Black Screen on game start

I was previously a big fan of the Age of Empires series and was wanting to try out a different RTS game of which there seem to be a distinct lack.
So, I recently purchased a DVD version of CoH.

I installed the game on my system. It seemed to update all the necessary patches etc, which took a while. I rebooted, but then when the game tried to run, all I got was a black screen in a large window on my desktop and nothing. I tried running it a few times but eventually gave up.
I'm guessing it's some compatibility issue on my Win 7 system with what is basically an old game.

Please advise.

Most problems like this can be solved by updating your drivers, but I'll take that you already did that. I remember a friend of mine would get something similar to this and he fixed by adding a line to his short-cut. Unfortunately I do not remember what the line was. But I'll get back to you with that.

OK, I think I worked out the problem.

It seems that this game can only be played by registering and logging in with an account even though I only wanted to play the campaign part of the game against the computer rather than other members. I had previously tried to play without logging in.

I created an account earlier and logged in. I started the tutorial. It all worked fine. I logged out. Now, when I try to log in, it says the username and password are not valid in spite of my using them a few hours earlier??

It's one thing after another with this game!

The game did this to me a few times. It usually was because I wasn't able to connect to Relic-Online. That is a possibility. If that fails you can always try to reset your password. Also, did you create the account offline? That happens sometimes, not sure as to why, but it happens. But my honest opinion is to uninstall and reinstall. Oh yeah and check if you're up to date V2.602.
