Apparently, I can't give other ships the defense field ability just by copying and pasting the lines that determine the field properties in the DFG frigate (homeworld 1). Does anyone know what to tweak to enable that for a ship? I'm trying to give it to the heavy cruisers. (it's such a PAIN to try to keep them surrounded by DFG frigates; the sphere formation just doesn't keep 'em close enough.)

you can't give abilities outside each ship folder. all the unit abilities are hard coded to each slot.
Wow, really? That's too bad. Hex edit something then? Anyone have any idea what values to search for, and in what file?
You'd have to mess with the source code to do something like that. I'm not sure if anyone's managed to bring the relic released source code to a playable state yet though.

there was one person who managed to allow you to manually pilot a ship using ship view but that project got abandonned ages ago.
Heh, and I'm no programmer. Ah well, thanks anyway. I guess I should just see if I can find my HW2 CD then, and maybe do something unique with that. I don't like some of the game mechanics there, though. In a lot of ways hw1 and even Cataclysm were better. Can't wait to see what they do for hw3!
