    AridMonks Descent into Bankrupcy

Hello Forumers, after a 5 year break from the wonderful universe of Warhammer 40k, I am back, and back with a vengeance.

Whilst out shopping during the Christmas break, I stumbled across my local GW in Aberdeen, and, since the GF had dragged me round 5,000 clothes and make up shops, decided to get her back and went inside. After speaking to the Manager, Scott (who is the friendliest guy in the world btw) decided to buy myself a Space Marine battleforce, just to keep me occupied, and maybe start re-integrating myself slowly back into the hobby.

It sat in my living room, still in the bag, for two weeks.

After stumbling upon it once more, I opened it up and looked at the sprues longingly, eyeing up the pieces. Tomorrow, I decided, I would assemble these.

The next day however, I instead decided to look at the Forge World store, to see what they had these days.

    2 days later, this arrived...

    That is :
    2x Red Scorpion Shoulder Pads
    1x Red Scorpion Terminator Pads
    1x Brass Etch Red Scorpion
    1x Red Scorpions Symbols
1x Mk3 Iron Armour (soooo cool)
1x Red Scorpions Veterans Upgrade Pack
    1x Red Scorpions Vanguard Veterans
    The Battleforce from before
And 2 (yes 2) Severin Loth and retinue

I also bought a Tauros Venator but that doesn't really fit here so meh

I also (a while back now) ordered some of MisterJustins excellent temple theme bases, and have ordered a few more so I actually have something to base these dudes with.

I also went back to GW and along with paints etc, picked up the new SW codex, which is really rather nice, and will base these guys around that.

Theory goes that these guys are from a clan based world much like the Space Wolves are, and as such use a similar force organisation etc etc, but I'll post a fluff thread in the other forum when I can get all my thoughts and theories all typed out.

So, this purpose of this thread is to actually keep me motivated enough to see this through to its end- I've decided I want 2 full companies of White Scorpions.

    Eek.

I'll post up some pics of Severin Loth soon, I have cleaned him up and undercoated him, just need to slap some paint on him and his cronies soon.

    Thanks for looking!

So, over the last couple of days started work on the Characters for my army- only really have the chaplain up to any sort of reasonable state-

Picture of his Crozius handle, tried to green stuff a long purity seal/scripture round the handle.

Sorry 'bout the shitty pics, will fish out my digi cam soon enough.

    C+C welcome

@Ewokz, the head is from the old vampire counts skeleton Sprue, it's one of the options for the top of the banner pole

The crozius is one the Chaos Warriors champion weapons, a hooked mace, with two of the imperial Guard Tank Sprue Aquilas stuck together, cut in half and glue to each side.

Thanks for the kind words guys, still need to add a book to him attached by chain (he will be known in the army as a Keeper of Oaths, so will have to keep them somewhere!) and get his jump pack all cleaned up and sorted.

    Stay tuned!!

I have not seen how those Red Scorpions dudes look yet, looking forward to it!
And that Chaplain is really nice, but where do you plan to glue the book? On/under the jetpack would be kinda...well not a good idea.

Sorry about the non-updates, been busy with fitness training and work (plus Battlefield BC Vietnam got its claws into me), so not had much time for leetle menz. But had a spare evening this evening and so thought I would paint up one of my army's scouts.

First time using Testors dull cote and learned a few things:

1- Wait until after to do metals, makes em look utter shite.
2- This stuff is bloody vicious, seriously seriously use in a ventilated area, did mine in my bathroom due to the lovely Scottish weather, lets just say I needed to sit down for a while.
3- Use in constant sweeping strokes, I hesitated for a second on the back of the mini and I could see the instant build up, luckily it went away but something to be aware of.
4- Makes everything bar metals look awesome.

Also used weathering powders for the first time, having a real hard time getting them to stick where i want them using white spirit, does anyone have any suggestions? Hard to see in the pics but used it up to the knees fairly heavily but it all seemed to come off when I used the white spirit

Overall I'm pretty pleased with myself, he's the first mini I have completed in about 3 years I reckon, and in that time I have become more patient, and the results show

    Anyway, enough TL;DR, PICTURES!!

And one with a flash, just in case it makes a difference...

    Need to build a lightbox...

    Anyhoo, C+C welcome!!

    Very nice paint job!
The years of patience are really showing off
Now paint that chappy and I'll be a happy camper!

First I have to say that I really like what you've done with my "Ruined Temple" bases. A very unique take on these!

The model looks great too and I'm especially impressed with the hair. Good job there. The wee tiny scorpion on his pauldron doesn't hurt either

@SocietySoldier- Thanks, going to wait a bit to do the Chaplain, going to build up my skill on rank and filers and then go onto him, rather fond of him and dont want to do the best I can on him.

@misterjustin- Yeah the base took a while until I was happy, made it quite busy cos he is a scout, hes s'posd to be scouting The red lines etc will be explained in some fluff I'm typing up. The little scoprion was fun to do actually, going to incorporate it into a few ala the hydra mark for the ALpha Legion.

Dude, purple and black is sexay. If I may make a humble suggestion.... Use a gold accent. The eagle, the dark angels bits... Make em' gold.

BTW... Master Level basing. Love it.

No gold on the scouts, did contemplate it, but couldnt really get them to fit, too many shiiny bits for a scout

Yeah pleased with the base myself, need to keep it consistent now :/

Long time no updates, been busy travelling abroad for work which has left me very little time for me.

Got back though, and decided to sit down and work out what I want for my Army.

Came up with some ideas for my Assault squad which will accompany the Chaplain (keeper of oaths), basically these guys have been deemed to have sinned or failed in their duty, and are busted back to a low level footslogger, and are assigned to the front lines in the most dangerous squad until the chaplain decrees them to have redeemed themselves in the eyes of the Emperor, or die in battle, whatever comes first. They are whipped up into a religious fury by their Keeper and will throw themselves at the enemy (which covers the headstrong and beserk charge rules quite nicely i thought ) They will count as Skyclaws on the table.

With this in mind I made up a test model, using a Chaos warrior helmet and a supposed-to-be-simple-turned-out-to-be-complex leg reposition. Want the whole squad to look like fanatics, throwing themselves at the enemy.

Also made up a Devastator, always thought these dudes looked far too puny, so using the FW Mk3 Armours to bulk them up and make them look like really really heavy weapon troops.

The helmet is an idea shamelessly pinched from Lamenter over on the BnC forums.

Currently building up a couple of tacticals (grey hunters) in full WYSIWYG, and will post them shortly.

    C+C good people!!

Well, seems I've been well and truly bitten by the bug

Decided to do some work on a tactical squad, get some practice on for doing other (cooler) squads, and so knocked this Joe-Nobody up, equipped him with a phobos pattern bolter:

Then I started feeling adventurous, and with the sarge, decided to sculpt some custom leg greaves for him, and kit him out with a FW Vet head and the Bionic Arm which is magnetised in case I wanna swap it:

Aaaand then I got over-confident, and for the Honour Bearer (counts as wolf standard, each squad will have one with its own personal heraldry etc in flowing script and with battlefield tokens), and did a leg reposition, weapon swap, fancy rock base and am mid-way through sculpting the pennant part of the banner:

And so now I look at the sarge and Joe-Nobody and think "Well they suck". May go back and re-do, but probably won't, due to resin being a pain in the ass to remove when its glued.

    So, C+C purdy pleez

Okay, so here he is now (took him into work to do some more on him). I'm bloody determined to get him finished in time for the competition, entered about 12 and not finished one yet!!

Tried a new (for me) technique on the force weapon, what do you guys think?

Starting to work on my Devastators, using Mk3 Armour to try and bulk em up, make enm look like proper heavy weapon troops. Will post up some pics of my finished Loth when there is some decent light to take photos.

Very pleased with the gold in particular, never done gold before!!

    Stay tuned

  25. #25
I really like the grey of the eagle on his left pauldron. Sharp work all over - and great base, of course

  26. #26
ditta what mrj said. I'm not good at providing suggestions/criticism, but this guy doesn't need any. He looks great.

I really like both pauldrons, that horned skull & scroll, as well as the book above his head are awesome! Great purple battle axe too.

You've really mastered the fine details on Sev. The gold trim on the shoulder and knee guards is a nice touch, and the blue is really clean yet not dull/boring. Thanks for sharing your hard work with us.

I love that dread, just so vicious looking. Keen to see what happens when it gets painted.

Your librarian is very impressive. The force weapon looks great, I really love the shimmer effect. You may hate painting blue, but it looks good.

Wow 9 months and no updates, jeez, life has been unkind to me of late.

Anyway, been travelling a lot recently, and have been working on this Emperors Champion in hotel rooms and on trains, I did manage to finish it for last weekends 40k birthday celebrations, but waited until I could get my hands on a digital camera for some decent pics, then decided that my iphone did a better job, so go figure.

Anyhoo, pics. Hope you like him!

Oh God Dimmy now I cant get that out of my head

The model was released back in 2000 as part of GW's 25th anniversary of the company proper, I picked it up on eBay for 4 quid late last year, so I didn't design it. I still like it, even though it kinda does look like he is waving his "Big Black Sword" around.

    NECROOOOOO

So Dark Angels came out. I was completely prepared to pass this over, until I saw the new Deathwing kit, then my OOH SHINY gland kicked in and now I am doing a 2000pt Deathwing army.

The new Belial though, he is kinda sucky, and looks like he has a rod stuck up his butt. Cue my version:

Basis is Lugft Huron from FW, with the head, cape, arms and kitbashed weapon from the Deathwing kit. Banner is still to be decided on, but expect freehand aplenty, as well as a kick ass base.

    Stay tuned!

The spear thing needs more sharp objects/blades, three is just not enough.

Your kitbashing puts mine to shame sir, I may have to look at utilising some green stuff to really get mine looking as good.

Say what you want about the new miniature Belial and the 1st model to be made of Belial, but I do not agree with you. Anyway, your kit bashed model looks great nonetheless.

Wow, i like that conversion quite a bit more than the model GW has put out! Where did you get that Lion shoulder pad from? Is it from FW? 'Cause it fits very nicely for the sons of the lion.

@Lok: Comes with the Huron model. Unfortunately its attached to the Lightning claw, but a little sawing and hollowing soon sorted that!

Welcome back dude, where you been hiding?

Conversion's looking really good. I wasn't too sure about the weapon, but it's grown on me. Go to agree with your assessment of the new Belial model though; his legs are just so wrong. They make him look like he needs to go pee pee.
