Pocktio's Abyss - The Tau have consumed me - Suggest a paint scheme!

I have decided to begin collecting anew, with the intent to play tabletop.

    THUS BEGINS

The Darkness of Pocktion, a Black Legion splinter-group active around the Segmentum Obscurus.

Ok random backstory aside, I am pretty terrible at painting. I have a mild inherited condition which means my hands have a bit of a shake, which really doesn't help. Anyways, I can improvise technique a little so it doesn't look too bad. So I shall be posting pictures of my minis for feedback on what I can do better, or what I can add or change etc

Anyways, it is very early days and I've not painted for nearly a decade now so lols.

    Current plans

    Here's my work area

    Spoiler

Here's my main block of work, a vindicator with Ultramarine tank sergeant and a squad of Chaos Legionaries.

    Spoiler

Here's a 'finished' Chaos Terminator Lord, my first attempt so far

    Spoiler

I've still to finish the boney bits, and do some work on the weapons and their...tubing. The cloak is totally unfinished, I tried to paint green stripes on it but oh god has it gone horribly wrong, and no you aren't getting pictures of any complete fuck ups.

Side on view of ze combi melta

    Spoiler

Random bits and bobs, here's a Tiger I'm considering turning into a grot tank.

    Spoiler

Here's my box of things, including tank accessories and other assorted power armour thingies

    Spoiler

    Future plans

    Chosen

Ok so I'm not content with having plain old, out the box Chaos Marines. So, I shall be converting. I'm aiming to get a Chaos Marine battleforce for starters, which will give me another CSM squad to work with. From them I'm going to a) pimp out my current marines and b) contemplate making some Chosen for an elite choice

To do this I am planning on getting

    Iron Warriors Conversion

    Black Legion pads

Icons/Banners - though I'm unsure of how well these fit and to what? Are they for tanks, or can they be attached to back packs etc

Armour packs - I see older armour variants on FW, though I'm getting that these are models, rather than conversion kits. So I'll just have extra mans. I can't turn my Chaos Marines into heresy-era dudes?

    Filling out my army

To support my battleforce I will have a squad of terminators. To these I shall be converting a set of combi-meltas. I'm not sure but I think the kit has at least one, so I'll need to make four. To achieve this I've been reading up on conversion.

In my Chaos squads I'll have at least two flamers, combined with two bolters = 2 combi-meltas.
Similarly I hope the Chaos squad has a melta? To which it is an easy combine with the bolter using my modelling stabby.

    So entirely possible.

    Loyalists gone bad

My friend gave me a command squad and vindicator. I'm planning on 'defiling' the aquilas with my stabby, and getting a Chaos vehicle bits to add some spikes. Command squad, not so sure. Not sure sure at all. Any ideas how to Chaos them up?

    Future future plans

    Forgeworld Black Legion Dreadnought

    Maybe a tank

    Painty paint

For painting a standard Black Legion guy I've been spraying them with Chaos Black, then base coating them with a mixture of chaos black and foundation grey. Over this I use foundation white to highlight the bits that will be ... not black.

For the bronze highlights I then provide a layer of gunmetal foundation, ontop of which I use a slightly watered down burnished bronze.

For the red tubing (I like my tubes red) I tend to underlay with gunmetal too.

Disclaimer: I suck balls at taking pictures, and my phone is only .. 3 or 5 megapixels. Combine with shaky hands and..yeah. I'll try and get clearer, less blurry shots next time.

So yeah, any tips, suggestions on feedback as to where I'm going or what I'm doing wrong would be great.

PS: could a mod add the ending square bracket to my title? I accidentally hit enter

I'm not surprised. Anything within three feet of you seems to end up full of knife shaped holes.

In terms of advice, I can offer none other than "make sure you have a metric tonne of fine paint brushes". You'll need them, especially for detail.

I cannot help but snigger when i read "I have a mild inherited condition which means my hands have a bit of a shake" and see the rum bottle on the plan...

Kidding aside, advice for painting black that doesn't look too... plain black (and other than chaos black with codex grey lining): mix some paints to reach a very dark grey, anthracite (or just use other paint brands, eg. vallejo or AP) and apply a wash of Badab Black that'll get in the recesses, actually making them look darker than the dark grey. Optional veeeery light drybrush of a dark grey on raised surfaces and you're good.

Glad to see you've decided to carry this warband on eventually.

Cudos to you pock, like everyone that has shakey hands like me and still gets on to painting infantry ;-) But seeing that Termi Lord, your shaking seems to be not as bad as mine ;-)
    Looking forward to see more.

Small update, the final bits of the CSMs have been assembled, waiting for glueification. Just need to highlight the torsos/legs with burnished bronze and I'm away!

    Spoiler

Although I've forgotten my base-coat mix. It was 1:1 Chaos Black but I've forgotten which grey...maybe Adeptus Grey.

Question - What should I get for conversions, I am looking at the 'hobby knife' is this is a good buy? I mean I know I need it to make my much lusted after combi-plasma weapons but is it good for price or are their better alternatives?

Thanks, going through a tutorial has let me seen the light of my erroneous ways. Should be a good way to standardise my minis. Anyways today has been productive, I have assembled and begun basecoating for highlights.

Oh and he is my squad favourite. Brother Encar, the squad liability/plot device who has Khornate tendencies.

    Spoiler

And a rather terrible picture of progress, showing my silvery highlights. Later tonight shall be the time for the shoulder pad trims etc.

    Spoiler

So should be in a 'finished' state by tomorrow evening. All I'll need to do it touch up with some better highlights/blend it up a bit.

On the not-quite-black blacks subject - I've been undercoating both the black and necron abyss blue bits on my loyalists with straight Adeptus, then using thinned Chaos Black (or Abyss where appropriate) to get back to black/very dark blue. I think I overdid the black on the squad there are pics of in my thread, but the general principle seems like it ought to work to me. Also, man you are making some progress. It's good to see another person working on an army at the same time - keeps me inspired.

Keep up the good work Pock.

I've gone for a straight prime with Chaos Black spray, then doing highlights. I found using a slightly lighter black makes highlights look less good. Although I can't do them for shit anyway, so feh. Now it's a 'I'm far too lazy to do that shit by hand 25 times' :P

Anyways, UPDATES! UPDATES FOR THE UPDATE GODS!

Here we have my Sorceror, who shall be affixed with a Tzeentchy Icon style banner pole. He's still drying, so recent is this work.

    Spoiler

And my attempt at slicing up some weapons to make combi-versions of them, for my Terminators and Aspiring Champs. The combi-flamer was tricky, so I opted to remove the magazines/tank and affix them to the side of the weapon. A homage to the sten gun as it were.

    Spoiler

Also a shot of my so very almost finished Legionaries. They need their eyes done, a brown wash over the gold and silver highlights.

    Spoiler

Oh and my to-do pile has gotten larger!

OOOOOOH Sprues for the sprue gods! Which treacherous, blackhearted scum do these represent when assembled? Also, love the combi-weapons - I think they're going to look ace when painted, man! The legionnaires are looking good - after the wash to dirty up/tone down the metallics, I think they'll be pretty damn fine too...

Small update, this evening I assembled all my minis bar the possessed. They get done last.

Sorceror is even more...sorcerous, with his Icon of Tzeentch.

    Spoiler

And one of my new favourites, my Aspiring Champion for the BBQ CSM squad.

    Spoiler

And here is the glory shot. My soon to be all powerful warband

    Spoiler

HQ units - Clawlord + Sorceror

    Spoiler

    Elites - Terminators

    Slightly blurred, my apologies

    Spoiler

Sporting the trendy combi-melta conversion I whipped up a few days ago. The swordinator is also a conversion, I cut off the axe and placed the hilt of the sword on the hand. Worked splendidly I think. For such elite, ancient warriors I thought it best they each have their 'own' weapons.

I seem to have forgotten to take a picture of the zerks and csms, they shall come later. For now I am all modelled out

  12. #12
If I did not have cmelta by the buttloads, I'd SO steal that conversion.

    Tanks and tacticals!

    Spoiler

    Termicide squad, with Termicide Champion.

Can't wait to paint it. The gold bits have been coated with a mix of brown and bronze. Next stop, darkened boltgun metal

So, i see you've included a Greater Daemon? Can't figure which power it is affiliated with... unless... Oh! No, that can't be right...

Wiener for the Wiener God!!! Strasburger for the Strasburger Throne!!!

More seriously, what paint treatment do you plan to apply to your Berzerkers?

That's the herald. The greater daemon is the big brown thing with multiple blue eyes

    Zerker plan:
    Prime with scab red
    Wash with badab black
Scab red/gore red mix on armour plates
Blood red 'gradients' (this is likely the bit I will fail at)

Then, if I'm capable of doing so
Blood red/vomit brown mix on armour plates
    Red/Orange mix on armour plates

These are meant to be highlights, but considering how badly I fucked up the last attempt I may not bother.

I'll be using super watered down paints, and trying to 'drag' the paint towards edges/middles to create shading. Probably going to fail horribly

Champion looks great. The lines look very clean from this image. Keep up the good work.
More of a strategy question but with the terminators are you planning on a DS approach or pack them into a LR and charge forward?

Thanks guys, I have moar pictures. Mostly of my combi-flamer Aspiring Champion :P To come, to come. Soon.

@ Tronzor He's a sub for my Terminator Lord, as I want a Claw option.

My first Lord was before I wanted an army to play with, so he has a combi-melta/chainfist. Thus fits better within my melta-termicide squad. So this guy is just a kind of swap-around jobby.

    Spoiler

Terminators near completion, and I'm slowly getting through the tacticals. Slowly, as I look upon my desk I see around 12 more, along with the 8 beserkers and the sorceror. Oh and tanks. They get done last.

    Still, progressing nicely!

    Behold, my latest haul.

    Spoiler

I also placed a hugetastic Forgeworld order.

My warband has now transformed fully into a Khornate splinter group of the Black Legion. They are now to be headed by a core of World Eaters, led by the mighty (sometimes, I aim to get a daemon prince sometime) Lord Zhufor. Gonna try using those new glazes (bloodletter) to see if that can make regular Black Legion colours look....bloodsoaked.

New elites will be made from the Sternguard conversion I'm plotting. The Black Templar conversion sprinkled with Chaosy bits from the leftover sprues should make them look sufficiently cloaky and special. I wanted to convert Dark Angel veterans but they had sold out. Craft GW buggers...

    Spoiler

I took the picture, then realised the leftmost Raptor still had mould stuff :P

Next step, erasing Imperial Iconography and replacing with blasphemous sigils and icons!

So after working nonstop since November, I finally have a week off.

My goal - have a playable 1,000pt list AND play it.

So I should have regular updates again soon, with actual paints.

I now have a huge box of FW goodies, though I need to magnetise the Decimators arms. How does one do that?

Well, dunno how the decimator arms look really, but normally, for magnetizing weapon options on Dreads, you get 2 small magnets per weapon arm, drill a whole wide enough to put the magnet in at the "attachment points" and glue it in. Easy as that

Those Sternguard look ace, even if it's a pretty simple conversion.

Sternguard will be having their Imperial Iconography ritually desecrated using my newly acquired knife! Then I will drape them in Chaotic icons and sigils, as far as I can drape them anyhow.

I will be either using them as Chosen, or dispersing them into tactical squads as either Champions, or just to add a bit of visual variety in my troops.

This is my work for the week,

    Spoiler

Next step is to unpack the GW spray gun I got months ago and begin basing them, with either scab red or khorne red. I'm doing two test models to see which I prefer, both will have a wash and layer of wazdakka.

    Current zerks are -
    Scab red base
    Badab Black wash
    Wazdakka red

I'm loving the vibrancy of the colours, I can't wait to add bronze. They're going to be my favourite models I'm sure.
I'll be posting up comparison shots for those who are interested (New versus old! wooooo!)

    Ok test models

Which do we prefer? Left or right?

Can you post a few more angles? Its kinda of hard to see much of a difference right now. But im more leaning to the one on the right, as it looks less pink (from that shown angle)

they both seem.. umh really odd done. are you playing with colors or? always undercoat your minis (atleast I think they turn out best that way) you might wanna skip using black wash cause the one on the right seem to dark in some rescesses

take a look at Ap0k's zerkers.. he did a red base and yellow highlights and then washed with red a couple of times (did this myself and I really like the effect)

    just my thoughts

Color-wise, you can tell the one on the right is more of a Scab Red* base and the one on the left is more of a Blood Red* base. Personally, I'd go with a darker shade for Berzerkers, just because fluff-wise they're supposed to be covered in gore/blood and dried blood is most definitely not Blood Red* colored.

I agree with MaGiC in that you probably shouldn't use a pure black color for shading. Red is one of those colors that generally looks better with brown for shading, maybe a Scorched Brown* or Devlan Mud* color?

This is the darker red of my own Berzerkers

Another good way to shade red ive found is to use the Blue wash and apply it in the recesses/ darkest places then follow it with the red wash to get rid of the blue-ish tint. Youll get a nice dark redish colour thats easy to blend up to whatever red your using (due to the use of washes)

I must say I prefer the scab red base (which is the right one, spot on)

The bright pinkish red is from a Khorne Red base, I remember the guy in the store said KR was a replacement to Scab red, if so it's crap. Way too bright.

I'll do a run with a scab base, then a devlan mud wash and then layer it up with wazdakka red. Now that's the one paint I'm loving, it's perfect for lifting up dark reds <3

I will also try Ap0ks method, but the multiple layers are a bit too much effort. I don't/can't paint to that level, I just want them to look good enough to not be a shamefrul dispray on the tabletop

Ok so I finally have a day off entirely to myself, so I whipped out my as of yet unused citadel spray gun..

    Holy shit I love it

Did several hours work in less than an hour with the beauteous thing, results as shown:

    Spoiler

Also new scheme for zerks I'm attempting is:

    Spoiler

The darker is with badab black wash, I may do random washes. Seeing as darker the red base, the more sexy the wazdakka highlights will come out. I was also stupid and washed them before applying the base coat

    My idea is:

    Mechrite Red prime (spraycoat)
    Khorne Red basecoat (spraycoat)
    Devlan mud wash
    Wazdakka red highlights

And voila, just onto the bronze.

Any feedback, or suggestions on alternate paint schemes would be most appreciated!

Actually looking at the pictures it looks like khorne red is the new mechrite, whereas I dunno what the new scab red is. I hope me accidentally using mechrite doesn't bite me in the ass, though I'm under the impression you can't go wrong with a mechrite red base for red models?

Bronzey! Obviously needs a....lot of tidy up lines, but otherwise I'm quite pleased with myself. It actually doesn't look half bad! I like the colours, despite how messily applied they are. Once tidied up, the weapons sorted and some lense effects and I'll be looking at my favourite model yet!

    Few other screenies...

Really liking the models. The red looks really nice and quite different from the more pinky red from quite a few posts above(which is a good thing :P). Keep it up, i cant wait to see them finished up!

Love the red on the Termies. It looks very similar to mostly dried blood... which is appropriate, for World Eaters.

Hellbrute...well that was a bit of a fail, the camera really overcolours pictures it is a lot more muted irl but I probably wont be using green for a long time.

It's just so painfully messy looking, I need to practice alot more on large models I think.

The Hellbrute doesnt look as bad as you make it out to be... i really like the look of the purple tentacles in particular.

Also what head is that on the chosen with the wings?

Tis a Skull Champion helmet, from my zerker bitz.

The Hellbrute actually got decent praise when I actually got it out in public. It was strangely pleasing to have a mob of children (a few adults too!) fawning over my models. They can't paint for shit themselves though so my middling ability must have been breathtaking for them ha.

Alas though, painting is on hold as I've come down with something nasty. No energy and the cough makes holding a paint brush tricky!

Ok so it was a while since I actually played this game but I felt I should write up my first ever battle.

A small strike-force of Darkness versus the (surprisingly painful) mortal lapdogs of the False Emperor.

    Force composition:

    HQ
    Chaos Lord 105pts
    Power armour
    Power weapon, plasma pistol
    Mark of Khorne,

    Elites
    Helbrute 105pt
    Chaos Terminators 198pt
    3x Lightning claw pairs
    2x heavy flamer

    Troops
    Khorne Besekers 225pt
    9x Zerky
    1x Zerky Champ w/powerfist
    Chaos Space Marines 155pts
    9x CSM
    1x AC w/power weapon

    Heavy Support
    Obliterators 210pt
    X3
    Total 998pts

Enemy list comprised of shit-loads of missile teams, guardsmen by the bucket load and a Vendetta with more guardsmen in it.

Alrighty time for some terrible roleplaying write-upness. I'll spoiler it incase you wish to avert your gaze :P

Anyways, so I finally tidied my room, properly.

And it involves a complete re-arrangement of my models as there were batches of them all over. There is but one place for ones armies, in plain view of all who would dare enter your sanctum. I now realise I should probably finish all of this before starting new things.

Bestest batrep i've read in ages. Please apply at GW/WD to write theirs, i'm sure they'll become less annoying.

Also, lesson learned i hope, get some friggin Rhinos for your Berzerkers.
