Suggest a song

There was a thread like this a while back and I really liked it. So I decided I will start up another one with our now entirely appropriate forum board .

Suggest a single song to the community (And only one). I'm sure all you music lovers have many songs you'd like to share, but if you could pick just one, what would it be?

Just give the name of the song and the artist and (entirely optional, but it would be nice) an embedded youtube or other link so that we can listen to the song right here.

I'll start, It's hard for me to choose and I'm sure this isn't my favorite song of all times, but I really like it:

I like this song (and the album associated with it) that it's been referenced in my user title and avatar for over a year (and even Christmas-y versions have appeared for the past two Christmases.) Hell, part of this song is even the ringtone on my cellphone. The entire album is amazing, though... it's a concept album done right.

Doing this again I think I'm still going to have to go for some Celtic music; there's not nearly enough of that around these days. My recommendation, then, goes to Niel Gow's Lament for the death of his second wife. They say when his Margaret died, he couldn't bear to touch his fiddle for weeks.. and when he finally did, this wonderful song was the first thing to come out of it. Being able to transmute that much sadness into a thing of such beauty is truly a wonderful gift.

As for artists, Gow was obviously the original but there aren't a lot of recordings from the 1700s. I haven't had too many compare to, so I'll just say that Alasdair Fraser's performance of it on Legacy of the Scottish Fiddle, Vol. 1 is remarkable. Of the Youtube performances I could find, I think this is probably the best:

It's gotta be Pink Floyd. Not listened to them In a while, but they still stand out as one of the most influential bands on my own life so far. And what better song than the first song I heard by them, and the song that got me hooked! It really has a brilliant opening. Made me take up guitar as well!



Oh, and Croax, I really liked that! Never heard of The Protomen. Checking them out on youtube at the moment. Might go find out where I can get a hold of the album.

Lebanese Blonde by Thievery Corporation. I loved the Middle-Eastern-inspired feel of the song, the steady rhythm and the breathy vocals.

Here's a neat one: Vidda by Ole Edvard Antonsen. From his album Landscapes a couple years back, this one is inspired by the Norwegian tundra. My family used to vacation there every fall: hiking, picking berries etc. While I think some of the other songs on the album better capture the sparseness and solitude of that landscape, this triumphant song feels like a great celebration of its majestic views and is still my favourite among them.


@#20: Very interesting song. I get this odd feeling it's not finished at the end, though. It's from that Ghost in the Shell anime? Off to blogspot I go.

Magos, it actually flows into the next song in the OST Rokki-wa doko, which is why it doesn't sound like it has a satisfying ending.

I can't seem to get this song out of my head lately. It feels kind of like a Clint Mansell score, but all the magic is done with a single cello and looping.

Hey, that's a pretty neat trick with the cello. I've been doing the same thing with my keyboard for the last 6 years, but it's interesting to see technology interfacing with the instruments to create the same effect.

Oh wow... I Autotune overdosed in about 20 seconds.

Then I washed my ears out with Ennio Morricone's wonderful Cinema Paradiso main theme. Gorgeous, relaxing piece by one of the all-time great movie composers. This Youtube performance* was one I'd never heard before, and while it takes a little while to get to the music, it pays off big time. Yo-Yo Ma is just great in it.

So last night LCD Soundsystem played their last farewell concert, and so one of the genuinely great bands of the 00s split up and I never managed to catch them live. In their honour here is what is sometimes my favorite song of all time played live. THere are some audio glitches earlier but they clear up
