    Avatars...need more

Since we're not allowed to have custom avatars, I searched through the list and found one I liked. then I noticed that it's being used by another, more recognized member. I change my avatar, later noticing that that one is also already used. so I ask...more avatars please?

OK, there are currently about 50 avatars available. There's a total of 4600 registered members. Unless you want to make 4600 avatars (in which case you might as well use custom ones), multiple users will end up having the same avatar. You can express yourself through your sig and your posting style.

my sig only shows once a thread. After that the easiest way to identify is by avatar. when you have two or three people using the same one, it can get confusing. I'm not asking for 4600 different avatars, I'm asking for about 150 instead of 50. some people may enjoy having the same avatar as another person, but I don't. and no avatar is just as bad.

Surely the easiest way to identify someone is by their name...

Unless your'e an extremely visual person like me, who hardly ever even reads the persons name. I go by the avatar.

I'll perhaps get to work and slap together a pile of 40k related avatars for dyn to add to the pile. Also some avatars based on the work of various gallery members.

for the 400th time no 40k content will be used on this forum until GW finally decides to give us some guidelines. That is why no skins or avatars for the the moment because I'd rather work on a new 40k skin and avatars than older homeworld ones.

I didn't know you did things Hand. :jk:
I think the amount of avatars is fine, although we could use a better Interceptor one, but that's just my opinion.
My Interceptor is better than your Interceptor.

"until GW finally decides to give us some guidelines"

I'll make some because they may soon be able to be used. The odds that they'll go against any guidelines we ever get are pretty slim.

That might not be in some time, since GW's pretty strict on their copyrights.

In any case, the DoW Forum regulars are going berserk over the notion that we might get WH40K avatars and skin(s)
Thus, the initiative of our most honored Vijil is very welcomed as it will allow them to be implemented with godspeed
Yes, we WH40K freaks are pretty impatient. Who would've thought after watching a game of WH40K, eh ?

    GW Legal...

    Hi Guys,

I appreciate your interest in using GW imagery (for all sorts of things as well as Avatars), and promise I am working on this. Avatars are a new area for Games Workshop, so it is taking a little longer than we may have hoped, so please be patient.

Ionfish, Soulblighter, UberJumper - Can you check your mail please about this topic.

    Thanks,

    Nelson.

so no custom avatars.... well that stinks =\. maybe there will be custom avatars in the future. Maybe you can submit a avatar that youd like to use, for approval, and then have a mod put it on? well whatever lol.

Drako, it's a server bandwidth issue... that's why custom avatars are reserved for longtime community members and people who have performed special services (for the community or in a dark closet for an admin).

It's not [necessarily] because they just want to spite you or because there's some abject fear of what you'd pick.

IC, i got a little groovy avatar id love to have, and i could provide a link, so it would be offsite, and you wouldnt have to store it on your server. However if that is still going to be a bandwidth issue then thats kewl. Ill go ahead and live with my groovy ion fig ^^.

Hey Drako, don't feel too bad, I’ve been around since 1999, built half-dozen sites or more for this community, but just haven’t posted enough on this particular set of forums to warrant custom avatar rights. Hopefully I’ll get custom avatar rights or the Universe site avatar in the near future. :kami:

Anyway, I agree that custom avatars are bandwidth intensive and can take up allot of space, and I’m sure our fairly open avatar policy will change over at the Universe with the next upgrade. We had people hosting like 1mb animated avatars and kept putting them back up at several times, which was rather harsh to the dialup users and the various servers they where leeching lots of bandwidth from.

Hmm If it is a offsite avatar, there should be a way to link off to the image. That in-turn would only use the bandwidth on the page that is hosting that picture. The image doesnt have to be on the server. Iv had alot of other forums where there was a way to type in your own link, and it would just display that picture if it existed. Now additionally it had the option to download the image using that link, but that isnt important, because all im lookin for is to link to the offsite avatar, instead of having it on the forum server. It would take the same bandwidth as when someone displays a image in there text when posting a message. Well anyways if that is still to difficult, and/or would just cause problems, then its something i and many others would be able to do without.

Well you’re still leeching and-or using the bandwidth of another service with or without their permission for external avatars. Including if that particular place gets bogged down or goes offline it can consequently slow down the loading of pages for users where that avatar is being used. :kami:

Ya i agree about the taste thing. Its a shame for those of us that have kewl and unique avatars that wont ever be used. That being said, it really doesnt bother me.

Oh and Sabin not sure what you think your thinking.. But of course the page will continue to load if a avatar isnt there, but that isn't taking up bandwidth on the forum. Its loading from another site, which means the loading time is loading time for the image on the specified page, so the load is on the server the image exists on, not on the server that is mearly holding a frame, for that image to load in.

Well the entire point that was discussed is essentially finding out if we can get avatars one way or another. Both of those points have been answered.
