I'm not sure why they did that. I hope it's for a good reason.
I'm not sure if it occured at the same time/in the same way, but Craster sacrificing the male babies to the white walkers definitely occurs in the books.

yeah, but it's never actually seen, iirc, and he's most definitely not caught by jon, who is then not subsequently KTFO.

Right, in the books it's a implied on the side that he must sacrifice them. There's no confrontation with Jon or direct reveal that it's the white walkers. That's a pretty substantial change.

Hey, for once I agree with Starfisher on both issues raised.
Never got that lusty vibe from Stannis, maybe it's because I didn't get the something between him and the red lady until

    Book 2

Of course, the last scene with Craster is even bigger. Someone seeing a White Walker should be huge enough to call off the entire expedition, after dealing with the one who pacts with them, so Jon Snow can't be left alive. As said a huge deviation from the books, maybe they plan to cram that certain bit from the next book into it somehow?

You guys mentioned that they cut Stannis' daughter Shireen, were is this mentioned? Must've missed it, but I'm not happy if the crippled child and her scary fool Patchface were cut.

Other thing I noticed, wasn't the prisoner Robb sent with his message a Frey? No issue of course.
Very happy with Arya, Gendry, Lommy, Hot Pies, and the prisoners (minus a missing nose). Jaqen might not have that eccentric hair, but they perfectly recreated the impression I got when first reading about him: For such a suave guy to end up with those monsters in a cage, there must be a very dark reason.
Salladhor is as flamboyant as one could wish for, and Varys got a nice little scene to demonstrate his importance at Tyrion's expense. This instance of highlighting the importance of a schemer suits me better than the recent spotlights on Littlefinger.
One step closer to the end of the decadent Eldar race.

The person Robb sent was half Frey half Lannister, and not so young. Your mentioning the scene between Varys and Tyrion reminds me.

    Book 2

I must not fear. Fear is the mind-killer. Fear is the little-death that brings total obliteration. I will face my fear. I will permit it to pass over me and through me. And when it has gone past I will turn the inner eye to see its path. Where the fear has gone there will be nothing. Only I will remain.

Shaitan: I'm pretty sure Shae isn't in the red keep in the show; she's at a whore house, just as she was in the book.

I'm almost positive they mentioned her working in the kitchens in the last episode. I also seem to recall him saying something about the same bed as Ned Stark. Which would imply she's in the tower of the hand of the king.

It's really irrelevant where she is. Her purpose is clear within the story, that varys always knows whats going on.

It would confuse the viewers if she was in a different place each time. This is an example of a case where I agree with the Show's creators on the changes they made. As mentioned, the only drawback is that it doesn't work as a big display of Varys' abilities for him to immediately find her.

So, they're spreading the 3rd book for two seasons. If the same happens to book 4 and 5 that are just as long, we're looking at 8 seasons to get through all the books so far.

I sure hope this is going to last that long.

Mala. Think what may be a big issue conerning this tv show is just how anyone can die. Regular non reading viewers may find it a shock to find there fav character dead, and so not having any need to continue watching. We shall see just how many series this show gains. I dont think it will last the distance tbh. 2 more seasons tops.

Yeah there's no way it gets past the third book unless they either change it substantially or drop like 2/3rds of the fourth and fifth books.

All I heard regarding 4 & 5 is that the story isn't going to be divided by geographical area like the books were. Instead, it'll be chronologically ordered. Don't quite remember where I read that though.

There's a certain hilarious irony to all of this. GRRM wrote the books because he had been constantly frustrated by budget constraints while writing TV episodes, and wanted to imagine something big. He does so, it becomes a TV series, and now budget constraints are cutting into the story. Oops!

Books 4 & 5 have a *lot* of gumph that can be cut out for tv. Many of the minor characters' stories can be told in a fraction of what was used. Hell, many of the major ones can too.

A certain wench ambles around Westeros pointlessly for a very long time. That can be cut to flashes for one...

I agree. Although I enjoyed the book series, there were several plot points and characters that could be ruthlessly cut.

they already got rid of at least one character who survived thus far in the books, so who's to say what will happen next. it's pretty clear that the series will diverge from the books, and has already started sowing the seeds pretty early on. i approve of this, as it keeps things interesting (and gave me some interesting surprises when i read the first book after watching the series, as well as some interesting questions as i read the following ones. this is gonna be good.

If you're talking about Rakharo's death it's because the actor who played him went to act in some movie or something. He's an unimportant enough character that he's pretty much interchangeable with some other Dothraki bloodrider. The fact that they took the time and wasted valuable minutes while omitting other stuff is what bothers me.

    Update time?

Best episode yet, as far as I'm concerned. Yet I'm becoming increasingly aware of being a horrible nitpicker now that I've read the books. Reading them after the show would be the order I'd recommend.
The resolution of the Craster dilemma wasn't convincing, as expected. Margaery got more fleshed out compared to the books,

    Spoiler

that feels a bit strange to a reader. Not sure if I like that yet.

The Craster thing seems somewhat poorly handled. I don't think there's anything in the books about Mormont knowing what Craster did with his sons. In season 1, he was sceptical to the news about the White Walkers being seen again, so how could he "know" that Craster gives his boys to them? I think Margeary was ok, although she's supposed to be quite a bit younger. That seems to be a trend in the series, though - Robb doesn't look anywhere close to 17 either. Great episode nevertheless, although I missed Melisandre and Stannis. Frankly, before the show aired, I didn't really like the actor playing Stannis, but had big expectations for Liam Cunningham as Davos. Now it's quite the opposite, I'm liking Stephen Dillane's portrayal of Stannis more and more, while I'm somewhat underwhelmed by Cunningham's play. Carice van Houten is awesome as expected, though. Also, Yoren was a serious badass.

I enjoyed it, differences to the book be damned. All Mormont knows is that Craster disposes of his sons somehow, and what of that? As he says, life is far crueller north of the Wall, and they need Craster- Jon Snow mentions seeing something but he had just been knocked out with a club, so that explains a lack of concern about the White Walkers there. Thoroughly enjoyed Tyrion's little deception, Pycelle has always been thoroughly annoying so it was very entertaining watching him getting a bit of comeuppance. Quite a Tyrion-heavy episode actually, done at the expense of Dany and Stannis. Not to worry, I've seen the HBO preview for next week's episode and they're back with a vengeance...

Edit: damn right Akranadas. "I 'ate crossbows- take too long to reload!" Yoren is was awesome.

I like how they've condensed Arya's plot, some of that did seem a bit unnecessary in the book.

    Craster resolution was pretty crappy.

Jon: "Hey I saw a white walker."

Mormont: "Oh you mean that mysterious force which hasn't been seen in thousands of years, which is a possible explanation for all the crazy shit that happened like PEOPLE COMING BACK TO LIFE, the whole reason we can out here in the first place? And you say you saw it and could potentially show us the spot? And Craster apparently is communicating with them and could obviously answer all sorts of REALLY IMPORTANT questions?"

    Jon: "Yeah"

Mormont: "Meh, let's keep wandering the woods for a while. Oh and don't get your ass beat by a wildling, stupid."

    ...

The actress they got for Brienne is pretty good for the part. They're certainly making more of a point about Renly being gay in the series then they did in the books... I guess that's to help fill the HBO sex panoply quotient. Although it is kind of funny that while they have no qualms about showing naked females having crazy sex, Renly and Loras never seem to get past second base. I guess they don't want to scare American audiences too much.

Tyrion steals the show once again, of course.

Anyone else's "INCEST!!!" alarms go off when Margaery was all, "No it's cool Loras can join in"? Must confess I enjoyed her outfit.

Theon, poor Theon... I was wondering after last week how long it would take him to explode and scream, "None of this is my fault!" Because he's right, Balon and Asha are being dicks to him for something he had no choice about. The guy was effectively fostered as a kid and finally comes home, expecting and hoping to be at the very least welcomed (he's so damn cocksure about there being a massive Ironborn party it becomes a little hard to root for him but still), and then Balon just shits all over him for things he's been brought up to understand are ok. Man, the Greyjoys could do with some parenting books- I'm pretty sure that the received wisdom for "greeting returning son" is not "tell him he looks like a girl, and a useless one at that."

Add Robb Stark and Joffrey to the guys we couldn't get a glimpse of this week. I miss Robb! Next week: Joffrey gets a crossbow.

You both speaking about that warrior woman who fought the queens brother? Short haired blonde chick, I think shes hot. I grow tired of seeing typical women.

Question about the knights of summer, as lady stark said winter is coming, will these summer knights lose power or something mystical? or is it simply they have never experienced winter before?

No, they won't loose magically loose power though they might physically loose power due to starvation. It's just that when winter comes the war (theoretically) will become secondary as every one tries to survive especially up North as they will have to survive on food stores rather than harvests and waging war will consume resources that will become scarce. Plus some have never experienced winter.

Summer and winter are used in the book as metaphors for all sorts of things. It's not necessarily the season, although that plays into it too. Summer is the easy time, winter is the hard time. The knights of summer are the ones who have never fought in a real war, who still think it's just like a tourney with glory and girls and whatnot. Catelyn says as much to Loras (great line btw) when she says her son is fighting a war, not playing at one.

It's hard to tell here, but in the books Renly is surrounded by all the young lords and knights who all think the war is a great game since they've never actually fought a battle.

Never really thought of it that way, even when reading the books. Your interpretation is much better imo.
