Weird HW2 v1.1 patching problem (Win)

    Hi All,

So I am returning to HW2 after a rather long break, and esp. excited to try out some of the mods that have come a long way in their development. After installing from CD, I can play v1.0 fine (aside from its balance issues, obviously), but when I update using the v1.1 patch, I cannot get the game to run - at all. Using my shortcut (with -luatrace added) I get the "hourglass" for a second and that's it; the optical drive doesn't even wind up to check the CD key.

I don't know what the problem is, and since the game doesn't even start then CTD, I can't even get a log file out of it. I am confident that my machine is up to the challenge since I've run all DOW & DOW2 games without any problems (i.e. my graphics card and drivers should be fine). If you need any more details, I'll be happy to supply them!

    Cheers, DS

    Edit #1
Forgot to mention that previous playing of HW2, successful patching, and Mods was on a Mac. After the problems I sometimes experienced on the Mac w/ HW2, I expected the Win install would be problem-free!

Usually the fix for that is to set the compatibility mode to Windows NT

*edit* although I also once had that problem when I had neglected to update my graphics driver from the one automatically installed by windows. If you have an Nvidia card, the driver installed by windows will NOT work in HW2, since it has some problems with OpenGL support.

Thanks TON_Viper. Sadly, I tried the "Windows NT" compatibility mode solution with no success, and my Nvidia card has the most current driver (27 Jun 2010), so I'm really at a loss as to what the problem might be. I'll take another pass at searching for solutions, but if anyone has other ideas, I'd be most grateful!!

Check your hw2.log file. It may contain a clue to the problem.

    Update

@TON_Viper, since my last reply, I am happy to report that I have been able to get HW2 to begin loading (at least I get the black screen and gigantic hourglass), and I believe this is due to using compatibility mode (glad I tried again), so I do have a logfile to look at:

    Code:

Unfortunately, it doesn't seem that helpful. Here is the error log which seems slightly more informative (but really long):

So, any info you can glean from these, I would be most appreciative!!

@ ORCACommander, check the year again; 27 Jun of last year! Yeah, I sometimes forget its 2011 already, too...

no i meant this year but i did not realize you were using a card that old. IIRC about that time last year was when they dropped support for a bunch of older cards with the new driver releases. Ok have you tried setting the core affinity to just use 1 core?

@ ORCACommander: Wow, didn't realize the Quadro FX 3700M (1024 mb VRAM) was old already (or at least not "that old"!). All right, then, apologies for the quip. I imagine I would set the card to use 1 core via the Nvidia control panel? (I'll check for some online refs, too).

Oh, did I mention, tho, that I was able to play the 1.0 version just fine? I think that is what I find weird about this!

    Thanks, DS

Ps. Thanks to Geoffs for fixing my tags... yeah, couldn't remember which to use for long stuff!

Try and see if you get better results using one of the drivers at http://www.laptopvideo2go.com

They edit the drivers so that even the newest drivers can be installed no matter which nvidia card you have. It is mainly intended for laptop cards, since laptop developers are notoriously slow at supplying driver updates on their own.

no i meant processor cores. only way i know to do it is through the task manager process list which might make things difficult since it is crashing so quickly.

@ TON_Viper: Ok, will give the drivers a try.

@ ORCACommander: Oh, understood. Yes, it is crashing really quickly, so working through the Task Manager may be really difficult as you suggest. I have a Quad Core processor, so you may be right that this is part of the problem. But I guess folks haven't had trouble with their Core2 Duo processors, though, right?

Sorry all, just trying to figure this out so I can play... must destroy enemy fleet!!!

Unless it is in someone else's quote of your post, you shouldn't have a problem editing the post. There should be an edit post button in the lower right corner of the post next to the reply button.

*edit* oh, you mean in the thread title. I think you can edit that too, but I'm not entirely sure if I'm thinking of another forum in that.
