I think this has been tried before... but even so I'm in!
Won't work, but I'm in (only about 50 active people or so left on tanis)
Ill ad some videos of my modding efforts :

I'd like them to, not like they are gonna make HW3 anyway :P ...bastards
I r modder (dur)...my ModDB page is http://www.moddb.com/members/bloodfleet/mods
btw my XFire is raaminator if you wanna play my mods (or any other) I will play if I am online.
LOL wish they would, but its never going to happen!
at least they could release some of the original uncompiled lua scripts that we are having problems with or at least i am....
afaik all the files from the hw2.big are ok now thanks to S110 who did http://www.moddb.com/games/homeworld...older/#2000826
You have my vote. For what little it's worth.
Same. You have my vote. For what little it's worth.
Destroying things is easy.
Creating things is hard.
Creating things in order to watch them explode is just plain fun.
Explosion Damage Script, Scripting Tutorial
same, im in but its pointless... :/
I am in, tho sad that it wont likely happen... even tho I bet they have nothing to lose by giving the source code out.
I am a modder, not really much else to say. Tho my xfire is rapid107 if you want to chat about hw2 or modding.
I'm in.
Would depend on if it even still exists. Not to be negative but not all companies will keep code as old and outdated as this around. Would be nice. Take a look at what has been done with the Freespace code by a volunteer community.

Yeah I like Freespace as much as Homeworld, I wish Homeworld could have the chance that Freespace got with the source code project it has. The game is so ridiculously improved over retail these days lol.
I'm in
Hey . . . I'm in too :-D
Don't give up hope . . . maybe HW2 is a 'bit' outdated but the community and interest is still pretty strong. I can count at least over 25k clicks at my mod since december and there are a lot of mods wich are much more popular and got a lot more attention. Like Complex and Startrek: Continuum and even a few new mods still popping up out of nowhere. :-) . . .
Only because the count of active public modders and teams may not be that big does not mean we are dead. There is still a good amount left playing and / or modding homeworld today.
So .. let's get our signs :-D
Still awaiting a reply from THQ and Relic, I'll keep you posted on how that turns out.
count me in too.
stingy buggers aren't they?
Sign the HW3 petition then. So far it has an embarrassingly low number of signatories.
I would be interested in source code release and am interested in a HW3 game...
10% of life is what happens to you and 90% is what you DO about it
Signed the Petition. We may need to make a bit promotion for it.
Oh . . .
A Homeworld 3 - developed while carfully stick to it's roots - like Blizzard has done with Starcraft 2, will definetly introduce a new generation of Space RTS.
Well, in my opinion every RTS gamer who loves demanding gameplay will try a Homeworld 3.
As long as they don't start to kill the community with DLC and other stuff wich may conflict with modding and if they do a little public promotion so every one interested knows that there is coming something like that, it will definetly sell.
At least for Aliens vs Predator (2010) and Spacemarine the very limited amount of content (mainly maps) in of the initial release and the fact, that even gamemodes and maps where sold as DLC killed big parts of the community - at least in my opinion.
I mean .. you can sell a single big expansion or addon for an RTS with a full new Campain or introducing new units and gameplay.Interested players may buy it - like it was done in the good old days of Command and Conquer and Co. If you have single maps or stuff missing for multiplayer - you may buy it for 3-10 € - but it will annoy you because of the use / cost factor for yourself.
If they decide to really sell something like skins or alternate models wich may even fit for our senario here with homeworld 3 (like in spacemarine or eve online) I don't think that a single "Outfit" should really cost more then 1 € in relation to the price of the original product.
The addition problem is - we, who modded games - are used to create and use 'free' stuff. The gamecommunity is able to make awesome amounts of maps and other genius stuff - like the complex mod - the shader 2.0 - oh ...starwars warlords at the beginning of HW2.
there was a time I had 100 + maps in most of my games RTS. And today . . . you may get 5-10 (4 or 6 in AVP) and they tell you that there will be no map editor and 3 new maps will cost about 5-10 € - When there might be 100+ only because a good modding group will add them for free if they where able to mod.
Publishes do not see the fact that modding increases a games value over time - even if the developer does not invest anything. Starcraft is still 35 €+ and I would definetly buy it again. Whenever I get in there - there is new stuff to try out. Not everything is 'gold ' in there but sometimes you really get some diamonts.
For Spacemarine - as DLC example, nice game really - but I won't advice someone to buy it if he is not a fan of Warhammer already. It's at about 30€+ at the moment but it really lacks content and longtime motivation.
I don't want to start a DLC discussion, but as THQ seems to like this abivalent product-strategy, I needed to add it.
Whenever i see a new game with great potential popping up without any mod- or at least mapping-support i feel really sad and start thinking that the great times of mapping and modding is over.
But then - there are some shiny heroes like Bethesda who opened a completly modifyable world to the player with Skyrim and really try to enforce their modding community.
So I think there is still hope for us modders and gamers of the old school. There is still room for a Homeworld like it was meant to be before Reclic got forced to release HW2 and abbadonned so many of the planned alpha features and stuff.
All we have seen in the early shots of HW2 would be possible today and even more could be done.
Regards
Mr.Thi / -=[F@LC0]=-
P.S. ... and it should definetly developed for PC in the first place. Supreme commander 2 is the best example that fitting a genius modern RTS on console will result in a nearly total fail - at least for those who knew the previous product.
Homeworld 2 has many fans still, but all aren't here. Try Facebook or MySpace for petitions. Even so, I'm SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO in!
Release hw2's source code already!
I'm in![]()
I have contacted THQ Studios and Relic. I am awaiting their reply...hope for the best!
I'm in for the source code, it would be good to see mods go further, especially since this game is extremely inventive with the mod possibilities. Although, I am doubtfull that THQ will listen, knowing their track record, they are unlikely to negotiate, they are extremely corporate, only if we had something of value (tons of mulaoo) would they accept - that is something I would not make a compromise for. I'm sure Relic would have been more generous, but this is not Relic, it was Relic that created HW2 and own it, although why THQ holds onto such an 'old' game without doing squat with it, just keeping it as a prize, is beyond logic.

Now thats a name i havent seen in ages! btw nice tuts evillejedi.
I'm in; try posting on facebook.
I'm in also
I sent it like 5 mins after I posted my previous post, no response yet, not even for the first message I sent in February.
If I don't get a response by the end of April, I'll send in a hard copy of the message.
Here's what I had in mind:
We collaborate on a message, make sure it's well written, and includes everyone's name that signed the petition. Make it a real tearjerker.
All of us here dredge up our best work, screenshots, renders, drawings, anything related to Homeworld 2 or Homeworld 2 modding, and I'll print them in large, high quality pictures. Then, I'll include the message and the pictures in a fancy manila folder and send it to Relic HQ.
We COULD go wayyyyyy over the top and send this packet to everyone here, like I mail it to you to personally sign, you mail it to the next guy to sign, and so on, until the last guy sends it in to Relic in Vancouver. I think the more stamps the better, the thing is, it might get lost en route to somebody's house, or Relic. If you have a tablet, I could send you the petition sheet via email so you can sign it, or if you have a scanner, scan your signature (your Tanis screen name, not your actual name), send it via email, and I'll shop it in. With any luck they'll take us seriously enough to release the source code.
I agree with with you, that would be very symbolic of our determination. If I have anywork, any recent work, although only affiliated to HW now, I still consent to to you sending my own artwork. I would also send a sample of Norsehounds fan fics and Talros's concepts.
... don't you think that some post service in some of countries may lose this package? The Russian Post in Soviet Russia, for example, really LOVES to lose letters and packages...and so on, until the last guy sends it in to Relic in Vancouver

For those in difficult location, I would suggest passing along a scanned PDF version, after this it may not be authenticate, but we must include everyone else.
I got BC'ed supports this motion
(can't find a dotted line though)
@Relic: Buy yourselves back from THQ and make HW3 already.
Yes, which is why, in the next sentence, I said there's a possibility of it getting lost in the mail, and suggested 2 alternatives to mailing it from person to person.... don't you think that some post service in some of countries may lose this package? The Russian Post in Soviet Russia, for example, really LOVES to lose letters and packages...
Most people have a scanner or a tablet, or access to one, so it shouldn't be to hard to get everyone on board. I'll print out all the pics you send in and include them with the message, just make sure they're really high res.
I think it's time to affix my seal to this document. Let's hope for the best.
I hope its not too late, but I would like to also give my support for the release of HW2's source code. I would love to see HW2 updated to OpenGL 4.2 and some Linux ports; if possible I think it would be kinda cool to replace the Gamespy API with Steamworks.
Count me in.. but seriously we would need at least like 500.000 votes minimum to get at least some attention from Relic & THQ regarding that.
So, 40 odd out of 500 000... Right, well it seems then that I am more likely to build a spitfire on my meagre budget than for relic to take us seriously.. Ugh... It's things like these that reduce from my reason to get up in the morning. I would support the hardcopy idea, but, it becomes impractical at the amount of signatures we seem to need. And if you send them a 30inch package, they might thinks it's a bomb![]()
It seems to me that Relic has buried for a long time already Homeworld. I think us very little, but it is better to try. I am also in.
you think if we flood their inboxes they might listen?
What the heck, add me to the list of people who want this as well.
