@Kien:
Power attacks with two handed weapons stagger giants, not to mention that you have Fus Roh Da too, Fus Roh staggers them and i believe Roh Da even knocks them down. Only problem is when you have more than one on you, but then it's just a matter of being patient.
So how does a Daedra Prince end all war and suffering in Skyrim? That's howSpoiler
At least that's what he would do.
I love the item he gives. The weapon was worthless. Didn't even need to think twice about it. He is the god of trickery and deals![]()

If you guys are stuck at work and/or feeling charitable, take a look at this and help me play Skyrim again. It's the weirdest problem I've ever had with a GPU.
Egregious Professor Of Cruel And Unusual Geography
So after seeing Blackreach, I now believe that Skyrim officially has better art design than any other Elder Scrolls game.
@Kien - You'd be shocked, I only started carrying a bow and some arrows after facing a Blood Dragon near Ivarstead and could only use foul language as it kept flying overhead and just hovering out of my reach. That fight took over half an hour because I had to play the waiting game.
edit: what the hell, I just lost 35 points in one-handed, except it's red as if it's debuffed and I'm not seeing anything under active affects that would indicate such.

Fun fact, you can set people on fire with torches.
My Interceptor is better than your Interceptor.

I'm doing one of the last thief's guild quest and on my way to the location, I went by Shearpoint and decided to grab the shout. I couldn't get my x15 crit off against krosis, but it turns out the lich AI is still standard AI. I sent an arrow flying at a stone pillar and the bonehead (pun intended) left his post, allowing me time to get what was in the chest and the shout as well. Since I have yet to fight my first dragon in the storyline for my Nightblade/assassin character, only the lich was present, no dragon spawned. Just incase anyone wanted that entire shout ahead of time.

Dwarven ruins are amazing.
Spoiler
the dwarven ruins up some mountain with a research team in it.
I had a serious bioshock flashback at many areas, along with strong aylid ruin vibes mixed together. On top of all that, the attempted storytelling and diaries lying around completely enthralled me.
more spoilers.
Spoiler
however, just when i was thinking the mechanical bioshock stream would climax, i find these weird falmer (sp?) armour pieces...and then a falmer arrow, and then the falmers themselves, killing the constructs and falling off walkways to their deaths. one of them had vampire dust on them (one and only one) so the quick concept of them being the vampyric ancestors of the dwemer deflated before i could fluff it up in my head. Then i just thought of "devolved" dwemer, pale from the lack of sun and feeding on anything silly enough to spelunk into the ruins, besides the dragonborne. I then thought of goblins for some reason, and immediately threw it into oblivion because fuck goblins. some kind of demonic curse?! maybe they enhanced their mechanical technology so far that it became organic?!?!?!
I had to remind myself many times that i was indeed playing a TES game, sequel to oblivion, because it was too cool compared to oblivion

can you guys give me a hand getting my head around soul gems?
this is the first elder scrolls game I have actually been captivated by and will now play the tits off of.
Now with soul gems:
How does one determine what soul is bound to what gem, is it in order of where the item sits in your inventory or something else?
I have Azura's star, and it wont refill at all. I have killed everything I can find (bears/people/giants etc) and it wont refill the star. The other annoying thing is I'm dropping heaps of $$ to get grand/black soul gems that are empty to fill, and they are being filled with petty/lesser souls.
I have got smithing to 100+ and enchanting to 100, and want to start enchating my end game armor (light dragon scale, tell me if theres something better please!).
So TLR
How do I ensure soul gems capture the best possible soul, as it seems terribly inefficient right now.
@Ammon Ra - Your theory is close, but loading screens say otherwise.Spoiler
The Falmer are the snow elves, they were thought to have died out, but they were driven underground, allied with the dwemer and the dwemer enslaved them, force fed all of them a fungus that blinded them. The two races kept waging war until one day the Dwemer vanished, IE when they tried to activate that mechanical god that created the Tribunal and Dagoth Ur.
BigSteve - Soul gems work kinda oddly. They automatically fill the suckiest soulgem available for the soul you trapped. If for example you have one grand soul gem and you kill a rabbit, you just trapped a petty soul into something expensive (read: wasted money). Also, you should finish Azura's questline to get the star useable if you didn't already. Hint -Spoiler
going back to Azura lets you trap anything cept' humans and going to Nelacar lets you only trap humans.
When I noticed the name of the talking dog... Well. Lets just say I was wary of anything that certain god/Daedra would offer me. The accents and whole thing with the Vampires was well worth it though. So how does a Daedra Prince end all war and suffering in Skyrim? That's how
Also the main quest has succeed in making me join the Mages College. I'm not sure if its more annoying then having the thieves guild quests stuck in my journal or the lack of a coach in Winterhold, but its up there.
Thanks Misiok, my problem is that I've returned to Azura, completed the star, and it wont fill, regardless of what I kill. I've tried dropping it and picking it up again, selling to vendors and repurchasing etc but the bloody thing wont refill no matter what I try.
In hindsight, I should of gone the black route... argh.
It's ocurred to me that when the Nords bitch about Elves they're being a bit damn cheeky. The Mer were the first to settle Tamriel and of the great advanced civilisations, the Altmer, the Ayleids, the Falmer and the Dwemer, the Nords genocided two of them personally, undoubtedly upped the pressure on the Dwemer which may have led to their mistake and eventually conquered the Altmer as the Empire.
It's not as if there's been any great benefit to their presence in Tamriel as the magical and technological level of civilisation hasn't caught up to what it was before the Nords turned up 4000 years ago, yet the Aldmeri Dominion reforms to set about reclaiming their ancestral lands and everyone gets snotty about it.
From the lore I've read, the social hierachy applied in Skyrim is not native to nords, and the underlying xenophobia/hatred comes from the social stigma of master/leader - slave/led. The fact there must be masters and there must be slaves is not something that sits well with "free men of skyrim".
It is understandable, regardless of who had original dominion, that actively enslaving a sapient species and expecting them to stay that way is naive at best. Also humans seem to progress/expand/fall at a far faster rate than any other species.

Anyone know if there is a way to turn off helmets/headgear? Because helmets just look silly on my Argonian, especially the ones that have closed face protection.

It's silly, but I just don't wear them unless I'm in a rather frustrating encounter. Most of the helmets look pretty ridiculous on my hot-sauce Nord female.Anyone know if there is a way to turn off helmets/headgear? "You must be swift as the coursing river, with all the force of a great typhoon, with all the strength of a raging fire, mysterious as the dark side of the moon."
So I've got nearly one hundred of those eggs that you only find in falmer-ridden caves, no to just find the appropriate-matching partner ingredient and my alchemy will fucking sky-rocket.

@ Ammon: Were those ruins for the mages college quest at Mzulfr or whatever it's called, just did that dungeon now, brilliant!
Spoiler
First fight against one of the massive constructs, and a lovely synch kill. Plus the orrery type device at the end of it was really cool
Unfortunately Lydia (my ingot mule) managed to stay at the start of the entire dungeon and not follow me (and it's a *really* long dungeon, had to go back and find her once i'd finished.
@BigSteve Bit of a silly question but you are using soul trap spell or a soul trap enchanted weapon on those you kill arn't you? If not there soul won't be trapped in the Azura (or any Soul gem), its a silly mistake but I was victim too it till I saw the soul trap spell info on the loading screens.
As for helmets, I use my Dragon helm when I have too (bosses etc. -25% damage from the wear full heavy armour perk is too good to pass up) but otherwise I just wear an apprentice hood, looks kool![]()

Yeah im using the bound swords out of the conjurations tree, with the damage increase perk and soul trap perk. Im also using the enchanting perk that traps 5% of a soul.
Nothing works, the star will remain empty![]()
I'm guessing you went inside it and killed the dude etc. Cant think of anything else, maybe try trapping animal souls with a normal weapon + soultrap and not the bound blade.
Yeah I have not tried that yet.. Im level 33 so it will take a while to get that spell. Maybe if I used the mace of Molag lal(sp).
You sure you don't have any other grand soul gems in your inventory and that you're killing animals that "drop" grand souls? I'm using the exact same thing, white azura star + soul trap bound blades and azura's star usually counts for whatever reason as the last grand soul gem in my inventory.
I just let my awesome axe I found in a Dwemer 'Storeroom' (ie, Lootcity) set everything on fire. The first time I used it - on a bear - I was pleasantly surprised!Fun fact, you can set people on fire with torches.
Hmm... I will clear my inventory tonight and test this with the star. What are some common grand souls, giants/bears/sabre cats?

The Aldmeri Dominion performing their own ethnic cleansings will do that.

I just realised that the Aldermi Dominion is like Israel, but colder and with elves. (Well, ok no so much ethnic cleansing, but displacing a settled population based on ethnic background is still pretty terrible). And I just got political didn't I? Or was it Bethesda? The Aldmeri Dominion performing their own ethnic cleansings will do that.

No, the Aldmeri Dominion is more like a bunch of Nazis. Seriously, listen to that fucker in Markarth says how the Aldmeri Dominion will prove how better Mer (elves, namely high elves) are better than Men, one century at a time. Well, I say listen not so much as in 'listen to him spout off' and more of 'try to resist the urge to kill him until afterwards'.

Make sure that you're carrying lots of Petty/Lesser/Common soul gems, so that Petty/Lesser/Common souls go into them rather than your fancy soul gems. Souls always go into the shittiest container they can find, which means Azura's Star is the last place they'll wind up if they can manage it, and if you don't have any crappy soul gems, crappy souls you collect will wind up in your nice soul gems.
As for common Grand souls, try Giants and Mammoths.
I have a question for you all: as someone who's only RPG experience is having played Mass Effect, how much fun would Skyrim be to someone like myself? I know it's a stupid question to ask considering that everyone is different, but with all the hype this game has at the moment I'm inclined to grab it and see what the fuss is about. Is Skyrim a niche experience, or does it accommodate those who've never dabbled in an Elder Scrolls game?
Thanks for any replies!
Well its my first Elder scrolls game, I was a little skeptical after I disliked Oblivion (played it for about 5 minutes at a friends) but Skyrims frankly awesome. The games considerably less linear than mass effect, as you can completely ignore the main quest after the start of the game and forge your own path. The main stories pretty good though, and they're benefits for following it at least for an hour or two. Its definitely worth picking up, my game of the year so far, and I doubt anything else is gonna change that.
If you like sandbox games like Red Dead Redemption, you will probably like Skyrim.

Also, anybody else noticed that the Ancient Shrouded Cowl is completely bugged? If I wear it, my hair (spikes) dissapear but the cowl doesn't appear at all. On top of that, when I'm wearing the cowl, I can select another piece of headgear to wear and than that helmet/cloak will appear.
Make no mistake. War is coming. With all it's glory, and all it's horror...
I just killed Grelod the Kind (at the riften orphanage). I had some fun burning the body a bit, then I tried to put it up on the open rafters by tcling myself. However, I coudlnt' seem to pick her up, so i turned off tcl. This resulted in her sliding beneath the floor with just 1 hand sticking up. That'll give the orphans nightmares.
I think i discovered something pretty cool, when you get to Black Reach go to the very top of the ruins(there's a throne/chair there) and yell Fus Roh Dah at the giant sphere, to be precise, i shouted at where the cable and the sphere connects, not sure if what happened was a coincidence and it was meant to happen anyway or if that triggered it but:
Spoiler
When i shouted at the sphere, the sphere clanked and then a giant named red dragon with blue stripes flew in, started vomiting fire all over the place and then flew out of the ruins to fight something, i ran as fast as i could and managed to see him fighting a giant, surprisingly the Dragon was almost at full health by the time i got there, i killed the giant first, soul trapped him and killed the dragon.
To whomever said dragons were piss easy, keep in mind they will start to scale with your level.Spoiler
The ancient dragons who show up eventually according to the wiki have several thousand hp and their bite attack can do 300 damage, so I'm going to start pumping more into my hp since I'm only level 29 or so right now, I've got a lot of stamina and I can always use enchantments.
They're both cockends really, I've run into a load of Nords complaining about Elves and intimating they should finish the job Ysgramor started. It's just that when I was reading in game about the Falmer I realised that the Nords had personally exterminated two whole civilisations and helped push a third into potentially risky actions that led to it's apparent demise as well. Given that some of the Altmer wizards are old enough to remember what it was like before Ysgramor ever turned up, and given the proclivities of the Nords towards Elf genocide, it suddenly made sense that the Aldmeri Dominion took the opportunity to finally break the power of the Nords and their Imperial descendants. No, the Aldmeri Dominion is more like a bunch of Nazis. @Nalkor:
Ah, i think that was me. I took it back when i started encountering Frost Dragons in every town i visited though. :P
Also, my Legendary Ebony Battle axe now deals 142 delicious damage on a single hit.

Finally maxed smithing, enchanting, blocking and one-handed; hello armour and resistances up the wazzo.
Anyone else get that nifty 30+ stam/mana/hp amulet? I haven't found anything better yet.
Find yourself needed a heap of soul gems? Just take a treck through a Dwemer ruin and pick up all the ones off the constructs. Then loot the place and use the money to buy more gems!
While being able to upgrade weapons and armour is nice (damage and armour boosts rock), I found there will always be that hierarchy of gear (ie. iron < steel < dwarven < steel plate < orcish < dragon bone plate < daedric for heavy armour), so long as they're all at the same level of upgrades, which is really only one extra crafting material, there isn't a reason you shouldn't be maxing smithing if you're doing anything with it. After taking the "heavy armour doesn't weigh anything, u mad physics?" perk, the only excuse for wearing other types of heavy armour other than daedric is for vanity reasons (lets face it, you're a tank in anything you wear, a few armour points less isn't going to impact on anything less than huge boss fights).
Does anyone else find that it randomly crashes to desktop? That's really my only major issue with it, next to the UI.
Now that I've plundered many ruins and imperial camps, it might be time to actually start some missions.

So wait, you can, for example, take either Savage Strike or Critical Charge to be able to take Paralizing Strike, instead of both? Neat!

Rusty, if you have max enchanting, break down that amulet and make a +62 health / +62 stamina amulet instead. Although imho the best usage for Amulets and Rings is magic resistance + something else, you can't put MR on anything else.
Malachi, you can reset all points from the button on the top-right.
Thanks for the tip, but it's a shame that I'll have to can the amulet in the first place. I take it a gold emerald amulet should do the trick for that one then?
#550
Even a silver one will do, but you'll need a grand soul for it. I would recommend making a +25% magic resistance / +31% stamina regeneration amulet and ring (I call mine "Amulet of Battle" and "Ring of Battle") for straight up fights.
