    power needed for graphics card

im currently interested in upgrading my computer so im able to play the DoW2 game series i used the ' Can you run it? ' website to find what i need so i can play them on recommended specs and the only problem is i need to upgrade my graphics card , but i also know that some graphics cards need more powerful power supplies and am wondering how i can find out how much power certain graphics cards need , atm im thinking of getting the ASUS 512MB RADEON HD 5670 GDDR5 HDMI would anyone know what kind of power supply i would need?
Knowledge is power , hide it well.
thnx for the spelling mistake storm!!! :)

Post what cpu you are using (if you don't know run a dxdiag) and open your case and post what's standing on the metal box on the very top.

you can use pretty much anything to power that gpu. it maxes out at about 60w draw easily suppliable by a single pcie slot. I'd say in this day and age, there's almost no psu in existence that cannot support that card.

You mentioned that you have no computer skills.

Will you be alright fitting a new graphics card to your system?

  10. #10
ah good , also i just realized that the graphics card isn't low profile since my PC is a slim line so now ive opted for this one http://nexus-t.co.uk/viewproduct.asp?Id=167974

would my power supply still be ok for this one?

  11. #11
Yes it will be fine, however if you have the money at any point like £30, go to novatech's website and get one of their gaming power supplies, best power supplies vs price you can get I think. Then you won't have to worry about this again.

Also If your hoping to play Dawn of war 2 on the highest settings with no lag what so ever, I would get a better graphics card but that's my opinion

Low Profile does limit your choice quite a bit - I did a quick google search and found this on amazon which is more than worth the £11 premium over the 5450.

  14. #14
That was the one i was going to suggest but you found it cheaper :P

And it may be cheaper still elsewhere - be sure to shop around.

  16. #16
right so from what ive gathered my PC can power any of these low profile cards ?
and there's is a limit to how powerful these card can get due to being low profile ?

hmmm depending on how big my paycheck is this month i may just make my PC bigger with a case , power supply ect , just in case i actually do get a surprisingly big pay check could anyone give me a list of a graphics card power supply and case with a budget of £200?

also i went into the nexus shop and found http://nexus-t.co.uk/systemdet.asp?Id=98329

is this a good investment ???

Personally I wouldn't invest too much into this PC and rather save for a new one.

I've never understood people's obsession with special (read expensive) cases. Just get whatever you want without spending too much money on it, unless you wanna drag it to LAN parties constantly and OC the hell out of it pretty much every case works for you. As for PSUs I can recommend BeQuiet! and Corsair, something between 400W and 500W should provide enough power if you wanna use it with a new PC as well.

And no I wouldn't really say that's a good deal. For ~600€ you can get a sandy bridge + mainboard + 4gb ram + 6850 + case + PSU. I'd wait on buying it though, the sandy bridge CPUs are currently bugged (on a sidenote has intel released anything on when they are planning to release the new mainboard chips to fix it?)

i had no choice on the case because the PC was given to us . yeah , i though it would be better just ordering the pieces and then getting someone to build it . the problem with that is i have no idea what im looking for and also my m8s were telling me some parts are compatible with others ?

Graphic card manufacturers supply the system requirements for their cards so you won't have to ask you can just check.
The HD5670 does not need a PCI connector to it so it will do with only the power from the PCI-e slot. So you'll need around a 400W PSU for the HD 5670 card.
About building a new PC some parts are compatible like hard drives and maybe memory but that depends on what build you are taking. If you take DDR2 RAM or DDR3 RAM.
But a CPU is most likely not compatible with new components.

  21. #21
see i can understand bits of what your saying but my knowledge goes only as far as GCSE level in terms of PC's and that was just in using excel, publisher etc so even if i did take a look at the requirements on each part that would be the same as me opening a book in dutch . i do apologize in advance for the inconvenience . oh and what is DDR2 ram and DDR3 ??

That's your memory, basically DDR3 is newer and better. Most boards will tell you what they take but I wouldn't buy anything else than a DDR3 capable board these days.

Building a PC really is not hard, just pick a CPU you wanna use, get a suitable mainboard, buy some ram (99% chance that it will use DDR3 these days), a SATA HDD, and a PCIE graphics card.

ok ive found a site that i can put together my own computer but my problem is , how do i know im picking parts that are superior my own system atm? i have no idea what the names mean apart from on graphics cards the gentleman at the nexus shop taught me just about.

  24. #24
You get those guys to write down the order of parts before you do anything. And then post it here along with the price they are charging

    Lolz that won't work together.
If you pick an AMD CPU then get a board with an AMD Socket AM3. You took an Intel Socket 1155. Now that only works with the current Intel Sandy Bridge processors.
Also I'd pick something a little better then an AMD Radeon HD 5570 I'd take an HD 5770 atleast since those are also really cheap and a lot better.
But I would not pick a case which has a build in Power Supply Unit(PSU). I would take a case without a PSU and get a 500W PSU from a decent brand like Corsair, CoolerMaster, Antec, Enermax, Zallman or Thermalright.
But the rest of the build is good.
Just take a different AMD board. One with the 785G chipset or the 870 chipset is good enough for you. I prefer the 870 chipset since it has SATA-600 and can have USB 3.0

It's not just that, you need a better PSU, 300W is too low if you wanna get a better graphics card (and I'd seriously suggest switching the 5570 into a 5850 or better 6850). Also get an SATA HDD, I didn't even know that they still produce ide drives....^^

i seriously have no idea what im doing !! none of the components make any sense this is becoming alot harder than it seems

    PHP Code:

    Storage     Samsung Spinpoint F3 1TB
    $69.99
    Asus DRW
    -24B1ST     $19.99

You also forgot to budget for an operating system.

For you, it might be better to go for a pre-built system....but £400 is a tight budget for a gaming PC. Something like this comes in at £440 when you add the OS - but there is quite a jump in what you can get if you push on to the £500-£600 price range.

Edit: are you in the uk or the US?

  30. #30
im living in the UK . just one quick question , what was wrong with the £500 gaming PC i posted earlier? i mean the man in the shop said the parts can be changed as you want them seeing as they order the parts to the store and build it before its sent to you .

  31. #31
    go here: http://www.novatech.co.uk/novatech/pc/gaming/

there all good for the their price, up to you how much you want to spend.

Novatech are a good place to buy stuff

Get atleast a 450W PSU since that will save you to get a new one once you decided your graphics card is to low and you want a new one.
550W is the minimum for a dual graphics card build.
But don't get a GeForce GTS450 since it is to slow for games to play nicely. A Radeon HD 5770 can play any game smoothly. But yes an HD 6850 is better but also costs a lot more.
I made you this build. On Novatech.
    Code:
    CPU: AMD Athlon II X4 640 Quad-Core £64.15
    Motherboard: Gigabyte GA-MA770T-UD3 £51.05
    RAM: Corsair XMS3 TwinX 4GB (2x2GB) DDR3 1333MHz £33.32
    Hard Drive: Samsung Spin Point F3 1TB SATA-300 £34.15
Graphics Card: Sapphire ATI Radeon HD 5770 1GB £87.49
Power Supply: Corsair CX 500W £38.91
Case: Antec Three Hundred Black £41.66
    Total ex vat: £350.73
Total with vat ex shipping £420.88
That is a build that will last for a few years without upgrading anything.

That comes to £500 when you include the OS and you will need to add a further £20 for an optical drive, but it is a good build and I can vouch for the 5770 - its the card I use.

Dammit forgot the optical drive. Well any optical drive will do. It doesn't matter if you take a SATA one or an IDE one.
But yes the HD 5770 is a really good card for it's value.

  35. #35
@Adratus do those PC's come without the monitor ? i mean all i need is the tower.

EDIT: just found the barebone section what do you think about getting this http://www.novatech.co.uk/novatech/p...BB-I5764N.html and what graphics card would you recommend for it ?

  36. #36
No they don't (I don think lol) but with that barebone bundle I would get the ATI 6850, that's the one I have and it's fantastic

Bear in mind thought normally the rule is the more money you invest in the GPU the longer it will you be able to play games on highest settings.

  37. #37
also do any of thus barebone bundles come with softwear , like windows7 or would i have to buy that seperately?

I am quite doubtful about their own brand PSUs since they don't give much data for them if you look at the bare-bones section.
But yes for a bare-bone you'll have to buy your own Graphics Card, Hard Drive, Optical Drive and Operating System and more software you want.

  39. #39
so bearing in mind about getting software like an operating system and anti virus ect , would buying the parts and getting paying someone to build it still be cheaper?

I'd have to check for that barebone but most shops charge around €50 to put all your hardware together and charge more if you want software installed with it.
The cheapest would be building your own. But if you don't got any experience with that and don't want to risk anything you can pay them to build it for you.
About installing software well there is not much you can do wrong there so you can do that yourself even without any experience. Since there are enough tutorials for that on the internet.

  41. #41
ok got my payslip today and have 2 options :

    1. get a case with power supply and graphics card
    2. Just get a new low profile graphics card
im more interested in what can be achieved in the first option because it seems more sensible approach and leave me able to add other parts in the near future but advice on both options would be appreciated

EDIT: oh i forgot to mention ive got a budget of about £100-200 i hope that helps

With that budget I would suggest option 2 with the low profile 5570 we were discussing earlier (or something very similar) - it will allow you to play DoW2 fine, which is your primary objective in all this, and will leave you with £40-£140 left. Then you need to start thinking about buying a new PC further down the line and putting away the cash so you can spend £500+ on it when the time comes (say, in 8-12 months).

Jups I'd take a low profile card and then save for buying a new PC later on.
The HD 5570 or 5670 should do it.

  44. #44
ok i'll get the 5570 tomorrow if i can find it anywhere otherwise i'll just order it , ive got one question on the specs for the 5570 it says it needs GDDR3 ram , i dont think my PC has that , would i need to buy that as well?

No that's the ram that the card uses, you don't have to buy anything.

  46. #46
ah good it wouldnt bother me if i did i know its relatively cheap but its just i dont want to come to realize i need extra ram after ive bought everything lol.

also ive decided to install it myself ive seen videos of how to install low profile cards my main problem is my machine inside looks nothing like what ive seen on videos . i did take pictures of what it looks like but im not sure how to upload photos to here

Graphics card also have RAM on them.
And to keep any confusion away they named that GDDRX (where X is a speed version number like 2,3 or 5).
If you want to upload pictures you can do that on tinypic.com/ and then link them to here.
I could tell you where to put your card since it is really basic.

  48. #48
ok heres the picture i took , on all the videos ive seen the guy only had to take the side panel off i did that and this is what i found .

    http://tinypic.com/view.php?pic=2mebr42&s=7

  49. #49
It might just be because it's a custom chassis, but are you sure you got the correct side panel? I think we're just seeing a backplate for the motherboard

  50. #50
well im sure its the right side because thats the only panel that has a screw and i tried opening the other side but all the fans and everything else is attached to that side
