Can't wait to see this today. I've never liked the pure horror genre, so I'm glad this isn't (one of the reasons I won't even touch the original Alien, despite loving Aliens).

Just got back from watching it and ive found that im left with more questions than answers. It was certainly a good film and when you leave the cinema it helps to go over it in your head as that helps you work parts of it out. I look forward to the sequel.

  9. #109
Sod it, im gonna have to go see it during the day tomorrow. Too many people saying it's good, and how it is very much the prequel to Alien.

  10. #110
It is but it isnt a prequel.

Just went and saw it today, the cinema was pretty empty, dunno if that's because everyone avoids the first day of release or because it was in 3D or the movie is magically a flop.

SO i just came back from watching prometheus in 3D.

The 3D effect was actually rather subtle much of the time, as i can't remember any parts that really lunged out at me. i can only assume that this is due to ripley being aware that as with any piece of technology, it's best used in moderation. No real complaints here.

going to watch this and alien trilogy again. maybe resurrection for shits & giggles.

Went and seen it tonight, It was really good in my opinion, though I never saw it in 3D so can't comment on it. I already wear specs and wearing specs on specs is a pain in the fucking arse.

I think it's definitely worth seeing even if you're not an Alien fan. It's not a pure 'horror' movie, though I does have its disturbing moments. The story was well thought through, engaging and interesting, and the visuals were pretty breathtaking at points.

The 3d was superlative, Scott really knocked it out of the park, he is better than Cameron in using it to add texture to nearly every scene - very much a depth addition that I would like to see in ALL films going forward.

    Spoiler

The biggest fault of the movie, which I think is because it considers itself hard sci fi so no need for handholding, is that it literally jumps straight in GO GO GO. If I had not got the online videos (TED lecture, Shore vid calls etc.) I would have been lost. Pretty much the whole two hours hoons along.

Sorry, I worded that badly. I meant more 'could he have been a replicant the whole time' what with false memories and all that. A lot is left for the audience to interpret in Scott's movies.

I've heard that the originol plan for that was that deckard was going to turn out to be a replicant but it was shot by the executives. So it's actually still a genuine question. Was he a replicant and it just wasn't shown, or was the idea tottally scrapped.

The movie leaves it open but either the actor himself or the director said so somewhere. Still until I read it myself I often thought to myself if he really was, after re-watching the movie ofcourse. And the movies ive seen from scott have always been good. I do want to see Prometheus but I feel the spec on spec action all up in my face with the 3d specs and my glasses would bug me too much to enjoy the movie. Ill wait for the DVD release, sometime before the end of the year hopefully.

    @ramrod.
You misinterpreted my annoyance with that scene.

too light-headed and tired to explain properly what bothers me.

@john, yeah, i realize its not officially a prequel, which is why i noted it, as that event does disconnect it from alien completely. It can be considered a "spiritual" prequel if you wish.

Ford stated that Deckard wasn't a replicant, but Scott has said that he was on several occasions. Scenes that were restored in the "Final Cut" version of the film also hint more heavily toward him being a replicant as well.

As for Blade Runner being based on a book (or story, anyway), I've always thought that it was kind of a shitty adaptation (not a bad movie, but not a good adaptation of the story.) Then again, most Phillip K. Dick stories are adapted poorly from the source material.

    Regarding Prometheus

    Spoiler

Don't know if this has been mentioned before, but good news for those who like it: if it does well (and it will) 2 and 3 will get made as well apparently.

Sequel to BladeRunner is being seriously considered by Scott too btw (*groan*) - as in he's sketching out plot ideas.

@Loco - I'd not looked super closely at all that stuff, was just paraphrasing the director as he's pretty much the authority on the film he made as far as I'm concerned. The stuff about the Dick book, is fair enough to some extent, but then I think it's not hugely unreasonable to consider the book and film as separate works. If a key character died in a film, but not in the book, you could not say "yeah, but he's actually alive in the film, cos he is in the book" - no: they're dead in the film, alive in the book, because they're really separate works at the end of the day. Perhaps Scott's execution was poor or whatever, perhaps there's plot holes the size of a spaceship, who knows.

A director's opinion on their own film can actually spoil it sometimes. Donnie Darko is one example for me, the film was strange, unexplained and kind of beautiful, but the director's actual vision behind it is rather inane and jarring I think and made me think "....erm.....what?". So I guess to some extent I choose to live with my own interpretation of the film, because I prefer it. However, I am aware it's that, my own interpretation.

I would have given the movie 4/5 stars, then there was a biologist who said "Darwinism" and my rating dropped to 2 stars. Loved the movie plot, loved the atmosphere, its below alien but way above alien 3.

But Darwinism? In future? Really? Could you insult my intelligent anymore movie?

I liked how the scientists were dicks and less proffesional than the random mercs. Like they could be sloppy with their chat and their methadology because they were so far out of their comfort zones they didn't care.

It always amuses me how in films scientists are super efficient business like robots after a lifetime of lounging around on campus and mercs are all ludicrously off the rails and unpredictible despite having a lifetime of military discipline prior to that point.

Okay, that's off topic, but I have to finally ask: What the fuck is the reason people have so much beef with Alien 3? Is it somehow inconsistent with the previous 2 movies or something? I watched all 3 Alien movies in quick succession, and I think it wasn't chronologically (Aliens first, then Alien 3, then the first one, IIRC), but I think #3 is a very good movie, a nice finale to the whole trilogy, and I found it VERY atmospheric. I actually think I like it more than the oh- so-revered 2nd movie, because it was more of a SciFi horror than an action movie, and I prefer horrors.
