Slow but steady. Some things running late and BSS forums being down slowed things down alot.

Whatever you do Aidas, don't give up! I have seen many Afrika mods die in the past but this one looks to be the best yet by far. Keep it going, I think I speak for everyone when I say you have our support!

I cant wait to see the finished Sherman II and Sherman III.. shermans are one of my favorite tanks.. the M4A1 is beast... (its no tiger but it gets the job done!)

  4. #254
I actually hate the sherman simply because it got its crews killed so often when their was better tech available. It looks cool but annoys me that the Americans did not bring their heavies over until the very end of the war. No need to trade lives like that.

That's because Allied Army Staff needed mass produced vehicles which would be cheap and easy to make to outnumber the Germans, time spent on Heavy Vehicles would mean less Shermans, Less shermans means less ground covered and less infantry supported

yes it would be more safer to use Heavy vehicles but not all Heavy vehicles are invulnerable they would of gotten killed just as much as the Sherman crews, otherwise Hitler's army would of consisted of Tigers and Panthers instead of Panzer IVs and IIIs... the Crews knew the risks of driving tanks

and besides not all Sherman crews died when their tank got destroyed - heard of Lafayette G. Pool (Sherman Tank Ace commander who survived 3 tank explosions and commanded 3 different Shermans from 1944)

and also at the time in 1942 there was nothing as good than a Sherman, the T1 and M6 were considered Heavy tanks but they had poor cannons, only mounting a 75mm, and the Armor was only 30mms more than the Sherman, and it had an incredibly high silhouette... and due to its extra armor it could only do 22mph whereas the Tanks in the desert could do 30+ (excluding the Matilda and Churchill)

But in the africa the sherman wasnt horribly out classed.. unless it of course ran up on an 88 or a Tiger.

  7. #257
I was referring to the sherman in normandy and italy. But yes in the early war desert it was pretty good with its awesome high profile, low velocity gun. It was still only equal to the germans MKIV long 75 and stuggled with 88s and tigers later in the deserts of tunisia.

Loydyboy, you do realise they actually had heavies to ship to europe, they just chose not to use the cargo space. Thats how much they cared about their crews.
Are you trying to tell me the US tank crews loved the sherman because it was so safe. That US tank crews never once asked for a better tank?

I have heard of Lafayette G. Poole. An anomoly really. Not sure how many tigers and tiger IIs he killed. I know he had a few tanks shot from under him.

This is a good book to read. I have read it.

"Tommy Coockers" & "Ronsons" should really say it all. But in Africa they were a vast improvement on what we had. But it was obsolete in gun penetration and armour even then compared to german technology arriving on the field. Stubourness & Pride by the US general staff refused the British 17lb gun upgrade for US variants. And the firefly was probebly the best version of the tank upto the end of the war discounting the E8 which really arrived to late to make a differance .However, in sheer numbers its what won the war in France, unfortunatly the crews as always paid the price for its deficiencies, and only the general staff in Washington could be blamed for that, as they totally ignored recommendations from field officers and crews till the war was almost over.

The Sherman II and III will make an aperiance. For balance reasons they will be late game unlimited call in tanks comparable to the Korps' P4 ausf. F2. Grant will aswell be unlimited call in and comparable to the p4 ausf. F2 and a medium threat to the Tiger, meaning that 1v1 Grant v Tiger, the Tiger will win no doubt. The Tiger is limited to one per team, so if you loose it, you can call in another.

Also here are some ingame shots I've uploaded at moddb in case someone didn't see them.

Map [WIP] by Playmobil, infantry textures by VanAdrian, Axis Halftrack from EF, M3 halftrack texture and custom Briton and Axis headwear by Halftrack, animated by Burton.

    Little tip here :

The original infantry textures (wich are realy awesome ! ) were originaly made by Halftrack.

I did completely new boots textures + only did some more work/variations/little details changes on the uniform.

I think this is only placeholder for the moment, as mister Halftrack is realy busy at this time, so we will see what the master is going to do with african troops later in the mod developpment

Hello fans of the North African front,

It's that time of the month again. The time for an update!

It's been a long time since the last proper update, but it doesn't mean that we have stopped ( got stuck in the sand dunes ). This time we present you the American lend lease vehicles. The Sherman II, III and the M3 Grant.

The British Empire received 17,184 Sherman tanks under Lend-Lease, roughly 78% of all Shermans provided world wide under this program.

The first Shermans to see battle were M4A1s with the British Eighth Army at the Second Battle of El Alamein in October 1942. The tanks had been supplied in a hurry from the US which had removed them from their own units. They were then modified to British requirements and for desert conditions. Over 250, in 12 regiments, started the battle. They formed the "heavy squadrons" (16 tanks in each) of one brigade in each division of X Corps and some other squadrons of the other units taking part; the other heavy squadrons were still equipped with Grants and light squadrons were equipped with Crusader tanks. The Sherman's were still "outclassed" by the long gunned Panzer IV "Specials" but the British carried the battle though the Sherman units were largely out of the subsequent pursuit of the Germans. The Sherman was able to tackle enemy rearguards by using HE fired indirectly and the German Pak 50 anti-tank gun was only effective if it could engage the Sherman from the sides. More of the units in North Africa were converted to Shermans, though the infantry tank units retained their Churchills.
Also a little sneak peak at what's coming

Hope you enjoyed this update. For more images check out http://www.moddb.com/mods/company-of-heroes-afrika

What's the bottom-most tank? I know the others are the valentine and the bishop, but I can't identify the last one.

@Aidas2, have you planned to create the Sturmpanzer II?

In the back of my mind.
I'd forgotten about this mod. The new vehicle model renders look great, although at first i thought you'd gotten a hold of DMz's M3 Grant there.

Looking back over the previous screenshots, I just noticed the DAK MG34 crew are wearing sun helmets! It's an awesome feature i just noticed. I'm particulary interested in this mod more so than ever, as i re-enact DAK, and our group has a M3 Grant and a Matilda MkII (sadly lacking on the Axis front though).
