I have another 18 hours to go in America. Or so I assume, I usually get games at 1:00 pm.

Roaming about the land gives you so much to do but if you don't remember to hit f5 every encounter you WILL be made sad by the game closing itself.

Or you could just make sure you enter everywhere you go, to whore the save upon entry thing.

Game really needs a timed autosave though....

I'm not surprised. Anything within three feet of you seems to end up full of knife shaped holes.

    Autosave is for consoles.

Played it for about 3 hours last night before sleep finally claimed me. First impressions are positive. Very, very positive.

I'm gonna be comparing to Oblivion, since that's what it really needs to be better than. I'm not gonna make a call one way or another on whether it's better than Morrowind yet; instinctively I'm saying that the gameplay is better and more refined but it lacks Morrowind's magnificent setting (not saying Skyrim's is bad, just not as good).

I've been playing a mage, so I'll start with the magic system. It feels great. The sight of pouring flame from both hands into something is awesome. The ability to equip two seperate spells is pretty cool as well, can imagine some awesome mage duel type stuff with wards and offense spells. The weapon combat I haven't tinkered with too much (because fire!) but it feels fairly similar to Oblivion's, only without (as far as I can tell so far) the horrid stunlock that plagued Oblivion. Thief gameplay seems improved. Lockpicking reminds me a bit of Thief 3 (and some other game I can't quite put my finger on), and is a big improvement over Oblivion. Core stealth itself doesn't seem much different, save that the better graphics engine makes finding shadows earlier. Again, not an area I've dabbled in much yet.

Speaking of the graphics, they're good. Really good. And (as most of you will know) I'm more of an art design nut, but they seem to have gotten that right too. Finally someone at Bethesda has realised that you can have a well designed character concept rendered in a decent model. They aren't the best character models I've seen in a game ever but they are SO MUCH BETTER than Oblivion core or Morrowind Better Bodies.

Similar for the world design. It doesn't have the quirkiness that made Morrowind the magical place it was for me, but it's light years ahead of Oblivion's "yay, more boring trees" type layout. From the bits I've seen so far, probably on a par with Shivering Isles. There's also a Bloodmoon vibe here but, well, you'd expect there to be. Having to actually navigate around giant chasms in the snow and ice feels awesome.

The opening sequence is amazing. It puts every other TES game to shame (yes I realise this isn't saying much but it does).

I'll be playing some more in a few hours time (stupid real life is interfering with my ability to burn my enemies to cinders), will add more things as I find them. That said, already going to say that this was money well spent, whatever the rest of the game shows.
Let's Play Europa Universalis 3: Divine Wind
Let's Play Master of Magic: Abandoned
In the beginning there was nothing. Then Steam crashed.

Reading the GameSpy review im annoyed to find that Bethesda have made a game that ignores PC's use of mouse and keyboard for interface and just stuck with the console version. Perhaps they will fix it with a patch?

Fix? Just because something using a working alternate system does not make it broken.

I actually use the mouse to navigate the windows, it's really quick and painless. No more do I have to tab up an inventory, click on items then scroll through an endless list of crap to get what I want. It's streamlined, the favourites system is excellent and it's just great in every way.

I'm confused what you mean here, because Oblivion didn't have stunlock. Oblivion's was just back and forth "hammer the attack button until somebody died". I hear it's mostly the same as that, but enemies (and you) actually stagger now. Is that true? And do you have to cast spells with staves or can you club people with them?

It depended on your Dexterity a bit, but at low levels Oblivion's combat was all stunlock. You got hit, staggered, got hit, staggered, etc until you died. As dex went up it got better until it went away completely. Like I said, haven't experimented much here but from what I've seen the basic attacks don't stagger at all, whilst the "power attacks" for want of a better term do, but use up a ton of stamina.

Oh, I remember now. That happened with power attacks if you had low stamina/block/whatever. Just slicing away never did anything like that. It was particularly shitty because that was all goblins did.

So its now 3:13am in the UK..I started Skyrim at 12:13am...I would like to know where my hours have gone Skyrim, please tell me. Well in other news, this game is great so far. I've cleared what I think is the first "dungeon" so to speak, quite fun, actually had to use health potions, huzzah. Have to say the sweeping vistas are incredible, the terrian and detail of it is breaktaking at points. I love the whole grim dark "aww were fucked, dragons here" feel it has, I admit I feel a smidgen bit overwhelmed on what I'm supposed to be doing, I am following the quests so it seems straight forward, but there is alot of "right, you get on with it, do what you want" feel to the game.

Game certainly is enjoyable and seems to be building a good story straight from the start, though my only complaint is the controls and menu/UI, it seems alittle sluggish/clunky and you can see it was designed for a xbox360 controller to be used on the pc version, that being said atleast you can change keys and adjust a few bits here and there so it isn't to annoying.

I've gone with a Nord so far, seems ok, stats and stuff not really delved into nore what I really suppose to be doing with all these different trees and stuff, but plodding along having fun so that is the good part of it all.

Ennnnh........godamnit. I was doing so well resisting the siren call. "I have Saints Row 3 next week, with Batman: Arkham City and Serious Sam 3 the week after" I kept telling myself. "Plus I'm on vacation and away from my computer the week of Thanksgiving, there's no way I'll play ALL those titles before the Christmas sale when Skyrim is sure to be discounted a little bit."

Then I saw this. A sale, albeit just 10%, the one thing I had been waiting for.

Fine, I yield Skyrim! I'll buy you now, you and your stupid pot heads, and play you all the way until SR3 hits, and maybe even further. But just so you know, I'm going to hate every minute of fun I'm having.

Anyone playing on PC have something like this or is it only me? http://steamcommunity.com/profiles/7...592961?tab=all - basically I don't see all the GFX effects, like flame spell flame or cobwebs cobweb, only a veeeery small 'effect' that's barely noticeable.

@Akranadas Oh I don't have the time. But I'm not trying to claim I'm purchasing these titles in the most cost-efficient manner. I should have been playing Arkham City and Serious Sam 3 last month, but they got delayed and my preorders were already in (Greenman Gaming has awesome discounts for preorders). It would seem $6 is all it takes to get me to give in and buy another title when I've already got plenty of amusements imminent.

@Maktaka, I'm holding off of buying Skyrim cause I have zero time to donate to playing it, between working 5 days a week and games like Battlefield 3, the only time I would have for it is my weekend... then AC:R comes out next week

Dunno, might change my mind when I leave from work today.

    @Skullcap
AFAIK. Skyrim works like all bethe games.
1 main quest but a metric shit ton of exploring.
Explore! do little quests and steal!

You should. You really really should. I have my hands full with Uncharted 3 and Battlefield 3 but damn... This game just deserves my time more than those other 2 titles.

Anyone got any potion recipes? The guy at the inn in Riverwood tells you how to make a health potion but I promptly forgot what the ingredients were and there is no chat log it seems. :P

Edit: Nevermind, it was Wheat & mushroom that starts with B.

First impressions: Best game I've played in a really, really long time. I can see myself losing months to it.

Wow. So much cool stuff! Since I'm still playing, I'm just going to edit in things of note into this post.

Firstly, dual wielding fire just sold me on magic. Secondly, catching salmon... the manly way. Thirdly, tanning hides! Finally, vindication for all the wildlife I burn and slaughter!

Edit: I also like how even the undead can have beards. So many manly beards! Good ol' skyrim. Also also, dat special fist "kill sync".

I'm blown away by the "hidden" improvements, by this I mean that the distant mountains are wreathed in clouds and fog, the fact that when it's blazing sunlight outside and you run into a darkened building the screen actually darkened to simpulate coming inside from bright light.

Not to mention the bandits thumping their shields and generally being abusive arses, and when you approach they say "that's close enough" etc.

Remember the "Wow" moment when you left the sewer in oblivion? I had that moment when I first discovered Whiterun at night. Wow.

In other news, smithing is fun, but how the fuck do you smelt iron ore? Got a ton of the stuff.

Also, still cannot decide on heavy or light armour. I guess in the long run it doesn't matter since you can basically get every skill to 100, but I'm thinking that using Heavy Armour for combat and carrying non-armour clothes for sneaking might be the best bet.

Well, off to bed, since I work. And stuff. I'm just wondering if punching things is tied to any skill. Since I love beating down people after I use up all my mana burninating the countryside.

Also, seeing the night sky reminded me of morrowind's. It was so pretty, with that big moon, I had my guy kill some random hunter for his camp, so I could sit down and gaze at the sky proper, beside a warm campfire.

Yeah but still the retarded Oblivilol/Morrowind crime system - I steal a piece of bread on one side of Skyrim and a merchant somewhere else will know it is stolen. I free a Stormcloak prisoner by killing his Imperial capturers and everyone knows I killed them, even if I actually get to Whiterun before the prisoner does. Oh well, just have to stay on the straight and narrow until we get some mods.

Wanted list: Real time mod, crime system mod, more sensible smithing system mod (steel ingots out of iron and some magical metal, even though the smith sells charcoal, raaaagh)

The first bandit I saw was guarding a tower. When he saw me he got up, shield in hand, and starting shrugging, going "Well what are YOU going to do about it?"

Having had a change to craft or smelt or do anything but set things on fire yet, but damn is setting things on fire fun!

I'm 6 hours in and have barely done any quests. Just fucking around with the alchemy and smithing and exploration. This is one of those games where I really, really REALLY recommend that you don't read much of anything before diving in to the world. I can't remember playing any game where exploration was so satisfying.

My exams are in just over a week. Ah well. This is awesome, been through Bleak Flats Barrow and fighting those undead, loving the kill animations! Stabbity Stab Stab! It's great that it starts out in such a way that the main quest is basically "so yeah go see this guy if you want to know more about dragons, or go see my hot sister" rather than "QUICK EVERYTHING DEPENDS UPON YOU!" in Oblivion.

Anyone else have issues with dual wielding magic? I got the Dual Wield Conjure skill. States when using dual wield it adds more time to the summon. Yet when you use both at once it does the normal problem. You just summoned twice. AKA if you use it to raise dead it turns that thing into ash (can only summon the same dead once)...

This happened to me, but only with a specific weapon (the Long Bow). Really annoying, really stupid.

But in other news, the game's awesome. Looks like I'm turning into some sort of stealthy assassin battlemage, with heavy armor, sneaky bow snipering, lots of magic and hitting things with my axe.

EDIT: Dual-wielding destruction spells works great. Haven't tried conjuration yet.
