

You want a good example of seafaring -> spacefaring, look at the Taiidan Support Frigate, which obviously draws inspiration from aircraft carriers without looking like it'd be more at home in the water. This thing is just plain lazy.

I believe the lore went something like this "Aliens bombard planet after wiping out most of earths fleet. Oceans boil away. Humans survive far underground and are able to discover some new tech based on the aliens own but cant get it off-world to build anything with it (any near surface construction is blasted away). They discover massive hunk of metal near the surface that aliens have so far ignored (the Yamato). Humans take the opportunity and secretly re-fit the old wreck into the most technically advanced space ship EVAAAA!"

And that's why it looks like that.

Anyway its a nice conceit so the Japanese writers could raise again the mighty Yamato battleship of their (propaganda filled) childhoods... in space!

About as plausible as rebuilding the HMS Hood, considering Yamato's magazines exploded as she sank.
