Currently my laptop has 2x2GB of RAM and I'm thinking of changing to 2x4GB, I just bought Battlefield 3 (on sale) and I can't quite run it at the best settings, would adding RAM help at all? Or are graphics generally more reliant on graphics cards/CPU?

I know generally more RAM is better, but I don't know *how* it makes it better and to what degree. So do you think it would be worth it?

Your Graphics card is your bottleneck on BF3, although to be honest i'm inclined to think that even with a upgraded GPU, your CPU will still not allow BF3 to run on fullEDIT: Looking again your CPU should be fine, it is mostly the Graphic card. Unless your problem is with load times your RAM is fine.

I'm pretty sure more RAM would help with whatever programs you're running in the background or at the same time with BF3, if any. I know that I certainly noticed the difference in performance when I upgraded my laptop from 4gb to 8gb. But, as already pointed out, a better GPU would help.

I know I won't be able to run BF3 on highest, I just want "higher"

I think I'll get the RAM the load times are quite long when starting up, only a $50 or so investment anyway.

The ram is likely not to help you in anyway. Not in terms of FPS, load times, etc. You would be better spent using that 50 dollars on a SSD or a better graphics card somehow.
Apple wants to give everyone "the business."

Ram isn't going to allow you to run BF3 at a higher graphics setting, unless your running a lot of background programs while you play, 4GB should be plenty. Your system bottlenecks way before the ram becomes an issue, at least in the processor department. Out of interest what G card are you using? The best I could see was the ATI Mobility Radeon 5800 series, but it doesn't specify which 5800, or am I missing something?

If not gaming, what does RAM actually help with? Would adding more RAM help programs startup faster (like less wait time between clicking the icon and it actually starting) or help with boot speed?

Every application running on your machine will need access to all kinds of data to do whatever it does - this data is kept in memory. If you don't have enough memory then your OS will have to juggle things between your harddrive (which is very slow, compared to RAM) and your RAM. If you have insufficient RAM then adding more will have a massive performance impact, but once you have enough then adding even more will do very little (since Vista, Windows does preload things you use frequently into memory - more RAM will allow it to do more of this so there is a little more benefit than there used to be).

I think 4Gb is enough for the majority of people at the moment - but you may see some small benefit from moving to 8 in terms of loading times. This shows the memory usage of BF3 plus three browsers (not entirely sure why...). In total the peak usage is less than 2Gb, leaving another 2Gb for Windows and anything else running.

If you want to improve boot and application startup times then you should buy an SSD (but only if your laptop has space for that plus a conventional drive). If yopu want better gaming performance you need a better graphics card, but with a laptop you don't really have any options.

Ok, thanks a bunch for the information! I'll prob skip on the RAM then since it'll be pointless.

Your system looks to be pretty good, well, for a laptop. It should run really well. You card is about the same as a 5670 desktop card which plays battlefield good on my syste.

IME, lower the resolution to 720p or even less will improve game play tremendously.

also, uninstall as much laptop crapware that was preinstalled on your laptop will help as well.

from command prompt run msconfig.exe and see what all programs startup at boot. most are just pre-load modules that don't need to be loaded. you can select "diagnostic Startup" for a bare bootup to see if there is any difference.

run hijackthis and see if you are infected with malware. just copy the results to the www.hijackthis.de Dont forget the www. or it may send you to the wrong site.

how many processes are running when you run Task Manager (right+click task bar). A default windows install will have about 32 and typical complete installs have in the mid-40s.

    Good luck

    On the imaginary axis.
There's a few things that could be removed, namely the WMP Network service, all the Apple crap if you're not using an iThing, Bluetooth if you're not using a Bluetooth device (mouse, possibly headset, cellphone, not much else). The ArcSoft daemon may or may not be required to play back DVDs/Blu-Rays, but you could try turning it off and see what happens. If you're using Rainmeter, you could probably remove the Sidebar.

Otherwise, I don't really see much. Chances are your computer's already giving the maximum performance it can, with the possible exception of an SSD improving load times (but those can feel cramped on laptops, beware).

I don't really know how to read the results, I got several of the red X's, but the vistors assessment says they are mostly safe.
A lot of those red Xs are probably from uninstalling all of those programs. You can run ccleaner to clean up those thing and rerun to see if things change.

Did you run msconfig? that will allow you to temporarily disable a lot of stuff to see what kind of performance increase you can expect.

You can run hijackthis to go even further and disable a lot of unneeded services. just make sure you run system restore in windows first to recover things if needed.

I normally just disable everything to see how things run, and re-enable them back if needed.

    luck

ps. have you checked battlefield 3 forums. you may get better help there as this is not a relic game.

@FF I disabled the apple crap and the arcsoft thing (I thought it was my wireless, but after googling its my webcam), but I need the bluetooth thing to run on startup or it won't work if I want to use it later.

I regularly use CCleaner to remove unused registry entries after I uninstall things and those x's still show up. Would it be safe to just tick the boxes and tell hijackthis to "fix" them? Also how do I use hijackthis to disable unneeded services?

I tried running a diagnostic startup with msnconfig, but a bunch of stuff I normally use turned off (system recovery, wireless, aero theme) so I ended up turning everything back on and restarting, then going through the list manually to turn things off after. I only have about 50 things running on startup now, in msconfig I have 5 things on in "startup", but what can I turn off in "services"?

I'm not having any actual troubles with bf3, just wondering if I can improve my system performance a bit.

The only real thing you can do to incease performance with BF3 is a better video card, period. You CPU isn't your limit, it's your graphics performance.

You can get better frames per seconds by lower in-game graphical settings or in-game resolutions.

Changing windows settings doesn't really affect BF3 performance at all.

hopefully you system is more responsive. but check the BF3 forums for other users with similar graphics to see what kind of fps they get and compare for yourself. That's about all you can really do.

if your performance is much worse than others, then it's possible you have a virus or some sort of malware slowing you down. but if you get the same fps as others, then you're probably just fine.

    Good luck
