Is the Company of Heroes franchise dead?

Imperial Guard Is the Company of Heroes franchise dead?

The community support and player base has remained strong after all of these years. Friends and colleagues rave about matches they've had over the weekend around the water-cooler. It's just bloody awesome! But where is THQ in all of this? Where is my expansion to the best real-time strategy game of all time?

Tales of Valour was released 2 years ago. Ahem. As a die-hard fan of this franchise I am wondering what I am supposed to do with the $60 I have set aside for the next instalment of the Company of Heroes franchise?

I am a member of the Relic brand-loyal, thirty-something demographic, with two kids, a dog, a job, a Volkswagen and live within 3kms of Vancouver (Canada) city centre. I like military strategy games such as Supreme Commander, Dawn of War, Panzer General, and FPS titles such as Metro:2033, Battlefield 3 and Red Orchestra II. I also favour tabletop Flames of War and Warhammer miniature hobby games when not trail running, or kayaking.

If this data is useful and assists marketing manager John Bon Jollie to give the green light to the development of another title please be my guest and
incorporate it into as colourful a pie chart as is necessary.

See you at the front (The Emperor, ahem, protects.),

If you expect an answer, you wont get any.. Your guess is as good as any's right now. Most players (including me) do think there will be a Coh2, in any form.
The recent interest they showed by creating the latest patch PLUS their very recent sponsoring (as in, giving pricemoney) of the GameReplays Sundaynightfights is not something they would do if they didnt need to keep the coh fanbase strong and going.
    Now thát's a Knight's Cross.

IMHO, CoH is the pinnacle of RTS. I am sure some announcement regarding this extraordinary franchise is right around the corner. In the meantime, please visit out beloved Armory section and peruse the various mods we have available. There is also a plethora of maps as well. I myself have over 6Gb in my scenarios folder alone. Allow me to provide a link to get you started.

The CoH franchise is not dead, that much we know, something is coming, that much we know. WHAT is coming.. we don't really know. CoH 2 is the guess atm. And certainly a good guess. But that is really it, Relic said after closing CoHO that something would come, and we've had small hints here and there, like the CoH Team hiring, the spotlight on casters in the community and sponsoring the sunday night fights over at gr.org

So all i can say is.. Something is coming, what it is i have no idea about.

The Company of Heroes franchise is just beginning.

I didn't expect the community or anyone for that matter to respond with any certainty. It was a lone gamers cry into the wilds of cyberspace ... plainly obvious this community still has fangs.

Fangs? We got mp40s, and Tompsons . It's not dead, i usually pop on from time to time, however i rather play COHO damn why it had to go..

    Winter is coming...The Stark...Russian front... (I'm so very sorry, I couldn't resist)

Like you said, ToV came out two years ago, it was patched recently and the community is still supported. We will see something, but what it is...

    Nyah Best hurry CoH2

Well with the announcement of a new MechWarrior Online game coming (hopefully) second Quarter 2012 they had best do something sooner than later.

I have loved CoH and had a 5 year sentence, but being a tried true Mech head, I did a 5 year sentence with that one too, then added a 10 year longing/pining period after that, that longing/pining period is almost over.

Sadly and Happily, CoH will be but a memory for at least another 5 years after MWO releases.

Well all we can do is wait patiently at the moment. Although i'd rather not wait :P

Yeah. Dane honestly there just isn't another RTS title with as much polish and depth, it would be a bloody tragedy if THQ just let that IP rot.

Quite true, quite true. CoH is my favorite RTS, and i'd certainly like to see that expanded upon No other game i have sunk so much time into it. Beside just playing. Casting and watching casts of other people.

Ditto pretty much all of the above sentiment. Even though I haven't played CoH a lot lately due to a shortage of friends to play with, considering my friends mainly play comp stomps due to skill level, I still fondly watch ToH and all the other CoH casts around with much interest and glee. As far as more conventional RTS games go, playing HoI3 at the moment which is also an (unconventional) RTS going by the literal definition of the words, CoH would be one of the best I have ever bought and played, and even today I get cravings to revisit it.

Well some people seem pretty convinced, talking about rumour columns and a lot of gaming sites ARE talking about CoH as a possibility..

If it is CoH, then I just hope it won't be a 2nd ToV. I was so excited about ToV but turned out to be quite a dissapointment.

I was quite pleased. Might have something to do with expectations i suppose. But i don't think it's going to be another ToV, Partly because ToV was about making the best of a bad situation (DLC attempt that had to be scrapped) and also because Relic learned their lesson from it. So we'll see what it is. pretty sure it is going to be a sequel. Although i suppose i can't completely rule out an expansion.

  21. #21
An expansion after all this time... Unlikely, I think. Besides, it's time for a new, jaw-dropping engine. When CoH came out, Essence engine and the possibilities it gave was what drew me in the most. The rather amazing rest of the game was a bonus.

EDIT: So, apparently NOTHING from THQ was announced whatsoever. This is getting a bit annoying.

yeah, I'd give up - all been based on rumour from the start.
enjoy coh for what it is and/or move onto newer games (although nothing still touches coh in my book).

I did ask the very same question Relic employee recently and the answer i got was as expected.
He stated that at this time he cannot reveal any details as to what is planned but CoH is not dead and there is a something coming for this franchise.

Nope. I know that much. A lot of things pointing in that direction, as said, from the activity relic is pouring into CoH at the moment, to the fact that currently CoH is a lot more active than DoW 2. I mean i think in general there are 3 times as many people active in CoH than DoW 2. In terms of casters.. Well are there any one active there at all ? In CoH there's.. Well i don't know the exact number really. I know there's my channel, KrebsCoHO, InukiTV, Inverse. Plus a whole bunch of people who broadcast their games live.

    So generally much more active.

  26. #26
The game is dying though, thanks to the many players that hack now. There is some life left in it amongst friends and in tournies but as far as ranked games go no there are just too many hackers/cheats now which is sad.

I play a few times a week, I've not felt like anyone's hacking but then I'm not playing at a very high level.

I think I got accused of hacking a month or so back... I laughed out loud at that. "YOU ARE FIRING ROCKETS AT MY TROOPS BUT YOU CAN'T SEE THEM" "Dude, I can HEAR where they are!"

The game isn't dying and most cases of suspected hacking generally tend to be more about the player getting outsmarted rather than hacks. I play at a high level and i might occasionally.. very occasionaly, get drophacked. That is it. And the very few times i've suspected hacking i checked the replay and found out that there was none.

@Gorb, Don't know how you could be surprised; COH has won a stack of awards, THQ would be silly to not cash in on that.

    It's a criminally under-rated RTS game.

In a state of perpetual confusion.
This thread is for discussions about future versions/updates to CoH, not for bitching about possible hackers in the existing game. Off-topic posts have been deleted.

If you think you have evidence of hacking or cheating, report it to Relic. We can't do anything about it here, so whining on the forums isn't going to achieve anything.

British deadpan for the win, naturally.

Though I am intrigued as to what CoH 2 brings to the table, especially in terms of engine advancements. I'm still amazed at the depth the DoW I engine has to it (despite successive expansions bolting on hardcoded extensions), and I have barely had the time to touch on Essence/Essence2 in terms of modding. Even if the game CoH didn't personally appeal to me (and I'm not sure CoH 2 will either; I am simply and genuinely sick of the WW1/WW2 settings), the technical quality of the engine is something that is going to impress me and/or appeal.

Can't say it's a huge problem for me. As long as the game is good and i don't have to jump through 25 hoops to play it every single time.

I must not fear. Fear is the mind-killer. Fear is the little-death that brings total obliteration. I will face my fear. I will permit it to pass over me and through me. And when it has gone past I will turn the inner eye to see its path. Where the fear has gone there will be nothing. Only I will remain.
