Best homeworld 2 texture/graphics mod out there?

    Best homeworld 2 texture/graphics mod out there?

    Hi all. I am wanting to play through Homeworld 2 with some new textures and graphics. Is there a mod out there that makes everything look a little better? Like the ships, and even space itself. I know a lot of games out there have mods that totally change all the textures and graphics to make the game look way better.

    Also, it would be nice if there was a sound upgrade mod as well. Anyone know what exact mods I might need for this?

    Well I googled a bit and all it comes up with is all manner of BSG mods. Is there a link to it on this site somewhere?

    Anyone happen to have a link? Or is it just the BSG mod and it doesn't change the original game? Also is their a sound mod for the original game? The voice acting seems to be pretty horrid.

    uhm, I'm posting with my phone so I cant put in a link, but you can find the bsg mod on www.moddb.com.You can search for hw2 mods under the downloads tab. Look for the shader2 version of BSG. With these shaders you can even make the vanilla game look brilliant. It does however remove badges. That and the increased graphical horsepower neccesary to run it are the only drawbacks. Hmm, maybe also if you can't extract the shaders from bsg... You need rudementary hw2 modding tools and knowledge for this.

    As far as I know, there is no sound mod, as I would think the average modder doesn't have a recording studio and better voice actors than those used in the game in his bedroom. I certainly don't.

    Thanks for the info. But as for the sound aspect, I think they just take sound bytes from other things that sound better and replace the old ones. I think that's all they do.

    Also, no one has ever just made an easily installed texture/graphics mod for the original game? I'm not a real big galactica fan so I don't think I'll be playing that one. I mean I know it takes a heck of a lot of time and effort, but there are a lot of dang mods out there for this game so I figured by now someone would have made a fairly easily installable mod for the original homeworld 2 storyline.

    Wow all that modding being done and no mods for the original game.

    there used to be a lot actually most are dead and buried but a few of them moved to hw2. despite having the source code hw1 was a bitch to work with.

    ORCA:The brilliant thing is that he seems to be talking about HW2. I'm trying to tell him that he doesn't need to play BSG, just use the shaders from that. Nobody bothered to put these into a nice 'n easy package because any modder can do it the hard way.

    Strider:

    Orca's talking about Homeworld 2 2.0 which is a Homeworld 2 mod.

    http://forums.relicnews.com/showthre...isual-Overhaul

    There's also a Homeworld 2 Homeworld Mod which is trying to do Homeworld in Homeworld 2 engine.

    There was also some people reworking in HW2 2.0 in this thread:
    http://forums.relicnews.com/showthre...isual-Overhaul

    Also for the people that didn't like the SVN I have also a link on Megaupload with the data folder in the last Homeworld 2 video in my You Tube Channel.

    For some reason the work on the mod was halted some months ago.

    EDIT: Ohh, I'm so slow posting...

    Uber:I know of HW 2 2.0. It doesn't look like that's finished, like krnt says, so I'd say the next best thing is a simple shader replacement, no? As for homeworld in the HW2 engine, I don't know about that. Do you know where?

  14. #14
    Just grab the shaders from the B5 Mod where they started out.

    Requiem War. Dead and gone. So close to completion, too. Probably the biggest loss the HW2 modding community's ever suffered.

    strider that is basically what hw 2.0 is most of it is the shader update. use the snv to get it throw it in the folder with al the big files and then use the command -overridebigfile and bam you got updated gfx

    Yes, is easy as the Commander said.
    The good points about this last version are that all the hods have been updated including the megaliths so there is almost no graphic bug as far as I remember.
    The only con is the lack of badges.

    Orca, do you know of a more comprehensive guide to doing that? Please forgive my noob ignorance, but this is my first modding experience. I am willing to learn though. Perhaps someone can tell me which files to download and what folder to stick them in? From reading this thread, it sounds like that is what I need to do. Get some of the BSG files, and replace the correct files in my original homeworld folder with them. Does that sound about right?

    mmmph been a while since i have done this but download tortoise SVN install it. follow the directions on hw 2.0 to get the svn to work for you. now download nad install unfbig which i have mirrored on filefront. when yolu run it click open folder. the folder you should open is the container folder that has all the mod files beneath it So NAMEOFMOD is the folder you tell it to open and beneath that will be all the mod files. now click create big files. also make sure you change the output directory somewhere close the hard drive root as there is a character limit that will cause it not to work.

    it should work and if you want better advice and tutorials you need to go to the hw2 modding section

    Ok thanks to everyone in this thread. I'll probly do like you say orca and get on over to the actual HW2 mod forum. What you are describing sounds like its well beyond my abilities. I got a little ways into it and by that time I had a million questions already. Since someone has restarted the Homeworld 2.0 mod again, I'll probably just wait for its release. I know its been a long time in coming already, but from what I hear it was very close to completion before it was abandoned so perhaps this new person will get it finished.

    I want to ask if is possible to disable LOD in HW2. Also if some1 know commands explanations like this:
    for PLAYERCFG.LUA

    FXOptions = {
    lightLOD = 3, -- LIGHTING LOD (0 – OFF, 1 – LOW, 2 – MEDIUM, 3 – HIGH)
    autoLOD = 1, -- GEOMETRY SCALING (0 – OFF, 1 – ON)
    shadows = 1, -- SHADOWS (0 – OFF, 1 – ON)
    hyperspaceQuality = 1, -- HYPERSPACE QUALITY (0 – LOW, 1 – HIGH)
    goblins = 1, -- DETAIL GEOMETRY (0 – LOW, 1 – HIGH)
    damageFX = 1, -- DAMAGE FX LOD (0 – LOW, 1 - HIGH)

    for:

    VideoOptions = {
    textureQuality = 0,
    minLOD = 0,
    maxLOD = 5,
    shadowResolution = 0,
    anisotropicFiltering = 0,
    ... thx

    To disable the LODs you need to disable them manually in every ship file.

    Had a couple more unrelated questions though, since this thread is pretty much over with anyway.

    1.How many official (made by the developer) patches did homeworld 2 get? I looked around but all I could see was one. Seems like by now, they would have released a few more.

    2. I read on one of these threads that someone was making a mod that made homeworld 1 look like homeworld 2. Sort of like updating homeworld 1. Made me wonder: If they were able to successfully do that, would you then be able to apply the finished "Homeworld 2.0" mod, to homeworld 1? Seems like you would be able to. I know, I know, keep dreaming.

    the hw2 to hw 1 conversion mod i always got errors with. and yes it was just the one patch

  26. #26
    @Krnt can you help me how to do it?(just quick guide) How many parameters i need to set?(shadows geometry etc..) thx

  27. #27
    So if Homeworld 1 were upgraded to look like homeworld 2, then you could use homeworld 2.0 on homeworld one? Theoretically I mean. If all that actually happened, which it hasn't.

    it is a theoretical possibility, hw 1 was made open source, as much as relic had the right to do anyway, so if you know C or C+ you could update the graphics engine to be on par with homeworld 2's. however back porting the models is a lot more complicated than drag and drop without altering the engine since hw1 does not have shader model support at all and only a few cpu optimizations, mmx; 3dnow.

    Some thread I read said that someone was working on bringing HW1 up to look just like HW2. Once that had happened, it seems like it would just take a bit of messing with, to apply HW2.0 to HW1. Which would just be an astounding accomplishment IMO. Taking a game from 10 years ago and making it look modern.
