Returning player.

    Returning player.

So, I recently came back to the game after somewhat of a hiatus, and have decided to begin playing as the Eldar. Unfortunately, I was met with the crushing realization, that I had no idea what the hell I was doing, and was promptly chewed out by my teammates for being a "Failmate". Anyone have some tips for a semi-beginner?

Hmm, I may have been a bit too vague. When I said I didn't know what the hell I was doing, I meant as Eldar. The link you posted was great, but it mostly covers the basics of the game. I was looking for tips for getting better with Eldar, such as Build orders and the like.

Are we talking before or after the "There is only war" patch?

Also, have you played since before or after the release of Chaos Rising?

I'm talking post Eternal War. And I've played since Beta. But since I returned, I find myself getting wiped fairly easily.

Yeah, the wave of minutiae changes has really shaken things up over the last several patches. You'll probably find (in a VERY broad, overarching sense with all skills taken into account), that Eldar are near the bottom in terms of power right now. In my opinion, the power totem pole goes (again, this is very broad and with the entire range of TS taken into account): Orks > Tyranids > Space Marines = Chaos > Eldar. If you've been gone for even the last 4 or so months, Eldar have gone from almost the very top to the very bottom of the pole. All this said, I don't believe that the discrepancy in power between all the races is very large.

To start things off though, which commander do you use? A general pointer (regardless of your commander choice) is to begin with x2 GUs ---> Banshee and avoid the first engagement until you can buy the Aspect of Banshee. From there it depends on your commander and your opponent. A general rule of thumb now is that melee units scale really well into T2, and most T2+ melee units can trash vehicles pretty easily. This is actually the primary reason for Eldar being lower on the totem pole right now. Wraithguard are extremely vulnerable to scaling melee units, Falcons are wtfpwnt by T2 melee/AV, and Wraithlords don't preform particularly well for cost in comparison to other walkers. This leaves your T2+ tactics to usually be speccing your commander and T1 troops, and building up a steady mass of Warpspiders to complement your Brightlance.

If you don't really have a dedicated Eldar commander, I'd probably suggest either the Warlock or Farseer for being the easiest to play this patch.
